Case 1.
Southwestern university
Southwestern university (SWU), a large state college in Stephenville, Texas, 30 miles southwest of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, enrolls close to 20,000 students. In a typical town-gown relationship, the school is a dominant force in the small city, with more students during fall and spring than permanent residents. A longtime football powerhouse, SWU is a member of the Big Eleven conference and is usually in the top 20 in college football rankings. To bolster its chances of reaching the elusive and long-desired number-one ranking, in 2003, SWU hired the legendary Bo Pitterno as its head coach. One of Pitterno’s demands on joining SWU had been a new stadium. With attendance increasing, SWU administrators began to face the issue head-on. After 6 months of study, much political arm wrestling, and some serious financial analysis, Dr. Joel Wisner, president of Southwestern University, had reached a decision to expand the capacity at its on-campus stadium. Adding thousands of seats, including dozens of luxury skyboxes, would not please everyone. The influential Pitterno had argued the need for a first-class stadium, one with built-in dormitory rooms for his players and palatial office appropriate for the coach of a future NCAA champion team. But the decision was made, and everyone, including the coach, would learn to live with it. The job now was to get construction going immediately after the 2009 season ended. This would allow exactly 270 days until the 2010 season opening game. The contractor, Hill Construction, signed his contract. Bob Hill looked at the tasks his engineers had outlined and looked President Wisner in the eye. “I guarantee the team will be able to take the field on schedule next year,” he said with a sense of confidence. “I sure hope so,” replied Wisner. “The contract penalty of $10,000 per day for running late is nothing compared to what Coach Pitterno will do to you if our opening game with Penn State is

In 1987 the National Collegiate Athletic Association (N.C.A.A.) placed its harshest football punishment in history on Southern Methodist University (S.M.U.). The repeat violator rule, also known as the “death penalty,” banned the college from playing football for all of the 1987 and only allowed to play seven games in its 1988 season. They used S.M.U. as an example of what could happen when a college excessively violates N.C.A.A. regulations. The death penalty was the last option for the university because they were already on probation for past major violations with N.C.A.A. ("SMU Football Gets," 1987, p. 1C). The only thing left of S.M.U. after receiving ‘death’ was pick up the pieces and they are still trying to put the sport back together after so many years.…

The Southern Methodist football team deserved the death penalty because of their athletic booster’s use of bribery to recruit the best players in the nation. Southern Methodist University, a private university located in Dallas, Texas, is not one that many people hear of. Despite being located in a big town with a boom in economy, SMU was a long shot from being the conference champion. They needed someone to bring them back from a shadow of tough losses during the 1960s and 1970s, not to mention the competition they had to face while being in the…

Corruption, scandals, suspensions, firings and a systems that is systematically flawed all the while the fact of the matter is that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a organization that is bringing in billions of dollars each year yet the labor force generating the money gets a scholarship that many athletes believe doesn’t pay enough for everything that is needed on campus so this leads the author to have to take a look at if athletes need to be paid. I will outline numerous problems that are going on in college athletics and possible solutions to problems. I will take a look at the scholarship itself to determine if that is sufficient enough for campus life. The bottom line is from the outside looking in is that there is a lot money going into the hands of administrators and coach’s with none going into the people shedding the blood sweat and tears. It would seem that the system in place at times, wants to make the student athlete stand around with their hands out accepting all and any money that they can find from an outside source, which is in violation of NCAA bylaws concerning amateur sports.…

The competitive advantage of the College Football Hall of Fame has the potential to be very strong. What makes the CFHOF hard to duplicate is that it offers a hands-on, personalized, customer experience that is driven by technology. The CFHOF also has an ideal sized facility, which allows for the technology-driven attraction to get a good value for the cost of operations. An attraction that is too big might find it too expensive to depend so heavily on similar technology, while a facility too small might view the cost to be too expensive to depend so heavily on technology, in addition to the fact that the hospitality/entertainment attractions rely on the unpredictable human factor to generate revenue.…

Constructed in 1992, the United Center was built to replace its once longstanding predecessor, Chicago Stadium, a structure that previously sat on virtually the same footprint for sixty-five years. Since the United Center opened in 1994, the stadium has come to be identified as a major anchor for Chicago’s Near West Side Community, and has become a source for major tourist attraction.…

This article was very interesting. It really applies to my honors essay and was a great in-depth desciption into Football at Carlisle. During football documentaries, the early portion of football history always talks in great detail about the successes of Harvard and Yale, accounting their great rivalry and historical relevance. This article takes a different perspective focusing on the successes of the Carlisle football team. The article states, “By 1907, the Carlisle Indians were the most dynamic team in college football.” I found this quote to put in perspective the impact of football at Carlisle. The next sentence states that Carlisle started to incorporate the forward pass, the overhand spiral, and multiple trick plays. All to those aspects…
