Great Gatsby Scholarship Essay

The Governor’s Honors Program would be an amazing experience for me, not only now— in high school and as I apply to college— but in the future, vocationally. I am elated to be nominated in a subject I have loved from very young. From reading Junie B. Jones in the first grade to deciphering Fitzgerald’s analogies in The Great Gatsby last year, I have enjoyed diving into the world of literature, whether to escape reality or to inform others about topics. I have even recently decided that I want to pursue a degree in Secondary Education to become a high school English teacher. All in all, GHP is the place for me. Many people, when tasked with an essay, will groan and procrastinate. However, in my case, I rather have that assignment over anything else. I love to explain things, why I know them to be true, and how they work. Additionally, I enjoy journaling about my day to day experiences, fleshing out how I could better myself and handle problems differently. I see writing as a creative outlet — not a task to be checked off. Although I loved a good book when I was little, my recent love for literature springs from my experiences this past school year in AP Language and Composition. I took this class a year early in order to participate in AP Capstone. I enjoyed getting to explore and discover the true meaning behind the words they wrote. If given the chance to attend GHP, I would be a motivating, helpful, and attentive classmate and student. I am always trying to better myself and aid others in that process as well. GHP would be a great opportunity to meet those with the same drive and love for English that I have. I truly believe that the connections I make there, both educationally and personally, will make a difference in my future. My uncle attended GHP for science when he was a student and he has fond memories and remembers those who influenced him to this day, in his field of Medical Sales.
