Graduation Speech: Turpin High School Administration
Turpin High School Administration: I’d like to begin by thanking all of you for making our school a great place to learn and prosper. Principal Spencer, your infectious smile and kindness along with your impressive leadership skills make you a very respectable figure. Mr. Lee, Mrs. Eberhard, Mr. Dumford and Mr. Frye, I’d also like to thank you for your continuous leadership and support to not only me, but the rest of the student body. I feel as if it is my responsibility, being a part of the Forest Hills School District for 9 years now, to bring attention to the food restriction that has been put in place within the past 2 years.

Before my class came to Turpin, it has been said that students were able to eat in classrooms throughout the day with no issues. Some days, teachers would even bring in donuts for their homeroom.

At our age, we can take care of ourselves. We know what we can and can’t eat. We can clean off a table ourselves if we feel uneasy or unsafe about the situation. We are old enough. How are the people who are restricting us from eating going to function in the real world? How will the grocery ship for themselves? How will they go to restaurants?

I see how this could cause controversy. Many would see it as unfair or unjust to allow everyone to eat anywhere in the building. I do care for my peers and believe their safety is very significant, but I am confident that they can take care of themselves. I do not believe that we should ban food in our school.

It is unfair to those who want to be able to eat throughout the day. Those who have allergies are equally as capable as those who don’t to take care of themselves. We are old enough to drive cars. We are old enough to keep track of our grades. We are old enough stand up for ourselves. Therefore, we are old enough to care for

How would a student feel if they knew that the USDA allowed the school to provide meals which could make them unhealthy, or even sick? Lunch, as most know, is a very important part of a student’s school day. The food eaten at lunch should provide enough energy to complete the school day as a focused, learning student, and, for some students, to get through after school activities such as athletics and clubs; however, it is being seen more and more often that this is not the case. Chatham County Schools needs to improve its school lunches because the quantity, quality, and cost ratios are inadequate for the success of their students.…

One thing people have always told me is that I remind them of the person Randall Cobb from the book game changers. He has one of the most creative and unique personalities. He is passionate for the game of basketball by working hard on his time. Randall is also talented in the subjects math and science by pushing himself to make good grades. He also thrives to help people even if it's with school work, personal problems, or on the basketball court. The most obvious change is that a half cup of fruit or vegetables will be served with every lunch. If school districts don’t comply with the new mandates, they won’t be reimbursed by the federal government for their lunch program. The school lunch changes are a responsible response to what health experts call an epidemic. An estimated 23 million children and teens in the U.S. are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic. Lastly, the new school standards are a good idea. Keeping kids healthy and happy is what the cooks would rather do. Not everyone may like the school changes, but you need to keep kids from obtaining diseases, help them try new foods, and try to get them to intake more fruits and vegetables. If you don’t like it, do not blame the cooks, or better yet, don’t eat it. Do you think new school lunches are a good…

Schools have recently been reconstructing their lunches to prevent childhood obesity and create healthier environments. Although people may think the answer to the problem is taking away certain foods and stopping homemade lunches, only through the influence of healthy parents, control over cafeteria items children are able to purchase, and tolerable food that’s still wholesome, will students be able to have nutritious and balanced school lunches, and in turn, healthier lives. If a child’s parent is able to make them a healthy lunch they should be able to, however, some schools ban homemade lunches and leave no other option than to eat a school lunch or the child will not eat. It's not like schools will begin forcing children to eat only approved foods; schools will be regulated so that the lunches provided are made with healthier ingredients. And for those griping about how nasty the food is: if we all give up a decent sum of money now, we will not have to pay slow steady taxes for the regulations, and with a decent amount of money something beneficial can actually be done. Taking out this problem with one swift swing would make it efficient, beneficial (unlike many other government programs), and increase our childrens' health. Also, children will be allowed to take food to school. Regulation does not mean communism!…

When schools switch their foods, it would need more room because healthier food is always fresh and schools usually have bags of frozen food to serve to the students, which isn’t healthy at all but it also does not take as much room as storing all the fresh food. It would also cost the schools a lot more. They would not be able to store leftovers and use them the next day. They would have to…
