When the Game Stands Tall

I have chosen a movie that I have watched recently with fellow peers and teammates from Donovan Catholic High School. The title of this spectacular movie is “When the Game Stands Tall.” The significance of the title designates to the great coaching staff which reached into the hearts of the football players, not only making them outstanding, but making them grow into true men with heart, dedication, and compassion. Based on an extraordinary true story, this movie is about lessons and depicts some such as hard work pays off, play with pride, it is not about the streak but about the team, and it does not matter whether your stronger or faster, it matters if you play with heart! This movie is about De La Salle High School having the greatest winning streak in all of football history. With 151 wins and counting this team did not worry about anything but to continue the streak or be on the “Streak Team,” later on learning of what it actually took to carry on that special streak. This movie takes place in California, “The Golden State.” The setting is important because some of the best football teams reside in this state giving importance the entire movie. There is a book to this spectacular movie in which I have not read but plan to.
When the Game Stands Tall is about a legendary football coach, Bob Ladouceur, who takes the De La Salle football program from the bottom of the chain to a team with 151 winning game streak. Though the rising senior p layers do not know what it takes to continue a 151 winning streak and that their season will be tougher than ever. This relevant plot summary maintains interest to me because it gives me a valid description of the movie while still keeping a great deal of suspense to know and see what happens next. Out of the entire movie I would recall that near the ending of the movie there was an extremely memorable

Let me first begin by saying I am a huge sports fan. I played almost every sport growing up and have always loved watching sports, in particular college basketball and any type of football. I saw Hoosiers a few times growing up and enjoyed it every time. In my opinion it is one of the greatest sports movies of all time. The acting of Gene Hackman is definitely an Oscar winning performance. Even though this is not based on a true story it is very believable to me that this event could have occurred, and for that reason it enhances the emotion I feel when they fight through diversity and win the state championship. All of the above are the reasons I chose this film, I knew I would enjoy it and enjoy writing about it.…

“If we prepared our kids academically as we prepare them for wining state championships, there is no telling where we would be now.” (Bissinger 134) Boobie Miles’ day in school consists first of a language arts class where the students are at least two years behind their peers in their skills. He is doing a research paper on the life of zebras. Then, he goes to Algebra I, a class he should have taken as a freshman. He is barely passing. After lunch, there is creative writing where he spends time playing with a purple plastic gargoyle-looking monster and writing a few words of a story. This is his favorite class, because the teacher doesn’t expect much from him. She sees football as all a kid like Boobie has going for him. He eats some candy and eventually leaves early for football practice. It’s not only going on at Permian, Dallas Carter goes onto win state championship but faces severe penalties the next year for their grade tampering because the principal changed one on the player’s grade to a passing grade so that he could play in the championship game. That shows how people were so consumed by the want to win that they couldn’t acknowledge that they were making mistakes and had their priorities mixed…

Movies not only serve as a source of entertainment, but they convey a message to its viewers. To convey these messages, movies relate to the viewers lives and touch on their emotions. In the movie Coach Carter, it is evident that this movie is able to communicate deep messages that influence its viewers. After watching an awful game of Richmond versus Saint Francis, Ken Carter, the protagonist, takes up the basketball coaching job at Richmond High School. Being a steadfast man, Coach Carter deals with the disrespectful Richmond basketball team by issuing contracts and imposing harsh consequences when his players are out of line. Through hard discipline, the Richmond Oilers learn the meaning of respect and teamwork. This movie illustrates that people become so caught up with winning that they forget to recognize the irrational choices they are making. To…

In order to delineate the notional structure for The Velveteen Rabbit, one must first assess the correct discourse type. In reviewing the narrative, procedural, behavioral, and expository discourse types, The Velveteen Rabbit is undeniably a narrative discourse in surface and notional structure. The plot or notional structure of the story provides insights into what one would imagine is a toy's ultimate dream of being loved and becoming real. The story begins with the phrase, "There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid." This sentence is an example of a formulaic aperture. This narrative discourse takes us from its introduction as a new toy stuffed in a stocking on Christmas morning through an early period in a boy's adolescence as seen through the eyes of a toy rabbit made of velveteen.…

The short story Poison by Roald Dahl is set in India when it is still under the British rule. In this story the theme is represented by Harry, who thinks that the krait has crawled on his stomach and has made Timber call a doctor for help to solve the situation. The entire time I was reading the story, I thought that the main conflict is between the Harry, Timber, Dr. Ganderbai and the krait on Harry's stomach. But in the last few paragraphs, I realize that Dahl's real point is about racism. For many hours and intense work to diffuse the krait on Harry’s stomach they discover that there was no krait in the first place. This represents the theme that Harry had a misunderstanding with his sheets and Timber and the Dr. Ganderbai could have been avoided. Harry was perfectly willing to let Dr. Ganderbai help him get rid of the krait as long as his life wasn’t in danger, but as soon as Ganderbai dared to question Harry, he made rude nasty remark to the Dr. and showed his true colors. Roald Dahl writes the story using tension and suspense. He makes the readers uncertain about the characters and the krait. The suspense in the story made me turn the pages. I felt frighten for Harry and made it hanging in midair. Roald Dahl writes Poison in first person point of view. It was a great story of my favorite short stories. It really made me want to finish the story and know what happens to Harry and the krait.…

Where I’m from we don’t have a football team or a marching band, which means there’s really no excitement for getting ready for the first game. The sports my high school was always prepared for was lacrosse and basketball. Knowing that I was finally coming to a school with a football team made me even more excited to in college. Though, I had heard the rumors about the team never winning games it didn’t bring me down because I knew for sure that no matter what I was going to enjoy every moment of the game. Walking to the stadium with friends put me into that mood knowing that the night was going to be very eventful, whether we were to win or lose the game. Personally I was just ready to hear the band, cheer my team on, and have a blast. I wanted to support BC to the point I had the school colors and had my face painted. After so many years of always going with someone to their football and not my own school, this was finally the time for me to live it up. I stayed until half time to hear the band. I can honestly say that for it to be my first college football game I enjoyed myself with the group of people I was and would do it again, plus with our football team to win the…
