Groupthink is everywhere. It’s in school, companies, fashion and religions places. The benefit from groupthinks in these places to share ideas and to know what everyone thinks about. People who like to sit in group for example, in school or in meeting to solve a problem or to share ideas about some homework or brainstorming, Groupthink will be the best idea for that. Not only in school or company business, but also in fashion and artistic, now many of them like…
Group decision making can be very helpful in getting different thoughts and opinions out of discussion, but also can be dangerous because of groupthink. Groupthink occurs when people avoid individually testing, analyzing, and evaluating facts in order to avoid upsetting the consensus of a group. In effect a conflict occurs whereby some topics are okay to discuss while others are closed often without the group being consciously aware of it. Those who violate the unspoken rules often find themselves being ostracized, alienated and ultimately expelled from the group.…
Groupthink is a form of a phenomenon characterized by members of a group choosing to evaluate consensus and conformity and preservation of the group above other values. In the example of Pennsylvania State University football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky abused children. While Sandusky colleague’s choses to protect him rather than doom Penn State image and program. The decision was based primarily on how group members will react rather than what was at the ethical or professional. Primary groups are very important because they leave a long lasting influence on how we develop our social selves. Charles Horton Cooley said that we belong to primary groups because this groups offers use fulfillment of personal needs of belonging.…
Fundraising for a nonprofit organization in a weak economy is very uncertain; not many individuals or businesses have the financial means to lend money. Thus, it is imperative to use all approaches to fundraising. Fundraising for a nonprofit organization typically involves applying for loans, grants, and using other forms of government and public assistance. When implementing non-traditional approaches to fundraising, it is important to use every possible means of government assistance, community support, and family contribution methods because there are limited the country’s economic status.…
According to study.com website (2015), a groupthink can simply be defined as an occurrence that gives a group of people a fault verdict or a conclusion a that a group has made that is an ineffective decision whereby it was reached just to appease the spirit of harmony among group members than allowing individuals to act independently and creatively. As alluded on, groupthink blocks individual creativity by ignoring alternatives allowing irrational actions to tale precedence. It happens most when individuals have similar background and the group is refusing external opinions. The result are that the decisions are flawed and they often come at a cost.…
The term group think is a negative form of group decision-making event. It influences members in a group to base decision-making on bringing harmony to the group rather than making realistic decisions to bring forth issues to the table. As members of a group, we…
Groupthink in the educational setting is a real serious issue. Academia has long been accused of it. The article “Liberal Groupthink Is Anti-Intellectual” by Mark Bauerlein is an excellent piece in describing the existence of groupthink in the educational arena and communicating its effects to the reader. I selected this article as it directly impacts me as a student but more importantly the article brought up something relevant in life, that groupthink narrows our minds. The whole concept of higher education is to broaden our minds and to teach us to think critically. This article did a nice job describing how groupthink has taken root in our colleges and universities and…
I have always had a different idea of what groupthink really means, to me I thought of it as a bad idea from someone amongst a group of people that had not been voiced seemingly because the person having this thought lacks confidence or backing. More like trying to proof to your business partners that an idea of using an outdated tactic to target a young crowd is not the best idea In its own definition Wikipedia(2013) describes groupthink as a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people, in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an incorrect or deviant decision- making outcome, whereas it can also be viewed as the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group…
Groupthink is when the majority of people in a group have the same idea and someone one with a different opinion feels like they must be wrong rather than the whole group. They then follow the group unquestioningly. (Sociology and Social Psych Concepts) In Germany at this time, there was a large quantity of people who agreed with what Hitler said, which made the people who didn’t feel outcast. They would then join the group because they “must be wrong” if they are the only one. Although some people felt like they should help the Jews, the thought of being different from the majority scared them ,so they remained silent.…
The idea of groupthink does not have a positive meaning because decision making is hard to do as a group; it is damaged group burdens that lead to a worsening of “rational effectiveness, truth analysis, and ethical decision”. Groupthink happens when groups are extremely organized and when they are under significant stress to make a valuable choice (Janis, 1972). A group is particularly weak to groupthink when its participants are alike in training, when the group is separated from outer ideas, and when there are no strong procedures for making choices. Groupthink refers to an emotional occurrence in which people struggle for agreement in a group. In order for groupthink to occur the group needs to be extremely consistent, protected from other…

As people, when confronted with a problem where a solution must be found, our ideal situation is to come up with the best possible one. To do this, we ideally gather the most knowledgeable, intelligent individuals into a group and attempt to derive the best solution to the problem. With the collection of these people, one would think that finding the best possible answer to the problem would be a rather simple task. However, what has happened in many situations is the complete opposite. Rather than finding the best possible solutions, many ideal, cohesive groups arrive at the worst possible answer largely due to problems in communication within the group. This is what we call the radical theory of ‘groupthink’. When groupthink occurs, it can lead to poor decision-making and lack of creativity and as a result, lead to severe consequences. It is important that groups be aware of the symptoms of groupthink in order reduce the chances of negative outcomes.…
In small-group communication, there are a few unique ethical considerations that arise. One major issue in small groups is groupthink. Groupthink is the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group in a way that discourages creativity or individual responsibility. Another unique ethical consideration is issues that involve symbolic convergence within in-groups and out-groups. Symbolic…
In this interview/process recording for the 3rd grade girls that were present in group, FY was absent, the girls for this day showed a different type of participation then from their previous counseling session. It was an improvement in seeing the girls engaging, and participating. At the start of the session, I was rushing against time to get the session going, and ending on a god note. Personally, I felt as though I was having a hard time in getting the session running smoothly, but I did what I can to get the girls to participate in their writing activity, and fun activity towards the end of their group session. The girls did very well in their group session. I am seeing an improvement in FE, by her communicating more in group. She is participating…
