For living in the “land of opportunities” the social brackett kids grow up in has a major effect on every aspect of their lives. The issues of inequality has a tremendous impact on a person’s overall health and social status once a child has reached adulthood. As children grow up in America, whether it be in a poor or wealthy social status, it is not reasonable to define America as a completely meritocratic society.

Growing up poor in America does not afford children anywhere near the same social opportunities as the rich. It costs money to be poor. If a person does not have enough money to pay their bills the bank charges an overage fee. Not being able to afford to use a bank or credit due to overages means that person will not be able to get decent housing even if they could afford it. Taking things like public transportation in rural areas is just not an option in most places and takes time out of a person’s day that could be used to make money at their job. Many families, especially families with single parents, are struggling to maintain just the basic necessities. Forcing the parents to make tough decisions such as trying to find basic housing and how to put food on the table. Food choices that are inexpensive tend to all be convenient type options that are unhealthy and hard on families health. Unstable housing leaves no place for a child to truly call home and makes going to school even more trying by constantly uprooting kids to change schools and make new friends. All these factors put family life in an increasingly stressful situation.
