Glow Stick Lab
Glow Stick Lab – Informal
Hypothesis:
I believe the glow sticks will become ultimately brighter in the warmer temperature beaker as heat cause molecules and particles to move faster and rapidly thus producing energy where as when the glow stick is the cold temperature beaker I believe it will dim in light as energy id being taken away as particles are moving much slower and are closer to each other.
Materials:
* Hot plate * Two beakers (200mL) * Two glow sticks * Water * Thermometer * Beaker Tongs
Procedure:
1. Retrieve the materials needed to perform this experiment. 2. Take Beaker 1 and fill it ¾ full with refrigerated water (12 degrees Celsius). 3. Take Beaker 2 and fill it ¾ full with room temperature

Analyze and record in your observation chart to what happened to the glow sticks after they were put in the two different temperate waters.
Observations:
| Beaker 1 (cold) | Beaker 2 (hot) | Temperature (degrees Celsius) | 12 | 95 | Glow stick brightness before on scale of 1-10 | 7/10 – Bright | 7/10 – Bright | Glow stick brightness after on scale 1-10 | 4/10 – Dimmed | 10/10 – Very Bright |

Data Analysis: 1. Yes my prediction was correct as the glow stick has become intensely brighter when emitted into the hot temperature water while the other glow stick dimmed as it came in contact with the cold temperature water. This was due to the lack of energy being produced thus letting the glow stick particles to slow down. 2. When the glow stick was emitted into the warm water it became brighter as the light output increased. This is because to the increase of energy as heat produces light and energy. The energy allowed the glow stick particles to rapidly move and spread. 3. When the glow stick was emitted into the cold water it became dimmer as the light output decreased. This is because the cold water causes the glow stick particles to slow down thus causing the light to have a decrease in energy as energy is produced from

I think the change in brightness occurred because of the energy levels the temperatures produced. The heated water produced more light because heat results and creates light and energy. As well the heat caused the glow stick particles to move more rapidly which was as well due to the increase of energy. However I think the change in brightness in the other beaker was a result of loss of energy. By putting the glow stick into the cold water you are depriving it from heat, energy and light thus a decrease in the particle movements of the glow stick which results into dimness. When particles move slower this is a result of a loss of energy, in this scenario the loss of energy caused the glow stick to dim in

Light is usually viewed as a result of the heating of a substance. The higher the temperature at which the substance is heated, the greater the vibrations that lead to certain light intensity given off by the molecule. It is this same theory that suggests why steel glows red hot when heated to high enough temperatures. The process of light emissions can also be induces through other means. 1…

    Lab 20: Flame Tests

When atoms or ions in ground state are heated to a higher temperature, some electrons absorb enough energy to move them to higher energy levels. This is known as the excited state. However, the excited configuration is unstable, and the electrons must return back to their positions in the lower energy level. As they return, the energy that was previously absorbed is now emitted in the form of electromagnetic energy. This energy can be displayed in the form of visible light. The main purpose/objective of this lab was to observe the characteristic colors produced by certain metallic ions when they are vaporized in a flame. Another main objective of this lab was identifying the unknown metallic ions by means of flame tests. In this lab, this is what was supposed to be…

There were a numerous amount of observations and patterns in the data throughout the candle lab. The hypothesis was if the amount of candles inside the jar increases by an increment of one, then the weight of water in the jar will increase as well. The hypothesis was proven to be true, since for every candle added there was about 33 grams of water more. Every time the jar was placed over the candles, there would always be bubbles around the rim, also as more candles were used, the jar became cloudier and the bottom of the jar became more charred. The bottom of the jar also got hot, and after the jar was taken off the candles there would be grey smoke. The flame got larger as more candles were added, and the smell remained constant.…

As I can see through the graphs above the temperature decreases very slowly from the initial 70 degree starting temperature. What happens is that test tube one and two slowly start to disconnect form each other, seeing as test tube one retains heat more effectively. I will now see whether the results will be drastically different with my other experiments. I have also noticed that the test tube 1 has a greater heat retaining ability that may well be due to the layer of air held between it and the test tube. To further prove this theory I will have to continue with my other experiments.…

Although the light-producing reaction is not caused by heat and may not produce heat, the rate at which it occurs is affected by temperature. If you place a lightstick in a cold environment (like a freezer), then the chemical reaction will slow down. Less light will be released while the lightstick is cold, but the stick will last much longer. On the other hand, if you immerse a lightstick in hot water, the chemical reaction will speed up. The stick will glow much more brightly, but will wear out faster too.…

I believe that the flask filled with CO₂ will become hotter then the flask filled with air. The reason is because CO₂ is a greenhouse gas and therefore traps heat. This experiment was done to show the effect of greenhouse gases and prove that they contribute to the rise in temperature of the Earth. By comparing the room temperature air filled and CO2 filled flasks, I will be able to determine whether greenhouse gasses do or not effect global warming.…
