Goal Statement

My goal as an educator is to receive a Master of Science in Education with a Concentration in Inclusion Education. Even though I do not hold an undergraduate degree in Education, this is where my life path has taken me. Being an educator without an education degree has taught me how to help students learn by thinking outside the box. I currently have a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Communication. I am an Instructor. I am knowledgeable in areas of training using effective communication skills. I am able to explain to others the process and steps it takes to produce a positive outcome.
I am entering my 9th year as a GED (General Education Diploma) Instructor. My students range from ages 16 to last year we had a very proud graduate that was 79. Each of these students carries with them a personal story/struggle/learning disability that somehow kept them from graduating high school. This is where I come in. I am not only their teacher; I’m their support, their mentor, their cheerleader, their “MOM”. For some reason or another, the traditional high school setting did not work for these students. Our nation has always put a negative spin on “dropouts” or even “GED”. However, it is ludicrous to believe that one system of doing something is going to satisfy the masses. Not everyone learns the same. When a student enrolls they carry this stigma with them that gives them a learning hindrance. Their image of being unintelligent hinders their learning. As an educator, it is my job to build self-esteem, help them stay motivated, and encourage educational growth. All of this in a nutshell describes my philosophy of education. I often reiterate to students, “Build upon your strengths and do not stress about your weaknesses.” Our students’ goal is not to pass with a score of perfection, simply just to pass. For example: if frustration with fractions is

In the article The Right to Fail, William Zinsser believes that the word dropout should not always have negative connotations. Persons who are under a certain age and leave school, or drop out, are often considered failures by societies set standards. Zinsser believes these standards set by society makes failing an almost unspeakable act and that the media, through advertisements and commercials, shows successful people living an American dream, filled with happiness, not the failure associated with dropouts.…

With the college drop out rate being almost 50%, it is clear to say that the structure of our educational system does a very poor job of functioning with students. We all have different personalities as well as ways of learning and interacting with others, however society still makes it mandatory for students to go to school. In today’s society most companies will not even look at your resume if you do not have some type of degree or diploma that states that you attended some type of school and therefore are considered educated. This is unfair to other people who have the experience they need and the knowledge of the field but their only problem is that they do not have a paper or “diploma” that states…

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” this is an inspirational quote by Winston Churchill, which can lead as an example to all the students in the United States that have dropped out of high school. According to dosomething.org, the U.S, which had some of the highest graduation rates of any developed country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries. Stress, low self-esteem, and poor support from family members are all responsible for leading students to dropping out of high school. However, the United States have been improving in that area and they’ve been efficiently, increasing the number of students that earn a high school diploma. Ultimately, the amount of students that have dropped…

Statistics shows total number of high school drop outs annually is 3,030,000. The numbers increase every year, especially for male students. Education is the future for today’s students, yet little take so seriously. For Edwin Rebollar, a 16 year old senior at Aldine high school, works very hard to make his education his first priority as well. In the year 2000, 10.9% of United States students between the ages of 16 and 24, were high school dropouts. My senior year of high school, I found out I was pregnant and decided to look for employment. I could not find a part-time job that would support my child and myself, so I decided that my only option was to drop out of high school to start working a fill-time job at minimum wage. As a high school drop out, my employment opportunities were very scarce in our small town. Before I dropped out, I was a good student who yearned to learn. I loved school and regretted dropping out . A year later, I decided to returned to high school to earn my diploma. I had high expectations and I did everything I could do so I could attend college. As a single parent, I still was not able to afford college, nor could I find the time to attend classes. A year had passed, and I married my high school sweetheart. He was in the military, and we were under the assumption that I could use his military college funding, but we were wrong.…

I define a dropout as someone who leaves school without a high school diploma or GED. Education is the key to a good life. A lot of teens use the GED as an excuse to drop out. They think that the test will be easy but in reality they don’t want to take the test and they end up not doing so. Believe it or not the GED is actually hurting the education system more than helping it. It was meant to help people get a degree equivalent to a high school graduate. But real it’s just taking student away from school. One method to cope with this problem is advancing the…

Growing up in Kansas, I was born and raised to be a Jayhawk. Visiting my sisters while they attended at the University of Kansas has always been some of the fondest memories I have and that’s why it was so easy to choose KU. Throughout the years I spent at KU, I have learned many life lessons that have prepared me for my future in education. While attaining my undergraduate degree I was president of my sorority. This experience allowed me to grow in a leadership position and manage an entire chapter locally and nationally. Once I realized the potential I had, I branched out and became a member of the Kansas Council of Social Studies. This educational organization focuses on the promotion of social studies and professional development for future educators. I am currently the president of KUCSS and we have been selected to present two of our notable achievements at the National Council for Social Studies Convention at the end of November to hundreds of social studies teachers across America.…
