Gmo's Are A Grand Experience On Health, Environment By Katherine Tallmadge
There have been many questions by consumers ever since GMO’s or genetically modified organisms started being produced by farmers. The consumers want to know if GMO’s are safe for them to consume. Katherine Tallmadge an author of LiveScience tells us GMO’s have sparked a heated debate on the impact they have on health and the environment. She warns us that GMO foods could possibly be harmful to consumers, unlike conventional farm foods that have not been modified.
Tallmadge’s article “GMO’s Are a Grand experience on Health, Environment” primarily uses Ethos to show her credibility and expertise on GMO’s, along with points of logos to prove how GMO’s can be harmful for humans to consume.

She starts by identifying herself as a writer for livescience and is a registered dietitian. By letting us know she works for livescience we know she looks at the science behind GMO’s to prove points and not just her opinion. Since she is a scientist this helps her target audience the consumers to realize that she has studied and done research on GMO’s to prove they can be harmful for humans and the environment. This is very crucial because she has gained peoples trust by being a scientist and doing the research so she can protect the consumers from the health issues she has found liked to GMO’s. She knows that consumers value safe products to consume and that is why she is warning people that their health could be affected by GMO’s. Tallmadge also has been on CNN and has spoken out against restaurants and food companies. She has informed consumers that restaurants and food companies use GMO’s even though they don’t disclose it. One example of this is the fast-food restaurant Chipotle. Chipotle had a reputation for using environmentally friendly ingredients. Many people ate there with the belief they were being served environmentally friendly ingredients. Later Chipotle disclosed that it used genetically modified soybean oil along with other genetically modified ingredients. Yonkers says, “We should be using the precautionary principle with GMO’s, and assume that GMO’s have to be demonstrated to be good rather than assume that they are good.” This says that someone who is very involved in agriculture is saying we need to be careful when using GMO’s. Since Yonkers is the co-director of Fresh Farm Markets she is very involved with the field of agriculture and the process that food goes through to be produced and is considered an expert. Since she is an expert in the production of food she knows what food is safe and what food isn’t. This strengthens Tallmadge’s argument about health concerns in GMO’s, because we (the consumers) are being told to be careful when consuming genetically modified food since we don’t know if they are harmful to us. Yonkers also refers to GMO’s as a “grand experiment” in the American food supply. This should make her target audience the consumers skeptical of GMO’s especially if an expert in farm foods is calling this an experiment. This proves Tallmadge’s point on how GMO’s have not been proven safe even according to an expert in the field of agriculture who studies Fresh Markets of food.     Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US).     And not only has the research on GE foods failed to show they’re safe it as actually confirmed that they should be off the market. Which is better explained in chapter 10 of this novel, For example, the first commercially grown genetically engineered food to be granted a license to get onto the American market was the Flavr Savr tomato which was developed by Calgene in 1992 which aimed to keep the tomato after it was picked to stay firm throughout the shipping process. And at that time, the FDA thought it would help the image of GE foods if they did a few tests to check their safety. However, on two of the three major tests done on rats with the Flavr Savr tomato turned out to be bad news for the company as close to 20% of the rats developed gross lesions in their stomachs. But in the third test some rats which were not fed the Flavr Savr also developed lesions which Calgene thought was encouraging enough to were the FDA would agree the tomato was safe. Which was not the case as many scientists were not won over. However, just like the FDA did in 1992 to issue a statement that clashed with its experts to declare that GE foods can be presumed safe it twisted the information again but in this case it declared that the first bioengineering whole food had actually been proven safe. Not only was it clear that many experts did not agree with the tomato being regarded as safe, and therefore it could not be Generally recognized as safe (GRAS) the tomato was associated with outcomes more severe that lesions as 7 out of 20 rats that ate the GE tomato died within 2 weeks.
