Green Mile Sparknotes
The Green Mile, March 1999 Stephen King, 1947-? Summary: John Coffey is brought to Cold Mountain accused of rape and murder. It becomes known that he has a healing touch. Paul Edgecombe, the superintendent, has sympathy for Coffey and later finds out that Coffey is indeed innocent, but can find no way to stop the execution. Coffey proclaimed that he “wanted to go” and thus allowed Paul to accept Coffey’s fate as he must, and go on with his life. Central Characters: Paul Edgecombe, probably over 100, narrator, was the head of E block (death row) at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Paul faces an internal struggle between what his job wants him to do and what he sometimes knows is the “right” thing. Kind and gentle, he recounts this episode of his life from Georgia Pines, his retirement home. John Coffey is a huge, muscular black man but is very slow in the mental sense, brought into a situation where death surrounds him, yet he has the power to heal by his own touch. Other Characters: Dean Stanton, Harry Terwilliger, Brutus Howell, and Percy Wetmore were all guards on E block. Percy was the most significant; he was a banty-rooster sort of guy. He liked to pick fights. He represented the fears of Paul Edgecombe. Though it is not obvious at the …show more content…
Jingles, Delacroix’s mouse, was symbolic of everything good on the Green Mile. He was symbolic of the only joy that E block held. The mouse brought compassion to all the guards except for Percy Wetmore, who tried to kill the “rodent”. The Green Mile symbolized our journey through life, and the electric chair symbolized its end. The “bugs” that came out of Coffey’s mouth following the healings were symbolic of the sickness leaving. He inhaled the sickness or ailment of each person (and the mouse) that he healed into himself. The bugs leaving his mouth signified that the sickness was cured, and that he had indeed

Leto’s approach to playing Rayon Real in Dallas Buyers Club was Inside/Out. He used Stanislavski’s system called ‘spiritual realism’ by completely emerging himself into the character he was playing. He never broke out of character while filming even his costars said that it felt like they were working with Rayon not Jared Leto. There are some elements that may make you think that Leto used an Outside/In approach because he actually lost a lot of weight, waxed his body and changing his dialect (physical and visual stimuli) but since he was trying to be as realistic as possible it makes it an Inside/Out approach. You could also see the psychological and mental changes that happened to the real Rayon Real (dealing with her sexuality, having AIDS,…

Throughout the book Paul Edgecomb leads up to the events of the execution of John Coffey, one of the inmates. Paul Edgecomb is the head of death row at the state prison. He has been there for 78 executions. John Coffey is a 7 foot man that was blamed for the rape and murder of two little girls in the south, which took place in the 1930s. Paul consistently feels that Coffey is innocent because he is a quiet man, who is afraid of the dark. He happens to be the calmest prisoner the guards have ever seen. Coffey has the ability to heal and see people's thoughts or memories. At one point Coffey even heals Paul’s urinary infection. The Green Mile is called “The Green Mile” because the green linoleum tiles the prisoners walk on to get to the electric chair. I think the book points out racial issues in the society that affected Coffey’s life at the time. William Wharton is the one behind the crime for which John is convicted for. Wharton works on the farm where the two girls killed lived. He was the one that kidnapped them. He also killed 3 people during a holdup and then he killed a police officer while escaping. He attempted to kill a guard when he got to Cold Mountain but Paul stopped…

Director Frank Darabont wrote and directed the film “The Shawshank Redemption” which was based on a novella by Stephen King. “The Shawshank Redemption” touches our hearts and creates warmth in our feelings as it makes us a member of the family as Frank Darabont tells the slow and gentle tale of loving friendship and hope. A Shawshank newcomer (White guy who worked in a bank) in 1946 Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), bangs up a 20-year friendship with a black guy named Red (Morgan Freeman) while in prison. It uses the sweet, soothing and soft voice overs of Red to include us in the story of men forming a community in prison. It isn’t one of those films where it offers us quick, in cloud nine feelings. It accomplishes in avoiding the familiar.…

In the book In Cold Blood, Truman Capote tells the tragic story of the Clutter murderers and the victims of the murder in Holcomb, Kansas. After hearing about the murder, Capote felt like this story was perfect to start his new project on. He went to Kansas to interview, meet, and do everything he could to get as much information on this event as possible. The different style choices, perspectives, evidence and descriptions Capote chooses to utilize in telling this story are used to not only help the reader visualize what went on, but to also manipulate the story to tell only what he wants the reader to know as he focuses on explaining his beliefs. Through his work, Capote emphasizes how easily perspectives can be altered or biased when it comes to the…

