Reflective Essay for Senior Service Learning Project For my project my classmate, Marie, and I worked together to beautify a part of the school. We chose to focus on the small nook near the English trailers and the art room. Here we found bushes being choked by vines and weeds, no budding flowers, dead branches, trash, and lots of nasty mulch. We knew we had a lot of work ahead of ourselves and not a lot of time (well, for me anyways!). Unfortunately I was unable to work to my full potential because I had to watch my siblings after school, leaving me little time to stay after and work on our garden. My mother had just started massage school and had to leave home before six, and Andrea was out of town most weeks from Tuesday to Friday. This left me having to deal with the children. This hindrance made it very difficult to assist my friend in our project and made me fret and worry I wouldn’t be able to get my hours in. Luckily, from time to time I was able to work for an hour before I headed home. Though it wasn’t much time spent on the garden, it was better than not working at all. After my mother finished school, I was able to buckle down and work more hours on the garden. I felt like I was finally doing something and making an impact on our project. When we started our project I had very little knowledge in gardening, which made me feel quite reserved and kind of useless in the beginning. I started out just picking weeds and moving plants from one side to the other. Progressively I learned how to trim the plants, how to remove roots more efficiently, dig better holes to put plants in, not to care about bugs as much and learned names of plants and flowers that I've never heard of before. This is all thanks to Marie. She assisted in extending my knowledge and helping guide me to improve my plant caring skills. At the start, I felt that taking care of the garden would be tedious, time

Our class has been exploring seeds, so I based my Storybird book (http://storybird.com/books/storybird-115/) around this. We covered topics in Maths, Science, Environment and Circle Time. These cross-curricular links were important for our class activity from sourcing the materials needed, to who would look after them and estimating their eventual height. The impact and effect flowers and bees had on our environment, and people’s feelings about this. I…

The society in this satire, Harrison Bergeron, is based on the principle of everybody being equal. Physically and mentally, so no one person is any better or worse at any activity. The author is mocking the aspects of actual societies with the whole plot of the story. People never want to be any worse at something than the people they’re with. Nobody wants to lose a competition, but by making everybody equal, that also means that nobody will win a competition.…

This story relates to situations in my life because I have an extremely busy schedule like the character Michael in the story. The combination of school work, team practices and family life makes it feel like I do not have enough time in every day to get everything done. I play for two ice hockey teams, Bishop Eustace and Team Comcast, which means practices four times a week and games four times a week. If the games are away it could sometimes mean a two hour trip each way plus the game time. When you add in school everyday from 8 until 2:30 and the required homework it feels like there is not enough time in the day. I can understand where a child could get worn out and…

Drenched in sweat and trying to avoid touching anything made of metal, I stood in the back of the dump truck shoveling mulch into a wheelbarrow. The temperature outside was in the upper nineties reaching for triple digits. I could see heat waves coming off of the scorched ground, but I didn’t have time to pay attention to any of that. We had a task to finish and we would see to it no matter what obstacles mother nature or life in general would throw our way. This is the mentality that working in landscaping every summer throughout high school taught me.…

Through my own experience as an avid outdoorsman, I find that Nature has many enjoyable activities to offer. Some of my friends like to go canoeing and some enjoy swimming in lakes, I find that my favorite outdoor sports are rock climbing, fly fishing and deer hunting. From the sweet smell of maple sap to all the little chirps, whistles and squeaks, I find myself completely relaxed when I am outside. It seems too often that the daily hustle and bustle of everyday work and school can leave a person stressed. Nature has a natural way of gently stimulating all of our senses and gives us something new to experience every day.…

In the last few days, I’ve noticed that the majority of students I cross on my way to class show absolutely no attention to the beautiful environment we have present on campus. Unfortunately, many of us only see the flaws in our campus such as missing chunks of gravel, spray painted dumpsters, overflowing trashcans, and cigarette butts variously spread about. While these things do cause an eye sore as students head to class, we must realize that we’re overlooking many aspects of our surroundings. On the short walk from Morrill Hall to the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, there are dozens of birds, squirrels, towering trees, and latching vines that truly show the complexity of nature.…

Although I always put all my effort in academia, I also spared my time for voluntary work and extra activities. When I was in Mattayom 5, I had opportunities to be a leader in guiding junior Mattayom students to cheering against other schools. I then have learned from this responsibility that unity and leadership are very significant characteristics a successful person ought to possess. I used to visit Almshouse to stay with the elderly because their families had little money to afford his grandparents or cousins. Every summer, I went to this place to make them…
