Goodman Theatre Personal Statement
As an introduction of sorts, let me say this: I’m currently an undergraduate student at Miami University, majoring in Theatre and Creative Writing, minoring in French, and reveling in a relatively recently discovered passion for dramaturgy. I hope to be able to join the Goodman Theatre this summer as an intern with literary management and dramaturgy or with casting. Where can you go wrong with a theatre like the Goodman? Working with a company that’s well established and doing such varied and consistently high quality theatre is just the ticket for anyone starting off in the topsy-turvy and unpredictable world of the arts. When you’re looking to make your way into the professional sector of theatre, an internship with a wide array …show more content…
At the moment, with the amount of experience I have in dramaturgy, my professional goals stand simply at finding my niche in the dramaturgical world, and consequently finding a professional future somewhere within that niche. From working as a student dramaturge on Miami University’s production of In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play, I’ve reaffirmed my deep interest in the study of feminism and women’s roles throughout culture and history. Honestly, I’m the kind of nut who’ll really let loose in a library when I map out some time for …show more content…
I’ve acted, danced, sung, worked a follow spot, gained experience with directing, playwriting and criticism, and worked as a student dramaturge. I’m an extremely dedicated and organized member of my college campus, and am grateful to be a member of the Honors Program here at Miami University. Currently, I hold both an internship with the MU Press, where I assist with social media, marketing, photography, and research, and a part-time job as the assistant to the e-Marketing manager of AtlantaNewHomesDirectory.com. From all this, as well as my background in being a perfectionist, I’m very organized and great with time management. I’ll actually be graduating from Miami a semester early, which is something I’m very proud

Harry Hopkins, one of the founders of the program, hired Flanagan to direct the project because he had heard about the success of her current project at that time, the experimental theatre at Vassar College. "The Federal Theatre Project director was dedicated to building a truly national theatre, one that would provide food for thought as well as for the actors stomachs" (Gerdes, 155). Flanagan was a very dedicated director who wanted to do more than simply help give jobs to the many unemployed theatre people in America. Her intense passion for the theatre caused her to care deeply about the project's success, not only in lowering the intense unemployment numbers, but in bringing wonderful shows to the American public.…

Now, I strive to understand the motivations and backgrounds around me in order to form stronger relationships. Understanding people---fictional or living---is the key to truly being an empathetic individual that contributes significantly to a community. Because of this, I have chosen to Carnegie Mellon as the school to facilitate my growth as an active member of society; more specifically, the College of Fine Arts Drama program. This program would give me the tools to be a more emotionally intelligent, more analytical, and more passionate actress because of its specific curriculum, the class size, and the…

On July 11, 2016, I presented a booktalk to a group of ten female teens that are a part of the teen theatre group, the Saax Bradbury Players. The booktalk was hosted by an employee of the theatre, Jen Blalock. Because of rehearsals taking place in the theatre, the booktalk was given in the host’s home. The grades of the students range from rising sophomores to 2016 graduates. The ethnicity of the student group is ninety percent White and ten percent African American. The main interest of this student group is drama. Most of their time is spent in rehearsing and performing in children’s, young adult, and adult theatrical productions. These teens are truly diverse in the groups in which they relate. Their ages…

I got a glimpse of the Gilford High School drama department my freshman year by doing hair for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and fell in love. Within the next five years I see myself going many places. I think my biggest achievements will be completing a BFA at a California State University and enrolling into a graduate program at New York’s Pratt Institute. There will be many other important achievements and milestones I hope to reach on the way. I’ve always had big aspirations in terms of my education and something that has inspired me to be pursuant of those dreams is the encouragement of my friends and family. In our current culture having a bachelor’s degree opens many doors and brings forth opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable but increasingly a higher degree such as a masters is becoming increasingly necessary to set yourself apart from other candidates in pursuit…

I found myself once again standing on that ledge looking across the fissure, my heart pounding the walls of my chest, time slowing down. Afraid to take that leap of faith into the unknown, my body paralyzed by fear. Everything that I was running from finally caught up to me in those few moments of doubt and hesitation. I came back to my classroom, standing on the stage, the teacher calling my name. Why did I ever decide to take a theater class?…

For my Arts Organization Volunteer project I volunteered as an usher at the Lee Norvelle Center through Indiana University’s Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance department. Additionally I volunteered at the music venue the Bottom Lounge in Chicago, where I had also previously interned at over the summer. Because of my anticipation to seeing the extra credit speakers at the Industry Networking Club, and by now you probably have read many papers on the IU theater departments, I will write about the Bottom Lounge for my volunteer report as opposed to the IU theater, drama, and contemporary dance department.…
