Good vs. Evil
With good being terms of excellent, high quality, right, well-behaved, or even righteous. And Evil being in terms of morally wrong or bad, misbehaved, characterized by misfortune, and even bad conduct, we ask ourselves what constitutes good and evil. Good is an extremely broad concept that can concern love, happiness, life, charity, and even justice. Evil, also being a broad concept, is associated with deliberate wrong doing, discrimination, and even harm to others. We often catch ourselves getting into evil situations rather than good situations. For example, killing one person to save an entire tribe. In a way, it is an evil act as far as killing a person, but it also constitutes a good act for saving an entire tribe from one person trying to destroy it. Society tries to diminish situations that involve someone killing themselves or attempting murder to one person for no reason. But, when a situation arises like above, society makes sure that the world will know about an accomplishment concerning his/her act. Anymore, a person will try to give themselves a name and try to “fit” in for personal reasons. Therefore, some will try performing evil acts to justify themselves. As a personal opinion, I feel if everyone was to perform good acts rather than evil acts, no one would have to try to fit in and make themselves something. Everyone would be equally unique and themselves rather than being someone they are not. People try to be better than another person and that is what causes evil acts to occur. Yes, I know this will never happen because this world is full of sin and sorrow and that is how the world was meant to be. But, of the seven deadly sins, we almost perform them daily. I wish that we could all just be equal and not compete with one another. If one of my friends were to perform an evil act that could not be justified, I would be the first one to say

Throughout history, good and evil have been a constant topic of discussion. Whether we are talking about terrorists, natural disasters, or simply your older brother breaking your toy, good and evil surround us. While opinions differ about the nature of good and evil, the tension remains the same. Outcomes are created, whether positive or negative. However horrible an event is, we seem to make light of it. We seem to be able to find the needle of good in the haystack of evil of life. But what is evil…

Firstly, we must understand what is meant by ‘good’ well good is that which is morally right. With God it is said in the bible “oh give thanks to the lord, for he is good; for His loving-kindness is everlasting (Psalms), another way is the 10 commandments which shows God setting the standard of what is morally right and wrong. Another way of showing of how ‘God is good’ is by creation in genesis 1 and 2 which shows God either creating the world or how he is crafting everything, also in the bible of how God has preformed miracles and in todays society.…

Evilness by definition is wrongdoing described as being harmful, cruel, immoral, crime, and much more, so the question then remains as to how something evil it can also be good. Lautreamont constantly reflects on the idea that the morality of evil and how that can lead to suffering is both subjective and objective, which is ambiguous. What is considered a morally wrong action or value may to another be accepted or appreciated. In fact, it appears to be more of a matter of perspective on how the evilness is causing suffering or a relief from suffering to each individual involved. For instance, Maldoror could be considered evil when he decides to kill the worm that preaches about the morality of killing Prostitution, but at the same time…

There are many answers from many different sources for what “the good” actually is. I will be discussing a few theories that I feel have some key concepts which point to what the good ultimately is: egoism, utilitarianism, and deontology. Egoism values the desires of the individual the most, and this is most important to the individual. Utilitarianism, on the other hand, needs to be impartial in order to value each individual’s happiness equally. Deontology also conflicts with both of these other theories because it is not consequentialist like utilitarianism, and does not always benefit the individual or anyone else involved. The best solution for the conflicts between these three theories is to break them down and build a theory that can…

What is real true and good

The perception of good is varied through what way someone is looking at it. Whether it be someones behavior, the feeling, or to do good it all represents something positive. As a child, being told to be good was a reflection on my behavior. Good behavior in my family as a child was always important. When visiting a family or a friends house, good behavior from me was always expected by my mother. Good behavior was to be mannerly, and to not disturb dinner. Bad behavior was immensely frowned upon in my family and brought multiple consequences. Very often when I was younger being told I was a good listener was a reflection not only on my behavior, but a reflection on the positive way I followed directions. To feel good is a very positive feeling. Good is a feeling that is achieved through various things like: reaching a personal goal, making others happy, or receiving positive news. Also, to feel good may be brought on from doing good. To do good is to be selfless in a way that you do acts of kindness in order to help others. To reach the warm and positive feeling of selflessness, many will…

In life there are both good and bad people, depending upon the choice they make. What actually makes a person good or bad? Is it there intentions to do bad things or is it sometimes a mistake to be bad? Being bad and having the knowledge of doing bad things means you’re clearly a bad person and choose that path. Accidentally making a bad choice, falls in the same category because when you choose to do that bad thing you were taking the risk to be good or bad, bad just ended up winning in the end.…

Evil is both bad and harmful. In the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, there is actually a distinction between bad evil and harmful evil. Bad evil is moral evil. Biblically, moral evil is disobedience towards God. Specifically, an instance of moral evil is when Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden. A contemporary instance of moral evil is humanity defying God’s statutes by lying, murdering, or hating. The majority of humanity acknowledges immoral acts (e.g., rape and dishonesty) as evil, although they may not acknowledge disobedience towards God as the definition of moral evil (i.e., there are people who define moral evil as whatever that destroys society). On the other hand, harmful evil is natural evil. Examples of natural…

The objectivist point of view is naturalism i.e. (what moral law predictates, usually from the natural law). In defining the word ‘good’, G.E. Moore attacks the objectivist point of view. He criticizes the naturalistic point of view. Moore, an intuitionist (meaning he is someone who decides if something is good or wrong by reflecting on his own, without anyone explaining to him) disagreed that good could be explained objectively. Moore criticised Utilitiarians as they were emotivists, i.e. depending on feelings. Thus they defined ‘good’ according to feelings. So good = pleasure. Thus utilitarians do not judge whether an action is good or bad by the quality of the action but by the consequence of the effects. Moore also criticised Christian morality, because these reason an action is good because it pleases God. He said, something is not defined as good because it pleases someone else.…

According to the current definition from Webster, good is defined as morally excellent; virtuous; righteous; pious; where as evil is defined as morally wrong or bad; immoral; wicked. One could argue that good and evil according to modern definitions are based on morals and if so then what can possibly be perceived as a moral or immoral act? What other being has the right to tell another what may be morally correct when morals should lye within ones own self? For instance, most people in present day society could agree that cannibalism is immoral or is wrong however what about those few tribes, such as the Asmat, that still practice it today? Yes, to society as a whole it is wrong to kill and eat other humans but to this tribe it is perfectly acceptable to do so. Thusly, this proves that the perception of morals varies between individuals and therefore in return means that good and evil are different for everyone as well.…

The issue of good and evil is brought up in “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, when innocent boys find themselves on a deserted island attempting to create a society like ours. The actions of the boys were not a matter of being good or evil, but were actions for survival. A person’s environment does not draw him towards good or evil, nor is he or she born with it inside. Humans have instincts that are not affairs of good and evil, but of survival.…

So, back to the question if evil and goodness really exist. I believe that good and evil exist as concepts created by man. The reality of suffering is pretty simple. Things happen that we don’t like. Things that we believe aren’t the best things at the time they happen. Human suffering may be one of the greatest trial that tests our faith in God. The mystery is, why would God allow it? He allows it so we grow from that experience. I believe the concepts of good and evil are a feigned dichotomy. That there is an atrocious artificiality of behind assigning such superficial titles to things.…
