GMOs in Our Food

I never paid much attention to all the controversy going viral about GMOs until I started reading articles about this. America has brought forth the attention of eating healthy and staying fit in order to live a longer, healthier life. However, in order to do so, we need to know what we are putting into our bodies. GMOS stand for genetically modified organisms.
What are these and are they safe to consume? Why doesn 't the United States label these
GMOs in our food products?

GMOs stand for “genetically modified organisms”(Lallanilla). They are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals to have certain traits of one subject injected into another. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce all insecticide (Biotech). Ever see an abnormally large fruit? That could most likely be the by-product of a certain gene that was inserted into the fruit in order to produce more product. Another GMO test was done on tomatoes. They were injected with antifreeze genes from a winter flounder fish, in hopes to produce tomatoes that could survive in extreme frosty weather (Lallanilla). This, fortunately, was never introduced and put forth onto the market. Although there is an abundance of trials and errors in genetically engineered material, about 90% of the main agricultural crops in the U.S. have been produced in this way.

Who makes these products and genetically modifies our crops and seeds? They are called the The Monsanto Company. The Monsanto Company is a publicly traded American multi -national chemical, and agriculture biotechnology corporation located in Creve Coear, Missouri. They are a leading producer of genectically

Most Americans are unaware to who Monsanto is and or what Genetically Modified Organisms are, even though they support and eat them nearly every meal. On Saturday, May 25, 2013 I attended the March Against Monsanto that took place in Downtown LA with about 5,000 other supporters, protesting against Monsanto and making strangers aware of what’s currently happening with the future of our food system. This march took place in over 150 cities in 55 countries across the globe and still didn’t make the mainstream media. Less than five percent of people know anything about what they’re really eating, and if they do, they’re more concerned about carbs, sugars and calories rather than where the food actually came from. Monsanto is the world’s largest Biotech and Agrochemical Corporation that specializes in manufacturing products including herbicides, pesticides and patented crop seeds. They have convinced most of humanity, that through innovative science, they’re producing high quality products that are beneficial for the customers and the environment. They also claim that they are committed to safety and health in everything they do, but a lack of government-lead scientific research has…

Monsanto is the most well-known and popular example of this, as it is a pioneer in the movement of GMO. Monsanto is a chemical company that has branched out into an agricultural biotechnology corporation that purchased seed companies. It is currently the leader in seed sales. (Wald 2013). Although other chemical/seed hybrid companies exist, Monsanto is the most common household name in the market.…

A topic of controversy in the past couple of years has been genetically modified organisms or GMOs for short. Many people disagree on whether or not GMOs benefit or threatens society and whether or not they are actually harmful to the human body. In this essay, I will delve into the both sides of the argument as well as what exactly GMOs are.…

I was born and raised in a small rural town in western Kansas. I have learned hardworking values growing up on a farm. My family relies on farming and ranching as a way of life. So, when I hear people talking about how GMO’s are bad for people’s health and our environment, it makes me feel concerned about the information people are receiving. GMO’s don’t affect the health of people or the environment at all. Instead they help to improve crop yields by modifying the seeds according to where a person lives by being drought resistant or bug resistant for example. This helps farmers and ranchers such as my family to make more profit from a higher yield. This results in more food produced which can help in a world with an ever-growing population.…

There is a world food crisis. Currently 790 million people are undernourished and around one third of the world’s children go to bed hungry. But their lack of food security is primarily caused by low incomes and unequal access to land, water, credit, and markets.1 There is no crisis of world food production on the horizon, despite environmental problems and a growing world population. Hunger will only be eliminated if governments and international organisations such as the World Trade Organisation implement substantial policy changes in favour of resource redistribution, poverty reduction, and food security. Technological fixes alone, such as genetically modified (GM) crops, cannot solve this problem, despite the claims which have been made for them. 2 The impact of GM crops for people in poverty, particularly in developing countries, could be negative. GM crops and related technologies are likely to consolidate control over agriculture by large producers and agro-industrial companies, to the detriment of smaller farmers. Leaving aside risk factors, GM crops could be of some benefit to poor farmers in the longer term if applications are directed to their needs and if intellectual property rules do not channel all the gains to companies. These conditions do not apply at present and require government action. There may be gains to low-income consumers flowing from reduced crop prices, if there are not effective monopolies in the supply chain. On the health and environmental side, we believe there is not yet sufficient scientific evidence to allow the commercial production of GM crops and that the ‘precautionary principle’ should be adopted.3 Regulation and monitoring in…

What is a GMO? GMO stands for genetically modified organism. It can be argued that genetically modified organisms have been around as long as humans were using agriculture as a food source. By definition, an organism that has been changed genetically by any source that does not occur naturally is a GMO. Any farmer could cross two plants to create a more beneficial crop. Since their creation, GMOs have been used for scientific research and midicinal purposes.…

Genetically modified plants and animals are changing our world in ways that are becoming too vividly discernable. Its techniques have been utilized in several fields including agriculture, medicine, enhancement in humans, and so on. Enzymes used in laundry detergent and medicines, such as human growth hormones and insulin are manufactured in genetically modified cells. Since the first genetically engineered crops were approved for entry into the market in 1987, their use has become widespread by farmers in the U.S. However, hunger still persists. “Biotechnology is one of tomorrow’s tools in our hands today. Slowing its acceptance is a luxury our hungry world cannot afford.” (Robbins, 2002) While there are some benefits to biotechnology, there are also its controversial counterparts. Creations such as herbicide resistant crops, fast-growing animals and humans who are immune to disease are without-say, useful handiworks except, who knows just what complications may arise? When a vector (used to replace human defective genes with functional copies) is inserted inside the human body, it is altered so it does not cause…
