Greek Values In The Iliad
ANCIENT GREEK VALUES “Black ships before Troy” the adapted version of the Iliad, reflects important cultural and

social values of Ancient Greece. It is a tale that demonstrates the importance of mythology and

religion. This story of vengeance highlights Greek views on courage, honor, and loyalty while

giving an inside view on Greek customs around gender, death and burial rights. Throughout the

book, the author uses foreshadowing, imagery, and the behaviors of characters and gods to

demonstrate these values. As a result, we can determine that the death and burial right, quest

for vengeance, and courage all connect to honor and were very important as Greek values.

But

how did honor affect the courage of the Greeks.

Greeks think of courage as a very important value since honor affects it in many ways

like how you gain courage to do the honorable thing. This is represented throughout the book

this includes the moment when Patroclus feels like he needs to go out to the battle mass to fight

as Achilles to strike fear in the Trojans. This shows that he is trying to do the honorable thing

which shows courage because it is dangerous to go out into battle, when it is very likely that he

won’t come back. Another act of courage is that Achilles is finally going out to battle in grief

And this shows that he didn’t want his friend to die in vane which is

honorable and courageous. Finally, a quote stated, “then as it had gone, so Hector’s courage

returned to him… he turned to face his enemy(82).” This quote shows courage as though

Hector was scared to face Achilles yet he went back to face him in battle! So in the end the

Greeks showed that the value of courage is a very important value in Greek culture.

Now the last value that is important in Greek culture is the quest for seeking vengeance!

A quote that shows this is stated by Achilles, “but I will not turn from the fight while Hector

lives…(80)” this shows Achilles does not care what it will take but wants Hector to be dead since

he killed Patroclus. Which is honorable since he seeks vengeance for a dead friend. Another

way a character/god showed the quest for vengeance was when Apollo gets revenge on the

Greeks since they didn’t give a priest, his daughter back, Apollo get’s revenge by shooting

arrows of pestilence at the Greek camp. This is also honorable because Apollo cares for his

priests and want them to be happy. Finally Oenone gets revenge on Paris for not staying

The Iliad, a book by Homer about the Trojan War, focuses a lot on Achilles and his internal struggle with his personal desires. In the time of the Trojan War, there was an unspoken code of morals and how warriors of honor should follow. If they did not fight or acted cowardly it not only brought them shame but their family name was looked down on. Warriors that were defeated weren't always killed because they were sometimes taken prisoner to be used for ransom money or gifts. However, in the Iliad, Homer shows that sympathy rarely is evident in war.…

However, each one displayed their pride in different ways. Achilles did so to a fault when he first refused to fight for Agamemnon. Achilles’ pride got in the way over the fact that Breisis was taken away from him by Agamemnon. Achilles knew the state would be better served if he joined the war, but pride initially kept him out of it. He then overcomes that pride to help lead his state into victory. Hector shows his pride in his country immediately even though he also has great pride in his family. Hector is aware of his duty to his country and does not let his pride get in the way of compromising his service. Instead, he fights as a representative of Troy and it is pride that permits him to make that choice. Hector explains this by saying “All this weighs on my mind too, dear woman. But I would die of shame to face the men of Troy and the Trojan women trailing their long robes if I would shrink from battle now, a coward” (6.…

Honor and glory are central to the Greek character. Since heroes are the essence of the society from which they come, Greek heroes live their lives according to honor and glory, in all their varied forms. Honor and glory trigger an epic war that takes the lives of numerous men, and shape its development at every stage. The fall of Troy is "a thing… whose glory shall perish never (Homer, Iliad 2.324)". The goal of the Greeks is the fame that resounds even after death, and they let nothing bar their way. The honor of the individual, family, and community guide every action and response. Honor and glory define the hero, and therefore are the foundations for everything that comes to pass in Homer's Iliad.…

Being that I am a recovering addict, I have been looking at my actions more in depth and have come to the realization that all of my actions had a motive to them I believe. I was acting on egoism rather than altruism. Altruism is defined as the unselfish concern of the welfare of others while egoism is defined as the belief that self-interest is the motive for all human conduct. Upon doing my fourth step inventory, I was able to see how my actions were used to manipulate people into having them do what I wanted, which would be a form of egoism. Although I may have thought I was acting altruistically, analysis proved that I was not doing a good deed expecting nothing in return. The same can be seen in The Iliad, particularly in the characters Achilles and Hector. The struggle between altruism and egoism in both characters is notable throughout the epic poem and shows that neither character is inherently good or inherently selfish.…
