Give Something Back Analysis
Give Something Back

A couple of my friends have asked why I write so much. I guess they have seen some of my articles and do not understand why I keep writing. I told them I was trying to give something back to the clowning industry. As you might suspect they did not understand and asked what I meant.

I feel that we all share a responsibility of giving something back to clowning. If you are like me someone was there when you reached out for help. For me it was a close friend who selected me to mentor. He helped me with makeup, costume and got me started with my clowning.

I also met a few others who helped me learn more balloons and magic. Then I took an interest in skits. Talk about launching someone into a land of fun and excitement.

I finally produced my own clown show complete with music, choreography and bigger clown illusions. All the while I touched based with all kinds of support sources. But I never forgot the very first person that helped me.

It was not long after I got started that I began to share some of my skills with other clowns. I made it a point to attend seminars and conventions. It didn’t matter if I already knew the material. I was anxious to hear another clown’s presentation. There wasn’t a single duplicated class that I attended where I didn’t learn something new.

As I approached retirement age I began writing. Most of my books are available through a magic site as they deal with magicians. I do have a few works that relate to clowning. And, I was invited to present my “Sponge Magic” lecture for the Korn Patch Klowns in Des Moines Iowa. I can still hear some of the comments. One stands out in my mind.

This lady didn’t feel she could work with sponge balls. She told me her hands were too small. But during my presentation she began to use them. And, I could see her face light up as she started to realize she could start using sponge with her clowning. Her comments, along with others I have received by email remind me that I am working the “give back”

In the film, Do the Right Thing, Rosie Perez (Tina), became a well-known figure in one of the greatest films of all time. She played Mookie’s (Spike Lee) ostentatious girlfriend. Tina’s character allowed viewers' reactions to the issues of classism. Many were offended claiming that this is not a positive representation of who Latinos and African Americans. I would conclude that Spike Lee believed that any classist or racist response would only come from White people, but it didn’t.…

Joe, a seven year old boy, was very excited to go see his first clown with his family. He experienced his first clown when he went to the circus. He went to the Ringling Bros Circus and met a Whiteface clown. Joe later found out that the Whiteface clown was not the only type. In addition to the Whiteface clown, Joe soon discovered that there are more kinds of clowns: the “Auguste” clown as well as “character” clowns, which are all very different in appearance and character (All About Clowns, “Types”).…

Since then, I have been taught by several mentors, who are artists themselves. Presenting my art in three shows has compelled me to openly speak about my art. I have learned substantially. The environment that surrounds the Kent Bellows program is reassuring, warm, and welcoming. Consequently, through exposing me to people, places, opportunities, and resources my well being and attitudes improved substantially. The entire process boosted my self-esteem and helped me gain a better understanding of who I am. This program triggered the realization I did have talent. I was, and am not, painfully mediocre.…

After reading the "Do it Better" handout in class my views on how anyone can improve in school and life have changed drastically. With my experiences in life my mindset in how important school education is changed how I view learning. Getting an education to me is very important because I think people who are educated do better in life and are more wealthy. Some people need someone or something to help them build confidence in many aspects of life. For example, when I was in high school my parents reminded me that getting a high school diploma is very important and I was determined to graduate. Many things can make an impact on how your life can…

After watching the film, Do The Right Thing, it should be included in the syllabus for this class Nationality, Race and Ethnicity because of the fact diversity is shown in cultural differences, assimilation, and is applied to all the qualities that make everyoney in the neighborhood different. Once, a girl came in and I started talking with her; she had an ASL background and knew enough signs to make conversation. We simply talked the entire time and got to know each other. I learned that she was hard of hearing, but no one focused on her enough to give her the care she needed. She struggles to keep up in school because she cannot hear, no assistance provided. Asking for someone to repeat something frustrates her to no end because people will shrug her aside, telling her "never mind". That day I was able to sit and listen to her for two hours. For that girl, I made her feel important and I hope to continue to invest in her life. In that moment, sitting there listening to this young girl who feels unimportant or even worthless, I knew every moment afterwards I would empathize with other individuals so that one day I can reveal to them the reason why they have worth, even if it seems unrecognizable to…

One year during track season, three girls, inexperienced, decided they wanted to join track. Obviously, the coaches showed them how to do everything and trained them but they still did not catch on and that is where I came in. The girls were having trouble with triple jump and honestly, it is pretty tough. During the practices I would pull the off, one on one, and show they how to start off and run from one foot and land one the other as you jump from that one to end up jumping again and landing in the sand pit with both feet. After a few practices and multiple run throughs, they finally got it down pat and thanked me for the extra work I put in for them. It felt great to help someone in need out and made me feel like a better…

Throughout my life I have been involved with the community from soup kitchens, motivational groups and other areas that I have found needed to be a part of in my life. Civil rights, social actions, welfare and social services have been a motivation for both my lifestyle and my involvement because without people actively participating in these areas people that need service would be left with minimal to little resources. I find joy in working with others and being able to better understand the backgrounds that others come from to enable me to be a person people can come to for help without feeling distance or discomfort. Giving back to the community has proved to give me a feeling of purpose and worth, I show my gratitude to by becoming involved…

In 4th grade I was invited to see a friend of mine in the stage production of "Charolette's Web." I was entranced by what was happening in front of me. Real life people on a stage with a crowd people watching. The theatre I saw the production at was called Spotlight Theatre and every time Spotlight did a performance, they gave away a cookie cake to one of the audience members. As luck would have it, I was the winner that day. I was asked to come up to the stage and receive my cake from some of the cast members. As I received the cake and looked out upon the crowd filled with lit up faces, I realized that this was where I belonged. I felt energized and happy unlike anything I had ever felt before. Later that year I would see myself audition…

From time to time people express amazement at how I can get so much done. I, of course, aware of the many hours I have idled away doing nothing, demur. I came to realize that I can make a difference when I helped a student in elementary school. This happened when I was 12 years old and still a student. It was during lunch break, some students were walking, others having their lunch. I was walking to the washroom and saw a group of students in the corridor talking loudly to another student; I was under the impression that they were friends but later understood that he was being bullied. My first reaction was to ignore them and pass by, but I could feel the helplessness of the student being bullied.…
