Goodwill Experience Paper
During the home visit, I was able to gain the trust of the nurse and feel comfortable performing skills with the guidance of the nurse. Through the Global Awareness Project, I was able to learn how to apply the determinants of health on a larger scale by researching information about a country.
With the Goodwill experience, I was able to learn how to communicate and interact with individuals who have special needs. By going to Door of Face, it allowed me to learn how to teach this population of men about their health. The teaching project at Goodwill was a great experience as I was able to educate that population and strengthen their knowledge about staying safe during daily activities.
I was able to apply my personal values on the importance

It was about two different groups of volunteers who attended, and we supported with handing out food to the people who need it. Has a community, we cannot just sit at home and act like the things that are occurring in the society does not affect us as well. Helping the people the community and seeing how some people need these kinds of organizations shows that we as a community are doing the job. The people are part of the society, and as a college student in the Public Administration field, it showed me that to move ahead as a society we have to carry everybody along. Also, by providing these resources, it keeps many of these people out of the street; and it makes the community improve as a whole. After seeing how this organization helps the community and also hearing what people say that we the society are not helping the poor, I believe that it is…

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

I knew that they collect and spread resources throughout the community. What I did not know was that they provide opportunity for people to complete community service as part of a sentencing. They do not just give them work to do but counsel and advocate for them as well. One of the people that I worked with when I volunteered was convicted for drug abuse. He had to do community service to meet his sentencing requirements. He also had to do drug counseling. The Major at the Salvation Army works with these people to help them get off drugs and become a productive member of society. I also worked with a few young men who were completing high school through an alternative school program. Then there was Major Carol and I working that day. It was nice to see such a diverse group of people working together to benefit the less fortunate in our community. It was our job to sort and organize food for the Christmas Baskets and the food pantry. They have close to 300 families on their list this year from Marinette and Menominee who will be receiving baskets this year. It is amazing that by volunteering 3 hours one Saturday morning; I will have affected the lives of that many people on Christmas this year. The volunteer assignment experience relates to the theme of our course by showing us that there are less fortunate people in our community and it is the responsibility of everyone in the community to…

However, this is a great opportunity for NP’s to intervene as well. For many of these patients it is extremely difficult to travel whether it be to visit the doctor or to return to the hospital. This would be the point where a NP could travel to the patient’s home like the home health nurse would and would be able to examine the patient at home. For example, a patient is being treated by a home health nurse for a chronic wound. The nurse suspects that the wound is infected and suggests that the patient be seen by their doctor or by a specialist in the hospital. Instead of the patient traveling, a wound care NP could come and see the patient at home and could save them a trip to the…

My priority as a home health nurse is to assist the patient toward a healthy regardless of absence of illness. I chose the Conservation Model created by Myra Levine because it was created to guide the nurse toward implementing interventions that my help the patient during illness. The model is designed to care for the individual towards health taking into consideration aspects in the individual’s environment that could affect him in that journey. The conservation model depends greatly on the nurse’s ability for observation and the identification of problems affecting the patient’s health. By visiting the patient at home, I have the opportunity to observe and understand firsthand the patient’s living situation and dangerous environmental factors in the community where he or she resides. Observation is a vital factor in Levine’s Conservation Model. (Schaefer, 2006; Leach, n.d.)…

I was able to learn about the importance of effective medical education and communication with my patients through creating nutrition materials on the different food groups and chronic ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart attacks as well as consulting with patients weekly to find out what they needed and desired to improve their health and how I could direct them to their needs. At Haven, I exchanged ideas with each of my patients on how they and their families can live healthier lives as I learned about their diverse lives and tried to make sense of it for them and others. Haven taught me how to become an effective listener, a fast learner, and an effective deliberator within a healthcare setting and serves as the foundation of those skills in my upcoming medical…

Throughout history, the nursing profession has went through many changes and advancements that has led to better care of the patient population. In the past, nursing has been based in the hospital setting with a focus on disease management and in this setting there have been clear cut roles such as the doctor, the nurse, the respiratory therapist, the physical therapist etc. However, recently there has been a switch in this model of care to a community-based healthcare initiative with a focus on health education and preventative care. With nurses based in the home setting, the roles have become less clear cut and more hazy. Nurses are taking on more…

People get involved in community service for a variety of reasons. For example, there are many who suffer from starvation and need someone willing to make sure they receive the necessary nutritional values. There are elderly people in this world who are looking for someone to talk to, and someone to comfort them. There are many people in the world seeking a friend and others who are searching for guidance or a mentor in life. Many people choose to give back to their community in different ways. Some choose a public service; others join organizations or even create a club or organization geared towards a specific task. Innovation is also very important to Goodwill Industries. “Innovation is the introduction of new goods and services” (Bateman and Snell, 2011, p. 9). While Goodwill Industries is distributing goods that are used, the services that are being offered are innovated. Goodwill has been improving the lives of many people by selling used goods at discounted rates and offering “job skills training and placement” (Social Media in Action: Goodwill Industries, 2011). Now Goodwill is networking to improve through sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube in order to listen to what the public has to say and to allow the public to know more about the organization. Goodwill has also come up with “innovations in community health in San Antonio, Texas” (Good Health at Goodwill, 2011). In this innovative plan, “Goodwill offers services through a mobile health care clinic or at a healthcare clinic located in a Goodwill retail store” (Good Health at Goodwill, 2011). All of these services would not be possible without the four functions of management. Through careful planning, organizing, leading, and controlling Goodwill is able to take a new idea, act on it, and follow through. Each of these steps are not only helping Goodwill Industries and the employees, it is also helping individuals, the public and the surrounding communities.…

I am looking forward to engaging our surrounding communities and sustaining our current volunteers. We are now looking towards presenting to our hospitals, and travelling to Castlegar and Nelson and going to their local health care facilities to attain new volunteers and health care partners. After promoting Patient Voices Network in our local communities we will work on further engaging them by trying to implement them into our nursing…
