Great Gatsby
• Nicholas "Nick" Carraway (narrator) — a man from the Midwest, a Yale graduate, a World War I veteran, and a resident of West Egg. He is Gatsby's next-door neighbor and a bond salesman. Easygoing, sarcastic and optimistic, this latter quality fades as the novel progresses. • Jay Gatsby (originally James Gatz) — a young, mysterious millionaire with shady business connections (later revealed to be a bootlegger), originally from North Dakota. He is obsessed with Daisy Buchanan, whom he had met when he was a young officer stationed in the south during World War I. The character is based on the bootlegger and former World War I officer Max Gerlach, according to Some Sort of Epic Grandeur, Matthew J Bruccoli's biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Gatsby is said to have briefly studied at Trinity College, Oxford in England after the end of World War I. • Daisy Buchanan née Fay — an attractive and effervescent, if shallow and self-absorbed, young woman, identified as a flapper. She is Nick's second cousin, once removed; and the wife of Tom Buchanan. Daisy is believed to have been inspired by Fitzgerald's own youthful romances with Ginevra King. Daisy once had a romantic relationship with Gatsby, before she married Tom. Her choice between Gatsby and Tom is one of the central conflicts in the novel. • Tom Buchanan — a millionaire who lives on East Egg, and Daisy's husband. Buchanan has parallels with William Mitchell, the Chicagoan who married Ginevra King. Buchanan and Mitchell were both Chicagoans with an interest in polo. Like Ginevra's father, whom Fitzgerald resented, Buchanan attended Yale and is a white supremacist.[15] • Jordan Baker — Daisy Buchanan's long-time friend, Nick Carraway's girlfriend for most of the novel and a professional golfer with a slightly shady reputation and a penchant for untruthfulness. Fitzgerald told Maxwell Perkins that Jordan was based on the golfer Edith Cummings, a friend of Ginevra King. Her name is a play on the two

Many came to believe that Zelda the inspiration behind the character, Daisy Buchanan, in reality King was again the true influence of this character and her actions. Zelda had a significant influence on Fitzgerald’s life however, King was the main influence for his writings, “Zelda was the most important woman in his life. But Ginevra was extremely important to his writing. He based character after character on her through his career, and yet we’ve known almost nothing of her, (West).” Even some of the major details represented in the novel where apparent in Fitzgerald’s life and were created by King, again showing how King’s influence in Fitzgerald’s life displayed as a key factor in his writings. When just focusing on the details and events that occurred in Fitzgerald’s and King’s life and counter referencing them back to The Great Gatsby, the amount of overlapping of ideas and events in phenomenal. One of the details being how they meet, and how things ended between them. Just like Daisy did, King left him for another, richer, man. The four settings in the Great Gatsby can changes the image on the overall plot. Each one of them makes a different tone and enhances the image of the story line. East and West Egg are both wealthy places but, since they are located on opposite sides, their ideals are different. The Valley of Ashes is what everybody looks at as a burned out Hell. Manhattan would be best described as the purgatory on earth. These settings represent the distance between the classes in this time period, from the wealthy class of the East and West “eggs”, the desolate “valley of ashes”, to the chaos of “Manhattan.”…

Can chasing an ideal blind us and prevent us from seeing the truth? Sometimes ideals can become such a big driving force in our life that they cause us to overlook the truth and ignore reality. Reality and ideals are contrasted through the goals in life of the characters Nick, Gatsby, and Daisy. Through contrasting ideals and the reality of a situation, F.Scott Fitzgerald suggests that chasing an ideal without recognizing the truth will not allow an individual to attain their goal because reality is needed to see the possibility of one’s dream.…
