GMO OMG
Scientific Research
The first technique used in the documentary, GMO OMG by Jeremy Seifert, that I found very effective was the use of scientific research. This research helps to persuade the people watching the documentary that GMO’s are indeed harmful toward our healths. Jeremy interviewed a scientist named Gilles Eric Seralini who was a professor of molecular biology. He conducted a research on Monsanto’s 603 GMO corn to see the health effects caused by it. Seralini conducted his research in order to find out whether or not it would have a negative impact on the rat. Effects from the GMO’s were shown quite quickly after a couple of months as the rats had severe tumours in their livers and kidneys. Moreover, when the research of Seralini was out he was broadly criticized and numerous scientists stated that he was a fraud. The only other study that had been conducted was by Monsanto itself and even though the same type of rat was used, Monsanto resulted in opposite results to that of Seralini. They concluded that the GMO was completely safe. This was also a useful technique to use as it raised suspicion and doubt in the research of Monsanto because as no company would say anything negative about their own product in their results, Seralini’s results were more trustable. Moreover, this technique helped the viewers to be aware that the foods they are eating can cause potential harmful effects to them such as tumours.
Rejection
The next technique that I found effective was all the times Jeremy tried to obtain information from Monsanto and other GMO using companies by various means. Firstly, he tried to contact Monsanto by calling and arranging an interview with them. He was kept on being transferred to different people and in the end he received no clear Jeremy was infuriated and decided to go to the building of Monsanto. When he entered the building, he asked the receptionist if he may talk to someone in authority of the business. He was then handed over the phone

Most Americans are unaware to who Monsanto is and or what Genetically Modified Organisms are, even though they support and eat them nearly every meal. On Saturday, May 25, 2013 I attended the March Against Monsanto that took place in Downtown LA with about 5,000 other supporters, protesting against Monsanto and making strangers aware of what’s currently happening with the future of our food system. This march took place in over 150 cities in 55 countries across the globe and still didn’t make the mainstream media. Less than five percent of people know anything about what they’re really eating, and if they do, they’re more concerned about carbs, sugars and calories rather than where the food actually came from. Monsanto is the world’s largest Biotech and Agrochemical Corporation that specializes in manufacturing products including herbicides, pesticides and patented crop seeds. They have convinced most of humanity, that through innovative science, they’re producing high quality products that are beneficial for the customers and the environment. They also claim that they are committed to safety and health in everything they do, but a lack of government-lead scientific research has…

Vice’s article titled “GMOs Aren’t That Bad but Monsanto is Worse” rhetorically argues that Monsanto, a horrible agricultural-biotechnology corporation, is improper engineering and is pushing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on North America. Vice’s key point is that not only does Monsanto engineer and push unhealthy, hazardous inorganic seeds and foods on consumers, but manipulatively takes advantage of the market. The use of pictures, links to more information, and conversational language is what makes this article convincing and reasonable yet compelling and concerning.…

Do people ever truly know what is in their food? When they pop those irresistible fries into their mouths, are they really just eating a potato? According to researchers at Rutgers University, one in four people do not know that most of the food they consume is genetically modified (Hallman). “Genetic modification is the process of forcing genes from one species into another entirely unrelated species” (“GMO Defined”). Although some find genetically modified organisms to be beneficial to society, such designs are harmful to the human body and deficient to farmers.…

There is a corporation called Monsanto that owns patents of many GMO seeds in the US. They claim that there foods are harmless and point to studies- many of which the company itself has conducted- demonstrating the safety of the products produced (Monsanto.com, 2015). These studies however have been widely critiqued for obvious bias, and I agree with those assessments. The Monsanto studies only prove that data can be manipulated, not that the products are safe. So, without high quality, objective information, the debate quickly turns into a he said/ she said…

When one tries to prove that GMOs are safe, the other does the same to prove the contrary. However, there is one point that both side agree on and that is that GMOs are already on the American market. Starting from that point we can make our own observations. For instance, if it is true that we have been eating GMOs for the past years then surely we will have been affected by its health risks if there are such risks. The problem is that there has been no symptoms of any sort for the last few years neither for me or anyone in my environment just like was observed by the scientists of the National Academies of Sciences, Mechanics and Medicine (“The Verdict on GMO…” 71). Now I do not claim that GMOs can save us from world hunger, but one thing is sure, they are not dangerous for our health. I do not agree with everything said by the GMOs activists, but I tend to believe them more because the basis of the argument, the safety of GMOs, is most likely to be true. I also tend to believe them more after Lynas’ interview for he witnessed the views of both sides making him, more or less an objective source, and sided with the GMOs activists (“GMOS: A Solution or…” 131-132). Thus, I find myself adopting, the pro-GMOs position for I cannot see any dangers in…

I was born and raised in a small rural town in western Kansas. I have learned hardworking values growing up on a farm. My family relies on farming and ranching as a way of life. So, when I hear people talking about how GMO’s are bad for people’s health and our environment, it makes me feel concerned about the information people are receiving. GMO’s don’t affect the health of people or the environment at all. Instead they help to improve crop yields by modifying the seeds according to where a person lives by being drought resistant or bug resistant for example. This helps farmers and ranchers such as my family to make more profit from a higher yield. This results in more food produced which can help in a world with an ever-growing population.…

Currently in our country, there are endless amounts of issues surrounding the debate between organic and conventional foods. Organic and conventional foods differ in many ways; the substance, cost, appearance, health benefits and government interaction of these two types of foods differ from one another greatly, but also are considered extremely similar in the eyes of the average American consumer. Is organic food healthier for the human body? What is the actual difference between the two? Is organic food worth the cost? These are all questions American consumers are asking. In this essay, the similarities and differences of organic and non-organic food will be looked at in detail.…

How would you feel if I told you that the food you're eating was made in a science lab? Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are the outcome of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially manipulated into the genes of an uncorrelated plant or animal. Crops are often genetically modified to be resistant to pesticides so farmers would be able to spray them without harming the crop itself. However, there are many consequences regarding consumers’ health and environmental problems. Many people question the safety of consuming genetically modified organisms. Companies should acknowledge that their product is genetically modified by placing a label on the product because customers have a right to know. Furthermore, there are several serious health complications that may rise to the consumer. And finally, genetically modifying organisms should be limited by being placed in a controlled environment to prevent contamination with other species because it can be harmful to the environment in several ways.…

Genetic engineering is an artificial breeding technique by modifying the genetic codes of organisms (Patrick Dixon 2011). Part of the society is proud of this advanced technology; however, as regards to its negative impacts, it gives rise to numerous scandals. Farid E. Ahmed (2002, 215) also alleged that, consumer distrust occasioning from former foods and environmental anxieties, apparent monitoring omission and uncertainty in government administrations, all influences which driven arguments about the environmental and public health safety issues, e.g. latent gene flow to…

The documentary that I watched is called Seeds of Death Unveiling the Lies of GMO. I found this documentary to be very interesting because it tells you about genetically modified organisms and the damages it can do to humans, animals and our environment. This documentary tells you that the companies that produce the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are more interested in making money than worrying about the consequences of it making humans sick, killing animals, insects and how it is destroy the environment. The documentary states that we are heading downhill at a rapid pace toward our own extinction. The documentary goes on to state that the lack of research on the effects of genetically modified foods is unsafe and should not be sold in stores. The documentary focuses on the fact that when pesticides are sprayed on the genetically modified crops that it does not kill the crops but kills the insects and weeds around…
