The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was a significant event because this was the first formal unit of the United State Army to be made up entirely of Black, or African American men. Over 180,000 African American men served in the Union army of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and were led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Another person that had influenced the blacks to join the union army was an ex-slave named Frederick Douglass. After Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation, many African American men had their hearts in the war against slavery which the Civil War had become of due to the Emancipation Proclamation. The film Glory, gives the audiences the chance to witness the close relationship between two very different men: Private Thomas Searles and Private Silas Trip. Searles and Trip started out as men from different lifestyles who have an aversion towards one another. Trip constantly mocked Thomas for being different compared to the other black man. Trip kept on bothering Searles because he was jealous of his lifestyle. Trip was surprised that Thomas talked "as good as a white folk” (Fields and Zwick 1989). Their relationship takes a substantial turn on the battlefield when Trip is about to be killed and Thomas bravely jumps in to saves him. They supported each other and ended up developing a brotherly bond through the movie. At the beginning of the movie “Glory” there is an obvious segregation between whites and blacks, captain Shaw seemed to be of the vast minority that treated African American’s with some sort of decency. Shaw was hard on his men but only because he wanted them to be great soldiers. The overall attitude towards African American’s is what you would expect from the time. Most white men look at themselves as far superior as the black men. Even though the African Americans have volunteered to risk their lives as soldiers, they still all feel basically as slaves and tread lightly around officers. The Glory Field is a story of a black family who was fighting for freedom and equality. The story starts with Mohammad Bilal who was the founder of the Lewis family. The eleven years old, Mohammad Bilal was captured in 1753 as a slave. Mohammad Bilal’s difficult journey started from the ship when they brought him from Sierra Leone to South Carolina. In 1864, Joshua and Lem who were the great grand children of Mohammad Bilal tried to run away from slave. However, Lem was caught and tied to a tree out in the woods. Joshua ran away. In the night when Lem was tied to a tree, thirty years old, Lizzy a wife of Lem’s brother, went to say something good to Lem and to give him a drink. When Lizzy was there with Lem, a white man, Mister Joe Haynes, caught her. But Joshua came and rescued both Lem and Lizzy. All three of them escaped and joined the army to fight for their freedom. In the war Lem died. His body was buried in the Glory Field. After the war, the Lewis family received the Glory Field as their own farm. In 1900, the Lewis family had struggled to pay their taxes. The fifty years old Elijah the sun of Lizzy, and hi cousin Abby got $35 by finding the little blind white boy David or the sun of Hamlin Turner by struggling the heavy storm. Elijah was forced to leave Curry because he tried to hit the white man Frank Patty with an oar. Frank Patty wanted to whip Elijah. Elijah went to Chicago where Joshua and Neela were living. In 1930, sixty years old Luvenia, the daughter of Elijah tried to go to The University of Chicago, but she was fired from her job, so she could not get the letter that would help her to get the loan from the bank. After that, she decided to start her own business and she succeeded in the business. In 1964 Johnson City, the sixty years old Thomas Lewis the grand sun of Abby was the first black who got a chance to join the local state collage. After graduating high school, I knew I had to make a decision to either go to community college or join The United States Army. I decided to diligently join the Army and make something of myself. I knew, coming from where I did, you either sink or swim. I refused to become another product of my environment. I left for training a week after I graduated high school. As an 18 year old, I did not know what to expect. I would train rigorously. Although I was always an athlete, I physically performed feats I never thought I could do. I felt mature not just physically but also mentally. When I joined the Army, it was not just about me finding a career; it was my transitionary stage into becoming a man. During the process of joining the Army, they give you many options and incentives for your career, if you score high on your assessment test. One of my options was to go to airborne school after I was finished with my initial training. But the only problem was my biggest fear was heights. When you are airborne in the Army you jump out of an airplane with a parachute on your back into combat. At first, I was excited beyond measure because becoming airborne in the army is a very distinctive honor. During airborne school, I went through a three week training process. It was very intense training and you learned to pay attention to everything the instructors were teaching. Because with one wrong move or slip up while jumping could cost your life or end up getting someone else hurt, which could be fatal. Luckily, I graduated airborne school and I ended up finishing my army career with over 34 jumps and two jumps were into combat.…
