Green Computing Research Project
We Are Big Incorporated are looking at possible applications of green computing as part of their strategic goal of reducing costs while also helping the environment. While green computing terms and methods are increasingly becoming well-known, an adequate definition of green computing should be reached and for the purposes of this project can be defined thus: Sustainability in computing/IT systems

Responsible disposal of electronic waste
Recycling programs
Adoption of teleworking
Server virtualization

Each of these profiles directly relate to using computing resources with a sense of environmental responsibility and covers the entire process involved with the use of computing equipment from the design of systems, manufacture, use and disposal of the computer systems and all peripheral items as well. With this specific requirement we can then analyze each of the following areas as to how green computing technologies can be implemented and utilized. Energy Efficiency

Energy utilization is one of the main environmental impacts caused by computing technologies. According to Goldmansachs (2014), in their North American energy summit renewable energy is cleaner and more sustainable. If we were to consider the data center configurations which are present in so many organizations then there is a large amount of energy required in cooling systems as well as the servers and computer hardware themselves. Efficiency methods can then include such simple steps as reducing the number of servers required to serve clients. This can be accomplished either through virtualization or allocation of multiple roles, as well as using off-site data centers and cloud based technologies. Further efficiencies are available with the latest computer hardware able to run in low power modes when not being used with a zero watt output rating. Disposal

Given the increase of computer equipment especially in recent years, one of the issues as a result nature has been the need to dispose of old and broken equipment. In the past, legislation has been introduced to ensure that such equipment is disposed of in a responsible manner with the minimum of environmental disruption, but there are also multiple options to recycle equipment. Old computers for example can be refurbished or be re-used in developing countries. Teleworking

Although this has recently undergone some negative publicity with companies like Yahoo! shunning the availability of allowing workers to connect from home there are significant benefits to implementing this. Not only can it be an excellent method to promote workplace flexibility and increase employee morale but it also reduces the environmental impact of workers travelling to their place of work in congested traffic areas. Virtualization

While this has been touched on with regards to energy efficiency, there is a sizeable benefit to creating virtual instances of servers on one physical host. Allocation of shared resources and the ability to change this on the fly gives a technological improvement but the reduction of environmental impact through power consumption of moving from five physical systems to one system is considerable, and should servers be switched to cloud based applications then the savings in terms of carbon emissions are considerable. Software

According to Schwalbe (2014), software can be divided into categories based on their functionality and price. Traditionally organizations have relied on commercial software ventures to provide their client and server operating capabilities with Open Source software providing only a small percentage of market share. Recently the profile of open source software has been raised and the proliferation of high quality open source alternatives to products such as the Microsoft Office Suite for example.
