Grasping a Hot Coal
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout's older brother Jem is known to be able to handle himself better than Scout and be a “gentleman” like his father. When Jem suddenly explodes in anger and destroys Mrs.Dubose’s camellias because of a comment she made earlier, it surprises the reader. Mrs.Dubose earlier in the day had insulted Atticus: “Your father’s no better than the niggers and trash he works for!”( p.135). Scout practically had to drag Jem away from her. Being away from Mrs.Dubose’s house did not solve the problem: “He did not begin to calm down until he had cut the tops off every camellia bush Mrs.Dubose owned” (p.137). Jem had to learn that for others to understand him, he had to first make an effort to understand them.

When Atticus hears of what Jem has done,he demands Jem go and apologize to Mrs.Dubose. She requests that as a result for his punitive actions, Jem should read to her:” She wants me to come every afternoon after school and Saturdays and read to her out loud for two hours. Atticus do I have to?” (p.140). Atticus informs Jem he must read to her although he despises the idea. When Jem, accompanied by Scout, goes to read to her, he learns that she has frequent fits. One day Atticus goes to Mrs.Dubose's and arrives back brandishing a candy box. He tells

Uncontrolled anger can have can also have an effect on personal health such as heart attacks, eczema, strokes, insomnia, and depression.”Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned” Jem was not able to control his anger and cut down Mrs.Dubose's camellias, but the effects of that was him having to read to her daily. Having to read to her brought Jem and Scout an understanding of her. It taught them that people may have opposing views, and while they may not agree they need to respect

During the progression of To Kill A Mockingbird Jem and Scout don’t only grow physically they also grow mentally. In this scene Scout is forced to take the higher ground and walk away from a fight with Cecil Jacobs. “I was far too old and too big for such childish things and the sooner I learned to hold it in the better off I would be”(94). This taught us that scout respects her father's word and even though scout will have to deal with the ridicule of backing down from the fight, but scout will know that she did the right thing. Lee is trying to teach that your morale’s only become more true and accurate as you get older. Eventually this will reveal your true idea’s and beliefs. This next quote exposes how prejudice isn’t always people's actions, it can also be…

Mrs. Dubose’s judgmental and bitter nature gives insight to Lee’s theme that the follies of one’s human nature can lead people to only see the worst in them. As Jem and Scout Finch simply walk past the house of Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, she starts persecuting them on their appearance, actions, and the “wrongs” of their father. She automatically expects the worst of them, speculating that they must be up to no good. Mrs. Dubose even insults their father saying, “Your father is no better than the niggers and trash he works for!”(Lee 102). The spiteful behavior of Mrs. Dubose only offends those who encounter her. Her thoughts are unfiltered; letting her harsh judgements be known whenever she pleases. Mrs. Dubose fails to see the damage her…

In regards to the attitude he has towards his sister, the book To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, first presents a typical older brother mindset, with Jem being the best of friends with Scout when they were younger, but when Jem and Scout begin to grow older, they begin to, as Scout says on page 56, “part company”. As a result of Atticus’ decisions, Scout and Jem were mocked by their peers. An example of this was during Scout’s fight with Cecil Jacobs. Scout shares her experience with her brother, Jem, saying, “He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch’s daddy defended niggers. I denied it, but told Jem.” (Lee 74). Not only the fact that Cecil Jacobs responded negatively to Atticus’ resolve, but also that the rest of the school’s…

Dubose has two sides to her just like Calpurnia. One of Mrs. Dubose sides is that she is an elderly woman that does not like colored people. Jem takes her abuse until she says something mean about Atticus, and that finally gets to him. Jem shows true courage when he touches the wall of Boo Radley’s house. Jem states that “I hope you’ve got it through your head that he’ll kill us each and every one [...] Don’t blame me when he gouges your eyes out.” (17). This quote demonstrates the fear Jem has of the Radley house and Boo Radley. His childhood has been filled with rumors of how evil Arthur (Boo) Radley is, like “he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained” (16), and that he has stabbed his father, Mr. Radley (13). Although these scare him, Jem wants to stand up for himself by not letting down a dare. He accepts Dill’s challenge and is able to face his fears by touching the house of the Radleys. Jem shows courage again when he goes to help Mrs. Dubose even though she has insulted their family and, to Jem, is a terrifying elderly woman. This is reflected where Jem states, “Atticus, it’s all right on the sidewalk but inside it’s - it’s all dark and creepy. There’s shadows and things on the ceiling…” (140). Jem is afraid of Mrs. Dubose as much as he is afraid of Boo. In spite of this, Jem enters her house when told by his father, Atticus Finch. He was able to sit right by her every evening for more than a month. Throughout the novel, Jem has had a fear of many characters like Boo and Mrs. Dubose. However, he was able to overcome those fears, although some were…

Dubose’s courage specifically impacted Jem, forever changing his personality and actions throughout the novel and beyond. Jem undoubtedly did not like Mrs. Dubose. Her words often set Jem aflame, leading him into some type of attack, such as destroying Mrs. Dubose’s flowers. This is simply remedied after Atticus explains to Jem that Mrs. Dubose was indeed a “lady.” Jem, not being able to mentally process what his father is saying, incinerated the small candy box that held the camellia, given to Jem from Mrs. Dubose(in her will) via Atticus. He destroyed the box, but he held onto the flower, with its pearl white petals shining in the warm light of the fire. This action illustrates Jem’s final understanding for Mrs. Dubose and her positive characteristics. This is when Jem’s life had changed. Later in the novel, Atticus waited at his doorstep, facing a mob of white men. This mob has come for Atticus and Tom Robinson. Taking this action will hopefully influence Tom’s court case, caused by his death. Among Atticus was his son, Jem, standing with his brave father. Atticus respectfully attempts to remove Jem from the situation, ordering, “Go home, son. Take Scout and Dill with you.” He begs him to go, but Jem “refused to budge” and “shook his head” (203). Jem’s sense of morality, acquired from Mrs. Dubose and her death, led him to defend his father and his ethics. Jem knows that courage is not “a man with a gun in his hand,” but it is something more valuable. Courage is…
