Graduation Speech
It’s a rare opportunity to be given this privilege to talk to young minds like you--the youth whose minds and thinking are ideal, pure and filled with enthusiasm. Our theme is "The Graduate: A Partner Towards Transformational Society, An Answer to Societal Change".

We cannot effect social change if we ignore the social problems that are in our midst nowadays facing our very eyes. We should dig deeper to the root causes of these social problems.

Every day, every hour, and every minute of our lives, we hear, we see the social problems besetting our country and our community. There is poverty, corruption in the government, violence, drug addiction, crimes, injustice and so on as if they are here to stay. Are there no more solutions for these ills of society? How and when can we stop this? The real root causes of these problems are the values of the people which they were brought up.

Diploma is nothing without moral values. We have intelligent people in our society but they do not possess the right values. They think only for themselves. We have intelligent graduates but they ended up as greedy politicians and greedy businessmen. We have intelligent graduates but they are also indifferent, self-centered, irresponsible and lazy. What the society needs now are graduates who are disciplined, hardworking, honest, hospitable, makiKapwa, makaDiyos at Makabayan, not intelligent alone. Graduates, I encourage you to participate in our Sangguniang Kabataan actively in all its programs and activities. Let us always relive the bayanihan spirit and start it with the SK.

It’s alright to aim for success in life. But true success is not only with becoming rich in material respect but rich with moral values. To our graduates, let’s not forget our Filipino values. Let’s keep our moral fibers intact as we go along the ladders of success.

We know we cannot transform our society overnight. We know we cannot do it alone. As the future leaders of our society, you,

Throughout the years society has changed us as people. It has drove people to do things that will be remembered in history. But we still pose the question, “How does society impact individuals?”. The three most pressing social issues in the United States today are the economy, lack of appropriate education, and our priorities. In the U.S. today our national debt is over fifteen trillion dollars. Our national unemployment rate is 8.5%. Big businesses seem to continue to flourish at the working classes’ expense. When the wealthy lose their jobs, they tend to have “nest eggs” or resources that they can rely on until another position comes available. Yes, they sometimes have to make sacrifices until they get other means of employment, but usually that doesn’t mean whether to feed themselves or their children. Many people have lost their homes and self-worth along with the economic down fall. This really leads into my next social problem: education. Our educational systems are flooded with all the politically correct information and the testing requirements, that we have lost sight of some value basic information. Many students are able to recite book knowledge, but cannot demonstrate basic common sense. Although, I know that classes like “home ec” are not popular anymore, but maybe a small portion should be mandatory. Teaching our youth about balancing their personal budgets might lead to someone helping our national debt. And if they learned about nutrition and how to cook, then maybe obesity would decline. Finally, is the concern over our nation’s priorities. We say that freedom, security, education is all important, but look at what we spend our money on. We pour millions of dollars into professional athletes, but not into our children’s education or their educators. When we have to wait at airport security or are subject to a luggage search we grumble, but yet we demand security. We want freedom to choice anything we want, but protest when others choose differently than us. There are more social issues I would love to discuss, but with any of these issues come needed resolution that I unfortunately do not possess.…

I must first remind you of the unrest among our fellow students before I begin to examine the pandemonium we currently suffice as home. Our generation is at war with the complicated reality of this stringent society and we must no longer allow mainstream practices to dictate our freedom. The time is now for us to shed the constraints of our parents’ generation and provide a change that will bring authenticity to America’s youth! We standup not just for ourselves but for those of tomorrow and to change the norms of today.…

The question, What can fix society's problems, can be answered through modern thoughts and old literature. Some way that can help fix society's problems are having people worry less about their money and fame and more about rebuilding their society up and having more people working together instead of against each other. It's all about equality, groups like black lives matter or big feminism parties aren't helping the problem they are making it worse. The literature that going to be discussed are forms of fiction and essays that date back to the mid 17th century to the end of the 18th century, which are called A Journal of the Plague Year and A Vindication of the Rights of Women.…

