ST AUGUSTINE SECONDARY SCHOOL
GRADUATION VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH

Good morning to my fellow graduates, Madam Principal, Vice Principal, Parents, Teachers and specially invited guests. We! are graduating this morning. Can you believe that just five years ago we were in the very same positions as the current form ones are now? As we walked into these halls some of us were nervous, scared, some may have even been anxious on the first day of school. we had to figure out how we were going to fit in, in such a big school. We were the freshmen the low men of the totem pole but as time progressed we got more comfortable with the school, the other students, the teachers and with each other. Now five years later we're leaving the school behind to a whole new crop of students. it has been a long five years and a short five years. long, because of all the drama an tedious homework, the boring reading and the late-nights into early-morning trying to finish a project or an SBA and all the other little pratfalls that hit us in school. Short because of the lifelong friendships, the lasting memories and truly interesting and amazing things we learned between the occasional bits of drudgery. but good or bad, long or short we will always remember this place and all of our teachers who helped us along the way. Our hard working teachers helped us organize this entire ceremony and the grand ball at the HYATT tomorrow. i think they deserve a round of applause for that.
The end is very emotional. There's bound to be a lot of tears and nostalgia. What we fail to remember is that the end is simply the transitory phase before something else begins. We're going to miss all the good times we had here and all of the people we have bonded with, but dwelling on the past is like selling yourself short of all the bigger better things the world has to offer..... so shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among stars.
St. Augustine Secondary is a very unique school. there is absolutely no other school quite like the 'Green Machine' . If it weren't against the rules i would bet all the money in my pocket (though it isn't much) that there is no other school in Trinidad that's ever had a riot for boxlunch, rhythm section and all. No other school, I'm sure has come to a point where they had to appoint boxlunch police as we at this school called them and I think my friend Tekeel can especially relate to that.
I, like everyone of the graduating class of 2013, will recall the football games where the entire school would fill up the stands, the drama festivals that we had the honour of hosting right here in our very own school hall, and all the achievements we have madeand the trophies we have won over the years, not just because we are popular school but because we strive for excellance as our motto says. But St Augustine isn't just about the sports and the drama. Beforeus right now in these front rows are this country's future leaders. At our recent achievement day students received awards in different subject areas that proved the students can strive in their own unique way. The majority of students who wrote the CXC exam in January obtained favorable results. Many students got one's, two's and some may have even gotten three's but that still says that you are capable and you are willing to put out the effort to achieve your goals. Even the ones that didn't do so well can strive toward improving their academic performance. Keep your head up, and keep trying because you are never a failure until you give up.
Over the five years we became more concerned with what type of shoes we wore, who had the best looking Jansport bag and all the other material things that didn't even matter because at the end of it all despite our differences, we are really all one big family, one big family despite the different career paths we choose. some of us may stay here to do A'levels, some may go to UWI,SBCS or ROYTEC and some may go to trade schools because this school is filled with talented individuals. others may even take a year or two off to figure out what exactly they what to do with their lives because sometimes you only realize what you are suppose to be doing by doing what you are not supposed to do.
So, Graduates we urge you to remember that coming from the best, you should be your best and anywhere you go, you burn with the brightest flame, so every must know that you came from St Augustine..........Oh and one more thing to remember.......
WHO IS THE BEST? GUSTINE! IN THE EAST AND THE WEST GUSTINE! WHO RUN THE ROUTE (ROUTH)? IN THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH GUSTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve grown up with all of you. We’ve laughed and cried together. Though, as I leave, as we all leave, I think about how we’re not going to be all in this together anymore. As the end of our time together grows closer, I want to look towards the future. Yes we’re graduating, but just as Carol Burnett says, ‘We don’t stop going to school when we graduate’. We may be leaving, but we’ll never stop learning. Each new day will be a new adventure. We’ll make new friends and gain new experiences. Yes, I know this all sounds incredibly cliché, but that’s the point isn’t it? School if anything, was a love / hate relationship. We had our ups and downs, and just like school, life is going to be the same. So I encourage you to look back on your own schooling lives; take your mistakes and learn from them.…

Senioritis Senioritis is commonly known around all high schools. According to the Merriam Webster, this term means an ebbing of motivation and effort by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades. Senioritis is also considered a psychotic disorder. This word is not an actual sickness or disease in high school seniors, it’s just laziness because they’re getting close to the end. History…

There is only a history of this controversy as long as video games have been around, but shorter than that because in videogames early years there were almost no violence in most of the games. Like pong for example you would only hit a ball back and forth, sounds boring right but in actuality it were so popular in its day then something better replaced it (glazer, 2). A never ending sequence where video games will only advance as time goes on. This is an arguable issue because of the belief that video games are bad for you but, there was and is no proof that video games are bad for you. This has been an issue for about as long as the N64 has been around.…

As a student of the UIC's Honor College I believe that I will bring new innovative ideas to my fellow students and to those around me. I not only will aspire to better myself, but to encourage those around me to be the best student they can be. As the youngest sibling I have endured through many challenges. From struggling to explain my opinion about a subject in a way that will back up my reasoning to asserting my role as a leader. Although at times I have felt like giving up, I have prevailed. I learned how to state my opinion in a way that is informative, yet not rude. One challenge that I felt I excelled in exceptionally is being a leader. I have immersed myself in multiple school activates that leadership is a necessity. I am currently the president of the twelfth grade book club and a board member of the Senior Committee. With the skills that I have learned as a result of those positions I will be able to implement them in the classroom and in school events. As a student of UIC’s Honor College I plan to make use of all the advantages given to me. With the benefits provided to me I plan to take advantage of the honor courses that apply to Physical Therapy. I would also like to study abroad if I were given the opportunity to because I believe that you can learn a lot by immersing yourself in different cultures. It would be an honor for me to take part in the Honor College as a tutor because as a student who has had the experience of being both a tutor and a student I know that it can be a rewarding experience.…

