Summary of Chapters-Great Gatsby

Chapter 1

* We are introduced to narrator Nick Carraway who firstly talks about the places within America that are so divided and different. He talks of New York, the eggs and the valley of ashes. * He talks of how New York is full of commerce and possibilities and how it has gangsters and crime. * He decides to move to where the ‘bond business’ is and lives in west egg, where it is not as fashionable as east egg. * He is fascinated by Jay Gatsby, his neighbour, and a man he hears a lot of but does not see a lot, and who throws lavish parties all the time for everyone in the eggs. * He goes to visit his cousin daisy and her husband tom buchanan who live in east egg and are insanely rich. * He finds out what sort of a man tom is, who is a womaniser, racist, sexist and a bit of a sleaze. * He also meets Jordan baker, a pro tennis player, who he seems very fond of. * At the end, he witnesses Gatsby at his mansion window, who he hopes to meet.

Chapter 2

* Nick and tom visit valley of ashes to meet tom’s mistress. * The valley is a poorer place then the eggs and is quite dreary and Nick says it is a place of despair. * Repetition of grey emphasise its dull appearance * Mrs Wilson is a thickish woman who tom basically bought and who he only uses for sex * Mrs Wilson is quite an ignorant, shameless, provocative and sensual woman who constantly makes fun of her husband, and who is quite happy, yet oblivious to being used by tom buchanan. * We come to realise tom is violent in this chapter as he breaks myrtles nose and injures daisy’s finger. It’s as if it’s only what he wants, he gets. He’s very demanding and powerful. * He buys her a puppy to keep her satisfied * We meet myrtles sister, Catherine, who is more plain and innocent than myrtle but is quite jealous of her and we believe this is why myrtle brought her there, to show off. * Catherine, possibly lesbian due to references of her living arrangements and when she socialises. * Myrtle talks of how she married beneath, by marrying her husband. * Her childish behaviour leads tom to be violent * NYC is a place where most things are allowed-violence, different sexuality, blurred boundaries. It is immoral, divided and money and possessions mean everything.

Chapter 3

* Gatsby’s large party occurred * Nick got an invited, was happy to attend * He gets close with Jordan baker * He finds out stuff about Gatsby, such as how he possibly murdered a man * He can’t get over the size and luxury of the party, it really is extravagant * He was dying to meet Gatsby himself * We really notice the shallowness of the guests and the vane, drunken people that are there. * Him and Jordan meet old man in library, astonished that Gatsby has real books that he actually reads * He eventually meets Gatsby on purpose as they reminisce about their past, of war. * Gatsby invites him on a trip on his hydroplane. * Gatsby made him feel special, his smile was warming and it could be looked at all day * No one really wants to get to know Gatsby just care about big parties and getting drunk * He really finds Gatsby a mystery, wants to really know him * Nick grows very fond of Jordan and he wonders if its love

Due to the wealth gap between Tom and Wilson you may think they could not be more different but you would be wrong. Tom’s wealth is exemplified when Nick states,” Their house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay (6).” So Tom has lots of money and Daisy had never been unfaithful. Tom on the other hand has no respect for women and has ventured off several times and at the moment was seeing Myrtle. Wilson was poor as shown when Nick went to his gas station and, “The interior was unprosperous and bare; the only car visible was the dust covered wreck…

A reporter even travels to Gatsby’s mansion hoping to interview him. Nick interrupts the story to tell the truth about Gatsby, as it all really happened. Gatsby was born James Gatz on a North Dakota farm. He attended college at St. Olaf’s in Minnesota, but dropped out after two weeks. He worked as a janitor to pay for his tuition. He worked on Lake Superior the next summer fishing for salmon and digging for clams. One day, he saw a wealthy copper mogul name Dan Cody, on his yacht and went out to warn him of the storm ahead. Cody took Gatz, named him Jay Gatsby, and made him his personal assistant. Traveling with Cody to the Barbary Coast and the West Indies, Gatsby fell in love with wealth and luxury. Cody was a heavy drinker, and one of Gatsby’s jobs was to look after him on his drunken days. This made Gatsby not to ever drink because he’s aware of the dangers of drinking. When Cody died, he left Gatsby $25,000, but Cody’s mistress didn’t allow him to collect his inheritance. Gatsby used his experience as motivation to become a wealthy successful man. Nick doesn’t see Gatsby or Daisy for a while since the reunion at his house. One afternoon Nick visits Gatsby’s house and finds Tom there along with the Sloanes. Gatsby lets Tom know that he knows Daisy. Tom is aware of Daisy’s solo visits to Gatsby’s mansion. He is suspicious but doesn’t know about Gatsby and Daisy’s love. Tom and Daisy attend a…

For example, when Nick visits Tom's house the first time, Tom literally pushes Nick around. Tom demonstrates his egocentricity when he was showing off his possessions to Nick: "I've got a nice place here. It belonged to the Demaine man"(page 13). Tom's wealth gets to his head and makes him think he is superior to other people. He's racist and his goal in life is to keep the lower class from rising. Tom thinks that poor people are inferior to him and he is quite a snob. Sometimes he is nothing more than a bully and other times he can be downright cruel. When he talks to George Wilson, his mistress' husband, about selling his car to him - he is simply playing with the man, since he never actually intends to do so. Tom becomes angry when Wilson tries to talk to him about it: "Very well then, I won't sell you the car at all...I'm under no obligation to you at all...and as for your bothering me about it at lunch time, I won't stand that at all!" (page 111). Tom was being extremely cruel at that moment because Wilson needed the money that would come from the car, but Tom didn't care. There are times when Tom loses his temper when people don't obey him. For example, when Myrtle Wilson started shouting Daisy's name, Tom punched her in the face, and broke her nose. Morality is one of the values that Tom preaches, but doesn't practice. He condemns the affair between Daisy and Gatsby - while he goes and cheats on his own wife!! Tom is the…
