What is Graves’ disease? Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disease which causes the thyroid gland to be put into overdrive. Graves’ disease can have an effect on the body, causing problems with the eyes, skin, create goiters, and several other symptoms. Little is known about what exactly causes Graves’ disease, like many other autoimmune disorders. On the contrary, it is known who is susceptible to Graves’ disease. As for where Graves’ disease occurs there are two main areas that are being effected; these include both the thyroid and pituitary glands. Furthermore, there are a variety of treatment options to help cure and fix Graves’ disease including medication and surgery.

Well there are several symptoms that come with Graves’ disease. A few of these common symptoms include: anxiety, chest pain, insomnia, weight loss, and muscle weakness. However, if these symptoms are ignored more severe symptoms such as Goiters, skin and severe eye problems can occur. In Graves’ disease goiters are called diffuse thyrotoxic goiters. This is the enlargement of the throat caused by the swelling of the thyroid gland. Additionally, the specific eye problems in grave’s disease include ophthalmopathy and exophthalmos. Graves’ ophthalmopathy is when the eyes begin to bulge, which is caused by an inflammatory response. If this is ignored exophthalmos can occur, which is when the inflammation is increased and the eyes bulge out of their sockets. In addition, the rare skin problem caused by grave’s disease is pretibial myxedema. This causes the skin to develop red irregular patchy skin. Moreover, all these symptoms are caused by the effects of the autoimmune disorder causing your body to attack itself. This occurs by releasing an excess amount of antibodies called thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSIs) throughout the body. This then causes them to be pushed into the tissues causing the swelling and inflammation.
