Giving Voice to Values
It is difficult to imagine a single sales employee standing up against an entire sales department in objection to falsifying sales dates in order to meet quarterly goals and to ensure bonuses, or a female receptionist standing up against her company’s CEO in order to protest against harassment in the workplace. No matter what an individual’s position is within a company, everyone will experience a time at some point in their career where they will be presented with an ethical dilemma and will be forced to make a decision with which they will have to live with the consequences. Giving Voice to Values does a great job recognizing these challenging decisions and recognizing there is a gap between our business ethics and our personal social responsibility that most individuals in today’s business world have a difficult time navigating. Generally, most individuals know what is right and what is wrong, or at least what they believe to be right and wrong. However, it is not always easy to say what we think or feel aloud, especially if we are fearful that the cost to speaking up will place ourselves, our department, or even our entire organization at risk. Values, Ethics and Sustainability has been very enlightening and has provided me with several tools that I will be able to refer back to in order to help guide me through future ethical dilemmas. First, in order to be able to voice your values, it is important to determine what your values are and where they come from. Our first two weeks of class discussion were very illuminating and provided may sources of ethical theories that helped get me started thinking about values and how individuals develop and determine their values. Similarly, Giving Voice to Values forced me to step back and think long and hard about what my personal values are, and how I can take those values and employ them in my future business endeavors.