“Just one word … plastics,” the statement that alone can summarize Mike Nichols’ 1967 film, The Graduate. However, when Mr. McQuire tells the movie’s main character, Ben Braddock, that there is "a great future in plastics" he finds it irrelevant and escapes to be alone in his room. However this comment surreptitiously creates a parallel to everything we see in Ben’s life. Whether it be the apprehensive relationship with his parents, an alienated affair with Mrs. Robinson, or the near unsuccessful pursuit in finding the man within, the film conveys a strong sense of how fear and self doubt can lead to the ultimate downfall in a person.…

Looking back at the way my life has been so far I am both surprised and proud of myself for continuing to push myself to success. Using the fact that I am the child of two high school drop outs as the fuel to my fire. I will be the first in my family to graduate, setting a good example for my two younger sisters. I am the only child of my Father, and my Mother’s oldest daughter. After five years of being raised by a single mother, and having the support of our church, my mother got married and the ability to have one place I called ‘home’ was ruined. My family moved every year, sometimes two times a year since I was roughly five. I have attended a total of fourteen schools, always being ‘the new kid’… knowing I would never have those childhood friends to go back to. I managed to stay positive and keep my grades up, earning me a spot in the Cambridge program at North Marion Middle School, a program that offered Eleventh and Twelfth grade classes while you were in Eighth grade. Later, while my mother and her husband were going through a horrible divorce, my mother, my sisters, and I relocated to Immokalee Florida, where we have been living for the past two years, the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere. During the process of divorce, my stepfather filed for immediate removal of the minor children (my sisters) and was granted custody of my two sisters, five hours north of Immokalee.…

It’s important to set goals while your attending college. My goal is to graduate Argosy University with a Bachelors’ Degree in Psychology with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. I chose to return to school and complete my goals for several reasons. My three main reasons are; to set a good example for my children, gain a sense of accomplishment, and to land the career of my dreams. My motivation comes from intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. Accomplishing my academic goals will reward me internally positively affecting my family and also give myself the feeling of accomplishment. My external rewards will come as a larger paycheck from landing the career of my dreams. Your attitude towards the learning process can help you achieve your goals and they can also…

“Graduation, the hush-hush magic time of frills and gifts and congratulations and diplomas.” You weren’t lying when you said that Maya Angelou. May 19th, 2013 I had dreamt of that day for almost four years. I know I can’t be the only person who feel this way. I remember it as if it was just yesterday. So many different emotions going through my mind all at once. Happiness, Sadness, I felt relieved because it was almost over but at the same time I felt anxious and overly excited to just leave and go far away. 389 seniors were going to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. After all, our class had the biggest percentage of graduates who were actually…

As I started senior year, I had high hopes of defeating my two headed personal dragon, procrastination and disorganization. I had well thought out plans on how to annihilate this nefarious beast, however, I forgot to factor in a huge part of senior year- senioritis. Senioritis has not only made it impossible to defeat my dragon, it has made it preposterous to even care. Frankly, I am not disappointed in myself. Although triumphing over my dragons would have been astonishing, I am completely satisfied with the amount of work I have been able to accomplish, not only during senior year but throughout all of highschool.…

I can remember as far back as when I was four years old, I always wanted to be a cheerleader, I could always see myself dressing up in the little suit with the big colorful balls on my shoes and the adorable little skirt with the matching top. I remember hearing my mom tell the stories of when she was in High school and how hard she tried to make it on the squad of her cheerleading team, finally after trying out for two years, she finally made it, she became the cheerleading captain of her team until she graduated high school. I dreamed of growing up and being just like my mom. Many nights I can remember sitting in front of the television singing and dancing along with the cheerleaders on cartoons shows, and movies. When I was in third grade I was on the little Savage cheerleading team for my school, Bennett Elementary in Broken Bow Oklahoma, I just loved being in front of all people at the Lil league games. I really thought I was a star on the sidelines of the football field. I continued to be cheerleader through Junior High. I attended cheer camp for three years in a row and learned a lot of cheers and cheerleading stunts and tumbling.…

To some people Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. may be known for controversial media clips that aired during the 2008 Obama campaign. However, to those who truly know or have taken the time to study his work, those clips are an unjust representation of the divine man of God that Rev. Jeremiah Wright is. Rev. Wright is pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ located on the Southside of Chicago; widely known for the motto he established during his 36 years of ministry at Trinity, “Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian” (tucc) his leadership helped the congregation grow from 87 to over 8,000. “Dr. Wright’s efforts made Trinity – long considered in theological circles, a model for the black church- one of the most politically active and socially conscious churches in the nation. When he retired the church had over 50 active ministries with social justice advocacy at the core of its theological perspective.” (jeremiahwright) His dedication to the community and passion for social justice makes him more than deserving to have the next charter school on the Southside of Chicago named in his honor.…
