Explain in detail how the theories relating to communication in general and more specifically to non-verbal communication, impact the effectiveness of electronic communication (i.e. email, text, etc.) as a communication medium within organizations.

Communication has come great lengths over the last decade. Communication is crucial in everyday existence, be it communicating what needs to be done for dinner, to communicating with team members on a project. Communication occurs daily and is essential for the completion of the most minor tasks. Communication defined as: The process by which information is transmitted and understood between two or more people. (McShane &Steen pg.477). Effective communication is vital to all organizations, so much so that no company could exist without it. People work interdependently only when they can communicate with each other. Although organizations rely on a variety of coordinating mechanisms, frequent, timely, and accurate communication remains the primary means through which employees and work units effectively synchronize their work. (McShane & Steen pg. 246).
With the growth of communication from a simple conversation, to texting and emailing, and social media there are some things that remain constant. Non-verbal communication has always been present in everyday life. Non-verbal communication includes facial gestures, voice intonation, physical distance, and even silences. It is the process of using wordless messages to generate meaning. Non-verbal communication includes non-word vocalizations such as inflection and non-word sounds such as “ah” and “hmm.” Communication is complex. We cannot quantify the relative contribution of nonverbal communication to verbal communication (Lapakko,1997), but non-verbal communication often provides much more meaning than people realize.
