Faces of disgust surround me in every direction, inching closer to me until I could feel myself pressing against the wall. Their eyes, cold and merciless, pierce through my skin, sending shivers down my spine. The strong scent of impending rain hangs in midair as the clouds loom in the sky with every shade of storm grey. Sealing my eyes shut, I breathe in deeply diverting the stares to face my rich, black complexion. A colour so gloomy should be invisible among the fair, but instead it shines so vividly. I begin fidgeting with the hem of my hoodie before jerking it over hoping that it would envelope me in its soft fabric. A low hum of chatter arises from afar along with the rapid thrashing of rain on the pavement.
I faintly overhear a voice so delicate questioning of my skin tone. I splutter, baffled at the curiosity as no one has ever had an interest in its abnormality but immediately know of it as a disgust and risk. The shrill of noise constantly attacks me as I reluctantly come to my senses. The colour of flourescent white floods my vision, only then to realize the colour bounds me. Someone shuffles next to me who coughs weakly vibrating the bed. Puzzled, my neck twists around to catch myself gawping at the same golden eyes. Occasional snorts and grunts escape from the loftier man who hovers over shielding her from me as if I was about to pounce onto her. I try to question her presence just as her gaze alters to the man followed by the flowing brown colour of her hair. The question queried earlier seemed to bother her as she asks it again but from me.
“How come your skin be black and mine be so pale?”
