Gracie Grime Analysis
Gracie Grime

Written by
Nick Ling

Illustrated by
Grace Fraraccio

A very strange hobby had Gracie Grime while others collected stamps,

She collected time.

She saved it all, every second, minute, hour

By doing strange things,
Like having breakfast in the shower

Or riding her bike while making a cup of tea

Or feeding her cats while playing the ukulele

She saved it all till
She had too much
To spare

So she thought of some ways to spend it with care

“I could scarves for giraffes

Glue lobsters to phones
Or make unicorns out of ice cream cones”

Then the perfect plan popped into her brain

She gave it to people who felt down and beat
Like Sam who was hungry and living

This questions power dynamics within the novel. There is an ongoing motif of attempting to tame Janie for her own good. This is first presented with Nanny, who marries Janie off after, ‘Johnny Taylor [was] lacerating her Janie with a kiss.’ Through the choice of the word ‘lacerating’, Hurston connects the act of kissing, to whipping. To lacerate, means to tear or make deep cuts; this definition starkly contrasts the soft and vulnerable nature of a kiss. The delineation resonates with Nanny recounting the time where the slave master’s wife was whipping her, ‘but dem last lick burnt me lak fire’ . The only difference between the way Nanny explained her beatings and the brutality of Janie’s kiss, are simply a matter of linguistics; Nanny uses…

The physicalities of the three films I chose, Mamma Mia!, The River Wild, and Julie and Julia, were quite different since Meryl Streep played three separate roles, each having nothing to do with the others. However, there were a few striking similarities between the films since Streep was still herself, and she has mannerisms that are specific to her. For example, in Julie and Julia, Meryl Streep plays famous American cook, Julia Child, who was 6’2” when she was living. While Streep is only 5’6”, the make-up artists obviously had to make her seem taller with heels or maybe even having standing on something in some scenes. But Streep had to have held herself taller than she actually was, and eight inches is plenty to make up, even with…

Immigrants from all over the world make the journey to America for many different reasons but with one goal in common, a better life, and they have been doing so for centuries. What makes America what it is today is it’s diversity, a “melting pot” of cultures and traditions coming together as one. But this is not how the White Anglo Saxon Protestants from the 19th century (WASPs) viewed it. WASPs did everything in their power to keep immigrant groups like the “dirty Chinese” and “violent Irish Catholics” out, giving them negative stereotypes and creating laws to mark them as an inferior race. In the political cartoons “The Irish Declaration of Independence That We Are All familiar With” and “The Only One Barred Out” it is clear that the artists are portraying how…

I met Nicole Martin at an event where she was talking about her book titled Gracie's Ticket. She wrote the book to help children facing a situation that she lived for 19 years as a child sexually abused. She struggled to find a way to keep going after the painful trial that came back as a hung jury, and let her abuser walk away without a day in jail. She fought to escape reality through drugs and alcohol, suicide attempts only to discover in her darkest hour of desperation, a light of hope. God snatched her out of the flames and darkness that surrounded her, and showed her how to find life in Him. Through the love and the new gift of life in Christ, she found joy and peace for the first time in life. She met her husband Ben, and they…

I really enjoyed reading All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. I personally read it as a novel about a young boy’s quest for what life is all about as well as a sense of belonging, which is why I was surprised that even though he returns home, at the end of the novel, he soon leaves to continue West. Therefore, ending the novel with the reader questioning whether or not John Grady ever finds the place he truly belongs. John Grady Cole is a sixteen year old boy with a naive view of what life might be like, and he enters Mexico with this mindset and gets into various predicaments because of this. During John Grady and Rawlins time in prison they have a conversation with Emilio Perez, which really resonated…

This epigraph to Dorothy Allison’s Bastard Out of Caroline gives us insight to the story and guides us in the direction to show us the importance of the story. The quote “People pay for what they do, and still more, for what they have allowed themselves to become. And they pay for it simply: by the lives they lead.”- James Baldwin symbolizes a lot throughout this story. Although we all wanted justice in the end, it isn’t what we got.…

Diane Reay is Professor of Education at Cambridge University and a sociologist working within the area of education. In 2004, she published an article titled ‘’Mostly Roughs and Toughs’: Social Class, Race and Representation in Inner City Schooling’. This qualitative study report draws two main aspects of the Economic and Social Research Council project of children’s transitions to secondary schools in two London boroughs. On one hand, it depicts the positioning of inner city schools (with a predominance of working class and minority ethnic students) within local and wider social imaginaries of demonization. On the other hand, Reay’s work reports the strategies and understandings of different groups of working-class students in relation to…
