Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’S) Genetically modified organisms are living things that have had artificial changes in the genes of their DNA. Most of the time these changes are things that could never occur naturally, which is what makes it so unnatural and unusual. To genetically engineer food, it involves the insertion of genes from a living thing (such as plants, insects, animals, or humans) to create something new and unique. Almost all genetically engineered foods are not labeled, so most people don’t even know when they’re consuming them. I don’t know about you, but it sounds like a well-plotted scheme to me… Not only are GMO’S something I (along with many others) don’t agree with, but they’re also causing a variety of problems. The main thing for me is the environmental problems; when a GMO escapes into the wild, the ecosystem in which they’re living in is disrupted by the unnatural occurrences in these organisms. “For example, the most recent conservative scientific estimates indicate that genetically engineered plants will probably cross-pollinate with wild relatives, thereby escaping into the wild and permanently disrupting ecosystems at about one percent a year.” (Jack London Workshop) Not only are there environmental problems, but there are ethical problems as well. Genetically modified organisms are going against what many people believe, not only scientifically but religiously as well, just for the profit of these big businesses. On the other hand, there are also a great deal of people who think that genetically modified foods are “nothing new”, and that “our foods have been unnatural for a long time”. It is true that organisms have been modified for centuries. There were much simpler forms of genetic modification done by our ancestors; they simply chose a few plants, and gradually modified them by choosing the ones that were the largest, and best tasting.