Citizen Kane was a film released in 1941 and it it was voted #1 in history of American film. It was written by, directed by and acted by Orson Welles. The story was set in Xanada in Florida and started with an introduction about that place. Citizen Kane has a strange opening as it opened with the camera panning a spooky haunted mansion and then the camera lingered and zoomed in closely to the sign saying ¡§No Trepassing, ¡¨ then the camera took us to the room in the house, we saw a person was lying on the bed and that was the main character of the story ¡§Charles Foster Kane.¡¨ (Orson Welles) We could see that he was dying and his last word was ¡§Rosebud¡¨, and then he dropped the ball, and it shattered. Because of the word ¡§Rosebud¡¨, people…

Darabont and Mccarthy both pick the settings of the texts to show the protagonist’s to survive. Both protagonists are struggling to survive in a hostile environment. Both are in constant fear for their lives due to their extreme environments. The setting for the road is in a post-apocalyptic world. No locations are used except the road that leads from the forest and once they have entered to the road Mccarthy uses techniques of withholding information to create mystery. In Shawshank Redemption, the setting is shown very visually with it first being shown with the use of camera angles particularly a birdseye view showing the whole prison. Both texts show both protagonists have had to adapt to being in these situations, neither of them were born into this environment but have had to constantly adapt to their environment. Cormac shows this by the introduction of the fathers old house. While Darabont shows Andy doing this as he is constantly making himself…

The walls of Shawshank are both confining and comforting for the men they imprison. The Shawshank Redemption takes a dual approach to ideas of freedom, exploring both the need for a sense of freedom and the desire to remain in the security of the institution. Andy’s twenty-year struggle to escape represents the profound human need to be free. The enjoyment of the prisoners as they share beers while tarring a factory roof and the mental release they feel as Andy plays forbidden music across the hijacked public address system demonstrate the idea that a sense of freedom is essential when physical escape is impossible. However, for prisoners who come to depend on the structure of their confinement, freedom is an intimidating challenge. Both Red and Brooks become institutionalised and struggle to survive in the world outside the prison’s walls. While Red chooses to make the most of his freedom, the experience is too much for Brooks and his release causes him to kill himself. While the film…

Fading in on an ominous nighttime exterior, the camera slowly focuses on a high wrought-iron fence with the initial "K." carved into the metal. Beyond spreads Xanadu, the vast estate of one of the world's wealthiest men.Within this estate is a dying man who clutches a snow globe with its make-believe snow swirling about. He utters one word, "Rosebud," and dies, dropping the ball, which breaks into tiny shards. So begins Orson Welles's “Citizen Kane”. “Citizen Kane” chronicles the life of Charles Foster Kane, one of the wealthiest men alive.…

    1984 Summary

Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely (Lord Acton). Most of the ruler desired to rule for centuries or at least as long as they live. Absolute power inherits greed for more power. Moreover leaders try all they can to keep themselves in power and try to suppress their opposition in such way that they don’t harm them in future. George Orwell in 1984 has illustrated similar situations and character of power system. Emmanuel Goldstein is such character who is a well-known inner party member of the dominating Party but he tries to betray the powerful party for the welfare of people but annihilated by the party. The party then making its subjects believes that Goldstein is a traitor and completely abolishing the existing data of his efforts of freeing the people from fascism is a perfect example of the given context. George Orwell is trying to prove from this scenario that the party has full control over its subject and by manipulating them it has authority to abolish anything in the past if tries to against the party line. As they have total power over people they wanted to eradicate everything from people’s mind that happened in the past so that in future the party will have sole control over the society. In my opinion, since this book was written in 1949, the time of many dictators like Hitler and Mussolini writer George Orwell was trying to predict the future of our world with a vision of dictatorship. The statements simply defines that if the system controls the past then it directly controls the future as well with its powerful tool of controlling people’s mind.…

William Faulkner said that "The best literature is about the old universal truths, such as love, honor, pride, compassion, and sacrifice." This means that long standing truths contain ideas that appeal to people and also create a sense of feeling for the particular characters in the novel. I agree with Faulkner's statement because many books that I have read have contained the elements he named. This statement is true of the book I read, The Green Mile by Stephen King, because this novel has much to say about compassion and sacrifice.

The universal truth of compassion is very much a part of this book. One part especially shows this truth. Percy, a prison guard, crushes a death row prisoner's pet mouse, which the prisoner loved more than…
