What's really amazing about this course is that a lot of variety of topics and issues are discussed that happen around the world. The Mexican Drug Cartel is one of the few topics that haven't been discussed and that's what is being written about today. The Mexican Drug Cartel is basically a mini war that goes among rival drug cartels fighting each other for territory and control of traffic. Mexico has a geographically perfect location to stage and ship narcotics, illegal immigrants and contraband, and they've been doing it for a long time. It all started back in the 1920's when Mexico smuggled alcohol during prohibition. After the prohibition ended, drugs started to get smuggled all the way up until 1980 when it started going into a large scale. Today, Mexico grows cannabis and makes meth while Columbia makes cocaine. Mexico has the better geographic location so they do most of the shipping. The large scale drug movement all really started in the 1980's. A guy named Miguel “The Godfather” Gallardo, leader of the Guadalajara Cartel, controlled all illegal drug trade at the time in Mexico. He started off with drugs like marijuana and opium. A couple years later he got in contact with the biggest cartel in Columbia which was led by a man named Pablo Escobar. Gallardo then started shipping Pablo's product into the US. After a few years trafficking became too much due to many arrests and deaths of cartel leaders. Gallardo decided to split up his massive cartel into 8 smaller ones so it would be a harder time for the cops to bust all them all. However this took its toll too because individual cartel leader started taking the business personally and each one wanted to the biggest cartel, resulting to the on-going war we have today.…

Driven by high levels of demand, the Latin American drug trade continues to flourish despite efforts to dismantle it. While narcotrafficking was originally concentrated in the Andean region of Latin America, as counterdrug programs force traffickers to branch out and establish new channels, a sort of spillover effect has occurred in both production and trafficking activities. Source-country drug control programs have only resulted in minor reductions of overall cultivation and production but moreover caused shifts in the illicit industry leading to heavy permeation across both South and Central America and Mexico. America’s “War on Drugs” has ultimately led to the creation of smaller, vertically-integrated drug production and trafficking networks throughout Latin America. The following articles provide a broad analysis of these growing illicit networks involved with narcotrafficking. They cover important topics such as the permeation of the drug trade in countries like Mexico and Brazil, the role of intermediaries in narcotrafficking, the creation of micro-cartels, and the importance of narco/political nexus in the LATAM drug trade. Ultimately, the works suggest that counternarco efforts over the past couple of years in Latin America have only challenged the traffickers to seek new channels and form new networks at best and exacerbated the problem at worst.…

    Mexican Drug War

    • 1343 Words

The Mexican Drug War is based in Mexico, although the United States can be blamed for making a large contribution to it. Mexican organizations that deal in illegal activities started during the US prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s. It seems that when there is a demand for an item in the US and no supply, Mexico has always been there to supplement our “needs”. A Mexican Cartel is a criminal organization developed with the main purpose of promoting and controlling drug trafficking operations both interstate and intrastate. They range from loosely managed business agreements among various drug traffickers to formal commercial enterprises. The main Mexican Cartels consist of the Sinaloa, Gulf, La Familia, Tijuana, Beltran, and Juarez cartels. These cartels cover the majority of the territory in Mexico. There are two main cartels that control most of the market, the Sinaloa Cartel and the Gulf Cartel. The Sinaloa Cartel is led by a man nicknamed “El Chapo”. He was in jail in 2001 but escaped allegedly in a laundry basket. He is the most wanted man in the world with a bounty of eighty-seven million dollars. No one has drawn so much law enforcement attention since Al Capone. He and the Sinaloa Cartel are so successful that he has his own Forbes profile, he is estimated to be worth one billion dollars, making him the 1140th richest man in the world and the 55th most…
