Government Hours Reflection
Some students in the U.S. are expected to learn the standard curriculum and not much else besides that, but this isn’t quite enough. In some states, such as California, students have the opportunity to help their society through Government Hours, and this would often determine them to be harder workers in their community when they grow older. The three activities I chose around my city were phone banking for Carson City Council recall, neighborhood discussion on peace and justice in Ayotzinapa, and surveying San Pedro citizens to improve LAUSD. These activities were helpful for my community, and my very own moral stance.

Although I don’t live in Carson, there was a certain city council member there that needed to be recalled for his negative

This time, we focused on a survey on the pros, cons, and fixes we could use for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Some of these issues were on about the size of classrooms, amount of students in a single classroom, thoughts on public against private schooling, and other little issues like those. A lot more people were interested in this event rather than the Carson City Council one, and I enjoyed it just as well. A certain person I remember calling was an old Mexican man, and although I’m not perfectly fluent in Spanish, we were still able to have a lengthy discussion on what improvements we would be able to make to our school system. I think my last round in the hours was very entertaining, and made me a lot more likely to join other events similar to these.

I didn’t have much of an expectation in the beginning of the semester regarding government hours, but it actually turned out to be really enjoyable, and an important lesson to me to continue after high school. From this, I learned about persistence through work, helping others even when it doesn’t benefit me, and having passion in the tasks I assign myself. Overall, I believe my government hours have been fulfilling and I am glad to have finished this

The topic my group talked about was the temporary immigration ban that President Trump ordered. I thought this was a good topic to talk about because being from south Florida there is a lot of hispanics and that may be a big problem for some of them. I thought it was very good for me to listen to my partners opposing views on it and compare our thoughts on deporting immigrants. I thought the mirroring part of the workshop was very well because you get to know if you're partners actually listened to your opinion and my partners listened very well to my opinions.…

My attendance to the deeper than DAPA community forum was a life learning experience. I am grateful to have attended the forum because I was able to learn and get informed about a big problem in our community. Before the forum I knew little to nothing about DAPA, and even less about the significance to undocumented people. The environment in the room helped me feel close to home because of the amount of Latino students present, the pan dulce and champurrado. Just learning a brief history of the policies of DAPA/DACA+ helped empower and enlighten me. The presentation was hosted by Fernando and Magdaleno. Both the hosts did a great job in making everyone feel comfortable and excited to be spending there Friday evening on campus. I learned that…

Dave Eggers is an author, editor, and publisher who suggests that college students should be required to attend public service. In Eggers’ excerpt “Serve or Fail” he backs up his proposal with his own experiences such as how he had benefited from the public services he had attended. Within the excerpt Eggers also explains how having college students attend public services is a great idea especially since the students have maturity, have time, and gain exposure. Although I agree with Eggers that students have maturity for public services, he fails to recognize that not every student has time.…

Thirty of those fifty service hours are a mandatory aspect of the junior year curriculum and must involve work with either the poor or marginalized. Personally, I chose to complete my necessary hours with the organization Outdoors for All, specifically working with the marginalized. Outdoors for All (OFA) strives to enrich the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through outdoor recreation by offering programs just as skiing, kayaking, and biking. I participated in their downhill ski program, teaching lessons to people ranging from four to thirty-five years old with a vast array of both mental and physical disabilities. Volunteering with OFA improved not only my teaching skills but my ability to work with all people regardless of their…

I went to the city council meeting in Elma. City council members present were Gerald Haar, Terry Granahan, Emily Ptacek, and Laura Zenner. One of the teachers took the podium addressing the school board with some concerns about her school having very few teachers. She told the board that the shortage of teachers meant that class sizes were large and the work load was heavy. She made the comment “if I look tired it’s because I am.” I was impressed by that statement because that teacher didn’t have to go around campus complaining instead, she went to the school board to let them know. Mary Jadlowski Assistant Superintendent discussed an AP program that allows high school students that qualify to start taking college courses before they graduate. Those were the most interesting things about the meeting in my opinion. Towards the end of the meeting President Dr. Olgletree discussed how they were going to spend their funds within the district and surrounding areas. I wasn’t really interested in that because I didn’t understand some of the things he was talking about. What was surprising is that after the teacher had been chosen to have her name on the new school almost everyone who was in the meeting had left excluding the Board of Education members. It seemed to me the audience cared about nothing else that was said because…

For my activity points, I attended the Plate of the Union political event, a group that is focused on getting healthy, affordable food to all Americans. The Plate of the Union holds monthly meetings at various locations around the city, at a variety of restaurants, focused on getting healthier foods on the menu, ones that support local farmers. This organization needs the government to pitch in, especially the President, since they would help bring more awareness to the cause and allow more funds to be put towards this problem.…

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

From this activity I have learn that just attending university and receiving grades is not all that is required to attaining a future with a pleasant job. Volunteering and work experience are also necessary, therefore, I would consider joining a volunteer or work opportunity while attending university. The next step I am going to take toward my preferred future is to obtain a job, I will do this by applying to jobs that require communicating with people, working with children or opportunity for networking. Another step that I can take is to volunteer at my old high school, I have already worked at an elementary school, and therefore it would be nice to see if I would have a similar or dissimilar experience at the high…

As a part of my study, I choose to make a survey and hand it out to see what types of results I would get. My answers varied, for I had many people tell me they thought that the age should be lowered to 18. These activities related to what I learned in the classroom because I learned that you are more involved and have the power to really make a change. You as a student are proposing different ideas to be able to present to the House of Representatives. This activity can really help me in the future for when I need to research and have a voice of my own to make a change I wish to see.…

I began to get caught up in my extracurricular activities, and my other homework assignments that my work ethic for the course began to falter. At the end of the quarter, it was evident that the work I was producing was insufficient for the grades that I wanted. The next unit following first quarter had a focus on court cases and law, which made the course more interesting. I began to spend more time on my notes and ask more questions, receiving clarification in my problem areas. After working hard and studying immensely for the rest of the year, my grade rose every quarter and I earned a higher grade to finish the year. Ap government has always been one of my proudest…
