Rhetorical strategies that will be discussed in this text are logos and pathos which will help make the author’s argument credible. Basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabar in his text “College Athletes of the World, Unite,” argues that college athletes get exploited. He supports his argument by giving examples of his own experiences, providing numbers that make his argument credible, and by making some type of comparisons to explain his reasoning. Jabar’s purpose is to inform people the value of a college athlete in order for the athletes’ to “bring an end to the indentured servitude of college athletes and start paying them what they are worth.” He adopts an irritated/pitiful tone for his audience, the readers of Jacobin.…

Kiwanis Basketball has provided me the opportunity to develop my fitness, friend group, and leadership abilities. KBA was a great reason for me to stay in good health, from eating right to getting a good night’s sleep on Saturday. Additionally, KBA surrounded me with a group of high school friends that love the game of basketball. Walking by your teammate in the school hallway is a sure way to get a wave or even a head nod. Lastly, KBA provided me an opportunity to expand my leadership qualities. The relaxed coaching style of most coaches allows players to step up and take charge on and off the…

Chris Jordan has delivered an incredible speech regarding to the issues that we are having in our society today. He did a great job with gathering the data of facts with using these raw language of data, and translate them into a more universal visual language. I think, that it is true that we tend to create these issues unconsciously with our behaviors. He also did a great job comparing the number people who died from smoking with number people that died during the nine eleven tragedy.…

Congratulations on being five classes away from graduating! I have about another one to two years left, and I am more than ready to be finished. Growing up with a dad who was All-State for Basketball, and a Grandfather who played Division I basketball; I was always expected to be good at ball. I was always decent but never quite lived to expectations. When I turned 12 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 3 scoliosis, which limited not only my quickness but my ability to twist and run normally. The basketball dynasty was coming to an end as I had lost a lot of athleticism. I was always on the middle team, not very good, not very bad, but I always tried new moves; which made me hard to guard. I finally quit all sports because my back couldn’t handle the stress, and I wasn’t prepared to go into surgery. One day as I was watching…

The intense roaring of the crowd gradually faded into the vast abyss of his mind. As the last seconds ticked away, his breath got heavier and he knew that it was now or never. He knew he had to make the shot, he could not just mess this one up. At that last moment when the ball left his hands flying into the air, time seemed to have slowed down as the buzzer went off simultaneously.…

As a player for the Hanford West basketball team, I was placed into situations that required me to step up and be the leader of the team. One of these situations was during a game when our most talented player had been injured. I know my teammates relied on me to be the one to look up to for all the answers. I was certain I would have to go beyond my capabilities to lead this unit to victory. The game started off horribly because of the evident lack of effort from our team. As the commander of this group of young men I knew something had to change. I stepped out of my comfort zone and became very vocal in order to get some motivation pumping through our veins. Every time my teammates made a play I would be sure to acknowledge them in some way, whether it was a high five or a nod. This made me realize feedback is essential when taking on the leadership role in order to boost self the confidence of others. As the game went on we managed to pull off an outstanding team victory.…

It was the middle of the summer and I was playing baseball in Jackson, Mississippi. I was playing for the Goodlettsville All-Stars. We were playing in the little league 10u world series. To get to the championship we had to win 8 games and it was single elimination. We had won 7 out of 8 games and we were playing our 8th game and it was the bottom of the third and I was playing left field. In the second inning I was felling drowsy so my dad gave me a Snickers and a Red Bull. I was for sure not drowsy anymore. I could feel the sugar rushing through my veins and I was on the balls of my feet waiting for the pitch to be thrown. When my pitcher threw the ball I had my hand in my glove ready for the ball if it was hit to me. WHAM! The ball was hit so far up in the air it looked like it hit the sun. When I realized that the ball was coming to me I was way too far back so I had to run as fast as I could and dive for the ball. I jumped as far as I could and stretched as far as I could. I barely caught it by snow coning the ball. Everybody was so proud of me that the screamed as loud as they could. We went on to win the game 4-1. The next day I woke up, jumped out of the bed, and put my uniform on. I was so excited, I was in the championship! I…

One thing people have always told me is that I remind them of the person Randall Cobb from the book game changers. He has one of the most creative and unique personalities. He is passionate for the game of basketball by working hard on his time. Randall is also talented in the subjects math and science by pushing himself to make good grades. He also thrives to help people even if it's with school work, personal problems, or on the basketball court. All in all he was almost exact the same person as I am he likes basketball, he helps others, and he does well in school.…

It was a chilly morning on the day of August 17 of 2015. Gray cotton balls covered the sky and a thin blanket enveloped the air. Faintly, little blue spots could be seen as the the sun came up from the horizon. Little did I know that today was going to be a manic monday. The alarm clock was blaring. BEEP. BEEP. Yawn. “Today is the day. High school tryouts,” I thought.…

My fellow seahawks, I want to first congratulate you all for making it to this momentous occasion. Graduating high school, who would’ve thought we'd make it to this day. It seems like just yesterday we arrived to South Lakes. We were little freshmens fighting with the locks on our lockers, trying to figure out where our next class was and generally looking lost and clueless. Now here we are as the upperclassmen, the seniors, ready to graduate and take a hold of our futures. In the beginning, we measured time in class periods which we felt like imprisonment, counting down the periods until eventual freedom. As the weeks passed, we measured it in semester, and later in years. We moved from being those clueless freshmen to the seniors who are…

Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith. Naismith introduced the game when we were an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard. The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. U.S. servicemen in World War II (1939-1945) popularized the sport in many other countries.…

Family, Friends, Fellow peers. I would like to welcome you all to the 2017 Holmes Jr High eighth grade graduation. One of our wonderful staff members once explained to me “I think you’re going to have to suck it up and deal with it.
