Graduation Speech: Wake Up In Old Hawaii
Let’s take a walk, close your eyes and simply listen to your surroundings. I want you to think about old Hawaii nei. I want you to wake up before the sun comes up. See the blessings all around you. Look up at the Mauna, as many of us look at the Mauna as guidance to find peace of mind in the morning to start a positive day. As we look up we think about the crisp cool air. We think about the mana (power) that the Mountain holds. We feel strength in ourselves from the spirit of the aina. That strength is our motivation to get through an ordinary day in modern society. Just like what you were thinking about the Kane waking up at the crisp of the morning and finding that strength finding that positivity. As he is still awaking and the sun is peaking above Haleakala, this kane may not be getting dressed in Levi’s and a neon Shirt getting in a big run down truck and heading to a This kane is going to chaotic construction site. Back in old Hawaii day this Kane might head to the Kai (Ocean) or to the …show more content…
It’s hard to show your family happiness while providing what they need. It is hard to keep a steady peace of mind. It is hard to keep that positivity fire ignited. It is hard enough that the things Grandma and Grandpa, Mom and Dad are teaching the keiki about what they know about the aspects of life. They teach us about how we are supposed to take on the world. How are we supposed to use these methods and different secrets to make life easier if life around us just keep changing. We cannot rely on the things that keep us going because they are being torn down and built over. These moments in time are all we know and the things we have in this life are the only way of remembering those moments for generations to come. Watching all of this fade away is sort of a shut down for all of us to reboot and see what we are supposed to do to stand up for

Yes, yes, yes Anita!!! This troubled world we live in idolizes materialist things and people more than worship God. You will see more people spending more time going to concerts than praying. Or even spending more money on their appearance than tithing. Luther’s reference to idolatry was truly on point. People are idolizing the “American dream” than the one who is the reason behind it all,…

I haven’t stopped running since May of 2013, and truth be told, I’m getting kind of tired of it. Not of the sweat, the fact that my legs are constantly sore, the nuisance of cycling all of my workout clothes through the wash every week, or even the fact that I still look like the skinniest guy in the gym. No, I’m getting tired of all the other baggage that’s come with it.…

Today we reached Independence Rock. As soon as we get there we pull out a blanket and have a picnic. We had bread and meat with whatever was left over from the morning meal. After we eat, we carved our names on the top of the rock where the sun points too. We carved it in the order of wagon trails, family, and their age. We carved our names in with a pocket knife. We sat next to the rock. The rock is super tall and was hard to climb it.…

Since family means nobody gets left behind, it’s important to create a hopeful future for your family by staying with them. For example, in the book Hiroshima by Hersey, Mrs. Nakamura, a widow, had a rough time during the bombing. She helped her children from being crushed in their home, took them to safety in Asano Park, and most importantly comforted them. Mrs. Nakamura took care of her children in their darkest days when they needed it the most. She created a hopeful future for her children by protecting them the best she could and that helps her children because they know that they aren’t alone and they can pass that along to others and maybe those who aren’t related at…

One thing people have always told me is that I remind them of the person Randall Cobb from the book game changers. He has one of the most creative and unique personalities. He is passionate for the game of basketball by working hard on his time. Randall is also talented in the subjects math and science by pushing himself to make good grades. He also thrives to help people even if it's with school work, personal problems, or on the basketball court. All in all he was almost exact the same person as I am he likes basketball, he helps others, and he does well in school.…

Remember when you were little and your mom would say, “Everything will be okay; it is not the end of the world,” and when she said those words everything would be okay? This is an example of how in families there is usually someone who holds the power, and that power held helps hold the family together with strength. When parents hold power, they can help their children grow, learn, and stay hopeful. When there isn’t someone in power, children can grow apart and become distant. I believe that parents play an important role in their child’s development. It is evident in day-to-day life that every family has someone in power; however, if they do not, these families can break.…

So, what happened on Jersey Shore last night? I’m sure most of you could tell me. So, what happened with the IMF and the Greek government last night? I’m sure most of you couldn’t tell me. The world we live in today has changed a lot. We live in such a safe, comfortable place, despite economic troubles and mounting debt. But we don’t have much to complain about. We don’t really need to worry about violation of our human rights or violent protests or government forces violence against citizens or such things like that. Everything is taken care of for us, we just have to show up at school or work, do our job, go home and sit in front of the TV and turn off our brains. We don’t even need to think anymore. We live in a culture where young people know more about the life of Lindsay Lohan than they do about what is going on in our parliament. Why? How did this possibly come about and why don’t people care?…

One day I was swimming through the ocean in Hawaii. I was going to my house and all the sudden I found a purple puddle. I was very curious what it was. I swam over there to look at this purple puddle and all the sudden a shark hit me and I fell into it. Then I was all purple and I tried washing it but it didn’t come off. Now I am a purple fish that lives in Hawaii and smells like coconuts.…

Sadly, America today is not what we had hoped for what we want our future to be. More deaths and destructive incidents have occurred over race. No one is able to walk the streets safely without being questioned or afraid for their lives. The people of color live in fear each and every day of their lives because of the color of their skin. There is no one that we are able to trust our lives, justice, and freedom with. Whereas white people have nothing to fear because they have never felt this way before and will never face this barrier the vast majority of America has faced. They have someone they can trust, be protected by, and live their full rights in having freedom. In return minorities have received this delusion of the ever promised freedom for which we originally came for. America is this way because of how we are brought up in the world. It begins with our family and how they perceive race then it is taught to us…

Our dollar bills have the quote of “in God we trust” and our Pledge of Allegiance has “one nation under God”. The Supreme Court now has a new judge who has strictly made decision based on his faith. Their faiths may not be the same as you and I profess. Your religion may not be the same as his and he may not have a religion at all. We have been taught about the US Constitution since we were in elementary school, I remember singing a song about James Madison writing about the Constitution which includes the 10 amendments. The first amendment is the freedom of the people to exercise any belief they choose to follow. This was in 1787 and Madison purposely wrote this amendment to break away from how the British ruled over them.…

Imagine… you are getting all dressed up for that big day. You get anxious and scared because it’s the graduation for eighth grade. You get all dressed up and put on your gown and cap. Then you arrive at the school. You sit in the assigned seat and watch the children before you get up and shake hands. You feel your hands get clammy as you wait. You wait till you hear your name and realize that it’s your time to shine. You stand up and hear the creaking of the harwood on your shoes. Then you feel your hands and wipe them down, but when you get up there you shine like a supernova. Everyone's eyes are on you. You realize that it’s your time to show who you are and time to reflect on your legacy here. A legacy is what you leave behind for people…

When I look around at people, and the way they act and respond to situations in life, I can’t help but wonder what it is that makes them act one way or another. Like complete asses in situations that don’t call for it, or other times when I feel like I can’t deal with something, there are those people who seem to have the patience of saints. I wonder if it is really the life they have lead and have been brought up to lead that crates their personalities for today. Does the fact that they have the warmest most loving supporting family make it easier for them to succeed in life? If there dad left when they were young, does it make it harder to trust people for them? Through the life I’ve lead myself; I’d have to believe that this is true. Now I can’t say that this is fact of course, but I will say that I’m sure if it was really thought upon, anyone could relate some aspect in their lives to how they were brought up. Then unfortunately as times passes as it surely will, you begin to lose people you love, people move, people pass away, family members divorce and move in different directions in life and nothing feels the same as it once did anymore. Even though this happens, you are still the person you are, on account of family and the values passed down to you. Though the times have changed, nothing in you has changed and you know the importance of the times past, then unspeakably and without warning, something triggers all those times in your mind and you can’t help but feel good.…
