Globalisation between the western and local perpective

Globalization is a process which allows countries on different continents to integrate and interconnect with each other. The onslaught of Globalization has taken the world today by storm, and can be seen everywhere. However, one must take into account that globalization can be seen as a double edged sword, bringing about both pros, and cons.
Firstly, Globalization brings about an increase in the competitiveness of the local workforce. The onset of globalization has allowed our local population to be more educated as it is regarded that a person with higher academic qualifications would equate to attaining a higher paying job. These has in turn brought about more competitiveness as people fight for higher paying jobs and constantly seek self-improvement and career advancements to improve their quality of life. The abovementioned view can be supported by the example of the developing country of Myanmar after its post military junta era. Myanmar has in recent times embraced globalization by the luring of MNCs into the country to develop the country. This can be seen in the example of hotel businesses from the west coming to Myanmar. Since the arrival of such MNCs in Myanmar, the local population has experienced an increase in the level of education for the younger generation. Myanmar then boasts a higher productive workforce, as well as a lucrative hotel business. The people of Myanmar today strive to study harder to attain higher academic qualifications, and henceforth improve their chances of securing a highly paying job.
In the westernized world, globalization allows countries there to have greater business opportunities as well as employment opportunities for the local workforce. With the inpouring of financial investments and funds to kick start work production and businesses, there is a greater opportunity for these countries to experience economic prosperity due to an increase in their output and ultimately their GDP. This can be seen as an example of the vacuum company Dyson in the UK. With its inception in 1993, Dyson has become a household name in household appliances. Due to its popularity worldwide, there has been a huge demand for its products from the UK. This has led to the UK having to supply more workers to produce products for Dyson. Alongside Dyson’s aggressive advocacy of globalization through the medium of advertising, means that more people in the UK get jobs through Dyson and hence the UK can also experience an increase in GDP as Dyson posted a company net revenue of 1 billion pounds alone.
On the other hand, globalization is not without its cons. Globalization can possibly harm the economy of developed nations as profit driven businesses would constantly seek to cut cost and hence cause unemployment in developed countries because firms move their factories to developing nations where they can get cheaper labor for a similar line of work. This can be seen in the United States as businesses move their factories and operations offshore to countries such as China to take advantage of the cheaper labor there. The USA would be affected and unemployment rates will increase. Another con seen in the local context would be exploitation of foreign impoverished workers in developing countries locally such as India and Vietnam. Globalization has led developing countries to shift their focus onto improving the economy and taking advantage of business interest and hence cause exploitation of their own people in becoming cheap labor for these MNCS. As there is a lack of protection from governments of the developing countries, powerful companies often exploit workers by paying them enough salary to hire them but making them endure extremely long hours under terrible working conditions. This can be seen in the example of Nike sweatshops present in India, where workers are forced to work hours on end without any rest and under dissatisfactory working conditions. The workers are free to leave their jobs, but in these poor countries, poverty has become such a huge fear and problem that the workers are left with no choice. There would also be an increase in exploitation of child labor as globalization increases and the demand of child labour may be needed to sustain the need for cheap labour in the country.
Last but not least, I feel that globalization has contributed a lot to the world today. It boosts countries economy, advances technologies and improves daily lives of the people. For me, the advantages of globalization outweigh its disadvantages. While there may be several disadvantages, these disadvantages are necessary to spearhead a country’s initial development and progress. Globalization has brought about such widespread improvements in the lives of people around the world, it can be seen in every niche and corner, and will continue to impact and improve the lives of people around the world.