Everywhere we live, we face many social problems. Considering the amount of social problems people encounter in their life is a tremendous amount but do all of them have solutions? Also, do all of these people learn something from their own social problem? In Leading The Way: Young Women’s Activism for Social Change edited by Mary K. Trigg, this anthology includes essays by young activists. In chapter twelve, Giving Voice to the Unheard by Kristen Lyons Maravi, she mentions about her own social problem with poverty and how much it had affected her. Also, she finds her own solution to her problem. Moreover I would like to compare this chapter with another chapter because these two chapters are very similar to each other, chapter one, Going Back Home by Kristy Clementina Perez. Perez discusses that she grew up in Perth Amboy struggling to figure out her place in the world. Also Perez mentions, when she was old enough to realize that life was imperfect and before she knew that some people lives were more difficult than others. Even before she added the words “difference” and “inequality” to her own vocabulary. Even though Perez discovered the world isn’t perfect, she wasn’t scared of poverty because she’s very familiar with it already. She also finds a solution to her own social problem like Maravi.…

Just like in a competition, society has been forced to change and evolve drastically according to every human need. Although it is obvious that it must have certain adjustments every now and then to work along with individuals, transformations are now more frequently. This shows the loss of power and lack of control of society over the population. It can be showed especially with failure attempts to get power back by creating new and unnecessary needs based on material objects and possessions. Which have replaced humans ' sense of spirituality and self-criticism, about what one really needs to get liberation and transcend in this life.…

It is a well-known fact that the universe is constantly changing. Throughout history, empires have risen and fallen with peoples created and destroyed. Mahatma Gandhi wrote, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Many people complain that the world needs to be changed in some way. However, no one is willing to actually put time and effort into being the change. Many people now are starting to realize that sitting around complaining about everything isn’t going to work and teenagers today are starting to make a difference. I think that I have a great way to get rid of one of a huge problem in society today.…

    Social Issues In America

All humans live on earth and earth alone. They all share one world, one planet, and one universe. They only have each other to depend on when things get rough, but instead of standing together as one, they are broken apart by social issues that stand in their way. These social issues further damage the relationship between races, social classes and genders. They cause a rift among them and the gap might not be salvageable anymore. Arising social issues such as racism, classism and sexism disturb the once peaceful way of life and these issues are projected through one’s own action. The root of these social issues is the treatment of one race to another, one social class to the inferior ones and one gender to the opposite. They are very prevalent…

First of all, the single most important thing we can do to improve society is to improve ourselves. If the 'unit' improves can the 'whole' be far behind. More often than not we blame our neighbor, our state, and our leaders for all the ills around us. But if we can only make a little improvement to our own lives we can further the cause by a step. We need to be brave and subversive in an appropriate, non violent way and serve as a role model for the people around us. For example, if we think that racism is wrong than the first step we could take to…

Undignified – this is what many of “Iskos and Iskas” have become after leaving the University and after experiencing a college life under the privilege of a scholarship using the money of the Filipinos. Who would’ve thought that those students whom the citizens thought would help our country, just betrayed them who made it possible for all the Iskos and Iskas to study in the most prestigious University in the country. Well I guess, the fact that many of my fellow Iskos and Iskas have taken the wrong path just made the professors and the administrators worry so much and the only thing I can do as a freshman, is to act with honor and excellence, for a real Iskolar ng Bayan lives as an honorable and excellent man. However, in achieving a life of honor and excellence, I must follow three steps to help me achieve the life a real Isko must live. First is to believe in God and in my abilities. Many students go the wrong way because they have forgotten that they have whatever it takes to be successful. I must always remember that I passed the UPCAT which means, I have what it takes to be in UP and all I have to do is to boost my self-confidence, have faith in God and believe that my abilities and skills will help me survive my college years in the university. Second, I must exert more effort. like for example, reading our lessons in advance or reviewing the topics our professors had discussed. Yes,it is necessary to have faith and to dream of achieving something, but for me to be able to achieve my goals, I have to put my dreams into action. This may be harder than the first step, but this will be my stairway to my goals, for an honorable and excellent man always exerts more effort than what is needed. Lastly, I must always remember that whatever happens, even if I flip the whole world, I still owe the people of our country a big favor. Because of this, I want to give back to the people, to return the favor they had once given me.…

Third, social problems are an outcome of overpopulation. The wisdom says, “Do not look at what people have. Look at what you have,” but if some people have nothing, and others have everything, that leads the poorest of poor become envious and jealous. Consequently, the envy and jealousy lead those people to be averse to everything around them. That either makes them successful in order to live a better life or that just occupies them until it makes them have biggest problems!…
