His trek into the Alaskan wilderness, which led to his eventual demise, left him remembered as heroic and reckless, a brilliant artist and an irresponsible egotist; but regardless of what one’s opinion is on Chris McCandless, there is no denying that he is interesting and has inspired a variety of works in the media, including author Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild, which was adapted into a film in 2007. Despite the conflicting public opinion, Chris McCandless succeeded in his goal to survive in the wilderness and taught the world valuable lessons in the process. Chris McCandless “probably died on August 18th, 112 days after he had walked into the wild.” (119, Krakauer) He survived with very little gear and food, even though he was essentially cut off from the world. To have lived for a little over three months totally self-sufficient is impressive. Chris’s goal was to be independent and live off the land for a while. In his mindset, he achieved in his goal. Wayne Westerberg had employed Chris for two short amounts of time, but said “He was the type of person who insisted on living out his beliefs.” (Krakauer, 67) This was why Chris was determined to go to Alaska, instead of listening to the protests of others.…

All around the world, there are people who oppose a lot of societies’ modern routines and values. Some drop everything they have to go off into nature, most of the time with little to no gear for proper survival. This is the story of Christopher McCandless. Chris—a young, newly college graduate, angry with the upper-middle class life he had grown up in—left everything he had in the summer of 1990. Journalist, Jon Krakauer, dives into the story of Christopher McCandless and the events that led him to his death. At first, Krakauer was simply writing an article on Chris, but after finding more and more out about the young man, he proceeded to writing an expository, non-fiction piece titled Into the Wild. Throughout the book, Krakauer explains the many characteristics of Chris, some of which were what cost him his life such as being a man of principles, fearlessness, self-reliance and over-confidence.…

Christopher McCandless was a young college graduate, who gave up everything to go live in the wild. I agree with the author that Christopher McCandless wasn't a crazy, a sociopath, or an outcast, because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for a long period of time.…

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer relates to the world the journey of the young and adventurous Chris McCandless. He persevered through months of the wilderness, but soon found himself trapped and starving. Chris eventually died there and was found shortly after, quickly generating publicity. Many people who knew him and even more who did not gave young McCandless their sympathy, although some argue he is undeserving of it.…
