Surprisingly enough, even though it comes from a comedian, this remark is not very far from the truth, as gluten has recently become the enemy of many in their quest for flat abdomens and purified bodies. This new trend has created a great increase in demand for gluten-free products which has come to benefit people who simply cannot eat gluten without endangering their health, such as coeliac disease patients. This article seeks to clarify some misconceptions surrounding this complicated story involving gluten, the fad diet market and people with gluten-related disorders.

Nevertheless, as trends come and go, so may we soon stop hearing about the gluten-free diet. Then is when it will become of utmost importance that people who used to advocate against gluten for all the wrong reasons start doing so for the health of a minority. Supporting research aiming to find cures for CD and other incurable gluten-related disorders as well as CD advocacy organizations is crucial to avoid returning to a time when sick people had to jump through many hoops just so they could find something they could eat. Until a cure is found, let us hope for that gluten-free muffin mix to remain in the main shelves of our grocery stores for many years to
