Greed: Major Dog Fighting
There are many reasons people are drawn to dog fighting. The most common reason is greed. Major dog fight attacks have sometimes resulted in captures of more than $500,000. For others, the attraction lies in using the animals as an extension of themselves to fight their battles for them and to demonstrate their strength and skill. This can cause the owner of the dog to lose not only money, but status and may lead to brutal actions against the dog when a dog loses.

[They] try to inflict the maximum amount of damage on an opponent.” This leads to attacks that could be avoided altogether. Maybe pit bulls are too aggressive.…

In about a quarter of fatal dog-bite cases, the dog owners were previously involved in illegal fighting. The dogs that bite people are, in many cases, socially isolated because their owners are socially isolated, and they are vicious because they have owners who want a vicious dog. The junk-yard German shepherd -- which looks as if it would rip your throat out -- and the German shepherd guide dog are the same breed. But they are not the same dog, because they have owners with different intentions. (qtd. in Argument in support of breed bans).…

In some cases narcotic drugs are even fed to them to make them more aggressive. Dogs have their tails cut short and ears cropped to have less chance of another dog grabbing at it during a fight. The worse part is the dogs have their tail and ears cut by their cruel unprofessional owner. During a fight, dogs are contained in a 14 by 20 square-foot pit. Any dog of any breed can be aggressive, it just depends on how the owner trains the dog to act in a certain situation. Pit bulls are great at listening and can learn new commands very quickly. If the dog is trained to act a certain way during a situation, they will do as they are taught. The dog’s environment around them can also determine the canines behavior and the way that they act in a certain situation. If a dog has been raised in a bad environment, people cannot expect the dog to interact with others appropriately. Dogs are not like humans and cannot tell the difference between right and…

Other pit bulls were specifically bred for work and companionship. These dogs have long been popular family pets, noted for their gentleness, affection and loyalty and even those pit bulls bred to fight other animals were not prone to aggressiveness toward people. Dogs used for fighting needed to be routinely handled by people; therefore aggression toward people was not tolerated. Any dog that behaved aggressively toward a person was killed, to avoid passing on such an undesirable trait. Research on pet dogs confirms that dog aggressive dogs are no more likely to direct aggression toward people than dogs that aren’t aggressive to other dogs. All of these negative traits can also be easily avoided…

Pit bulls have been portrayed as ferocious, dangerous and mean. Most people believe it is the dog’s natural personality and that they are born that way, but this is not true. Finding the right home and controlling the breeding of all dogs is important for this reason. Scott says in “Man’s Best friend”, “A few irresponsible owners give pit bulls a bad name by raising them to fight.
