“Women’s Rights are Human Rights”
The 4th World Conference on Women Plenary Session in Beijing (1995) had the opportunity to hear Hilary Clinton´s speech. This speech was considered persuasive, courageous and one point breaks too many in its demand for action. This speech had as the main feature, “The great challenge to give women´s voice everywhere whose experiences go unnoticed, whose words go unheard.” As well as Clinton said:
“Our goals for this conference, to strengthen families and societies by empowering women to take greater control over their own destinies, cannot be fully achieved unless all governments -- here and around the world -- accept their responsibility to protect and promote internationally recognized human rights”. (Clinton, 1995)
Likewise, she mentioned that if the conference had a message, was only one, “Human Rights are Women´s Rights and Women´s Rights and Human Rights”. Also Clinton recognized the effort of the women´s jobs and the role they playing in the life and in the world. Among the rights that were mentioned during the speech were access to education, health care, jobs and credit, the chance to enjoy basic human rights and legal; also adding the ability to participate fully in the political life of the countries.
In other hand, she talk about if the women´s rights are improved, so that it may help to bring new dignity and respect to women and girls all over the world, with these bring new strength and stability to families as well. Resulting in not only an improvement in their lives and in their families, but creates a better world.
Clinton shows that she understood clearly the topic, and made it clear that she is an important person. Also shown, to the audience, that she was competent with their knowledge and experience. “Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and families. Over the past two and a half years, I've had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my own country and around the world.”
As previously mentioned she is an important person, this situation gave her advantage when make a speech. By another side of the words she said she shows charisma and high level of confidence making a speech more credible.
Clinton not only describes the daily lives of women, but also refers to situations of abuse having to face them as examples of these are, the rape, abortion, abuse in some countries as acid burns, and in cases most extreme, is the female circumcision is practiced in some countries. With that she does a great emphasis to the horrific experiences that women of this age are still living.
To create an accurate picture of this situation Clinton mentions eight points of the most common atrocities women face. These points create a great stir among the audience as she begins her sentences with the phrase "is a violation of human rights", with this creates in the minds of the audience a more graphic picture of the purpose of her speech.
In addition found in his speech that creates equal rights both human and those of women, "If the term 'women's rights' were to be interchangeable With The term 'human rights' the world community would be a better place Because human rights effect the women who raise the world's children, care for the elderly, run companies, work in hospitals, right for better education and better health care."
Hillary Clinton wants, that these words can be exchanged and are accepted worldwide, also explains that the problem is not having a equity rights of women and the solution to this is to make a change, the which will have to create a world where women are treated with dignity and without DISCRIMINATION.
In conclusion, Hillary Clinton´s speech was writing very strategically to impact and persuade the audience. She was convinced and sure of the purpose of the speech and the way of the audience reaction can be considered reached that ´propose “spreading the word about discrimination on women”. It's a shame that although several years have passed since this speech was given, not see real change in the world. Next time hopefully have an audience with less reaction and more action.
Culture and Communication
The second part of this report is focus on the Chapter 1 “Culture and Communication”. Everyone represent and have theirs owns cultures, in which one have a unique form to communication among the member of a particular culture. Nevertheless these two concepts creates a big conflict when the people of one culture through to a cross-country experience. For this, is important to look forward some point to face the challenge to be overseas.
At a first point, understand the different cultures, and one must consider that every culture societies may differ between them, ie, some people show more attachment to their culture than others, theoretically this is known as High and Low Context Culture.
The meaning of these concepts, basically it can understand when the people communicate with others, if a person has a form to communicate elliptical, indirect or allusive is a High Context Culture. These are that cultures rely on the context, even the physical environment or internalized social context, to convey a large part or even all of a message´s meaning.
By other hand in cultures in which context is not assumed to be understood, messages are directly, are spelled out-fully, and put the thoughts into words, there are a Low Context Culture. In these cultures the meanings of the message is entrusted almost entire to works.
These types of High and Low Context Cultures could be observed when It have an Intercultural or Cross Cultural Communication. Intercultural is when examine the communication interactions between people of different cultures. By other hand Cross-Cultural communication the different is that just compares communication in different cultures.
In addition, other situation could be faced when occurs an individual reactions to unfamiliar Culture, this reaction in most of the cases is a receptive response or hostile reaction. Beside we needs to understand the importance of the self-knowledge, as some of the greater philosophers said, “To understand the other person, you have to understand yourself”.
After this review of the principal concepts for the Chapter 1, I explain myself experience about “Culture and Communication”. In 2008 to 2010 I had the opportunity to live in Beijing, and at a first travel to other country, this experience could be illustrate the gap that there is between two countries. First at all, I coming from a Latin-America country that basic it is total opposite than China in aspect as language, religion and culture. The great challenge in China is the possibility to communicate with the local people without misunderstandings. Likewise, the religion role play also a big picture, as Chinese Society are Buddhism the way of thinking is such different than a Latin society.
They are motive more for the values and principles that for many of years there are in the nuclear family as tradition and maintain the Chinese society closed from the new ideas. In other hand Latin people are more open mind and at the same time keeps the family values identify the Latin´s society. These facts at the moment to establishing a conversation make a barrier for a fluid ideas and reciprocity of the quality of information. I already have around 3 years in China and even with all this time, I could not have a communication at 100% of understanding or have ambiguity in the messages.
The most recent experience I has have is during this Master. Having classmate from more than 10 countries is such reflect of how show us the implication of the different culture and how is the communication´s development. The language like as culture and communication is and key factor in the Intercultural and the Cross-Cultural Communication.
In conclusion Culture, Communication and also Language is the keys factors to develop if you want to work or make relationship in others countries and without understand these factor is impossible have a successful business´s agreement.
