Group Cohesion Paper
Group cohesion is an important aspect to consider when forming and conducting group therapy sessions. Group cohesion entitles the participation of group member’s interaction when working together, increasing change, accepting others, and other aspects that relates to a group as a whole. Harun & Mahmood (2012) states that “group cohesiveness … play an important role in the group dynamics” (p. 15). Group cohesion of its members it is based on the engagement and interactions that are displayed among its members. When promoting group cohesion for Healthy Life/Health Self group, I seek to encourage the members to express their concerns, ideas, and point-of-views in regards to what is discussed in group. As there are a number of stages involving a group, my main focus will be on the “performing” stage, by it being informative, conversational, and interactive. This Healthy Life/Health Self group would begin after introductions, recap, and goals focus is stated, as being an informative part of on its topic for the session on what the topic is about, issues involved, solutions, and other relevant information on the topic of discussion with information provided. Then, I want to hear the perspective of the members on what they learned, and how it relates to them. I aim to have each perspective heard, and for each member to provide each member their feedback and/or solution on assisting each other with their personal struggle. Based on the topic that is of focus for each session, there will be an interactive portion/time where the members would display their change outcome, along with the help of the members, if needed. This is where the group and its members will hit the “storming” stage that can affect their behavior and progress when in their group sessions. This can happen when member’s dominance plays a role, lack of engagement, lost of interest in group, and other conflicting issues that can disrupt the process of psycho-education, group support, and achievement of goals. If my group cohesion is threatened, I will redirect my group back to their goals, and the focus of what each session is about. The intervention modalities in the previous section would also be use for each member to become aware of their thoughts, behavior, and actions displayed in their group. As to what is display by the any of the members, I would assist them with coming up with solutions to change their cognitive and actions towards expressing it in a more positive and productive way for themselves and others. Forming is always the first stage, where the group members meet for the first time and roles as well as structure and purpose are not firmly established. This stage closes when the individuals label themselves as a group. Appropriately named, the storming stage is defined by intragroup conflict in the areas of limited autonomy and leadership, and is a critical in group development.     I chose to observe a sex offenders group at office of an association of licensed professional counselors in Hinesville, Georgia. The group consisted of 9 sex offenders and the counselor, who was a woman, and myself. The group meet in the evening and everyone was present and on time. We sat in a circle, and I was introduced. I had to sign a confidentiality agreement, and the guys signed something stating they didn’t mind my being there. There were no introductions, as everyone knew each other. Group therapy is seen as the most appropriate form of treatment in the United States.     A significant change to help the group develop is to approach the group from a earlier stage. The group’s cohesiveness and comfort level is not strong enough to move to the working stage. The author would achieve this by making new norms with the inclusion of the clients. With Peter’s departure, the remaining group is all newer members. It does not make sense to continue with norms that the clients did not create or agree to. By creating new norms the group could become more a unit, rather than individual clients at the whim of the group process.
