2 BACK AT WHYTELEAFE. ELIZABETH was excited. The long summer holidays were almost over, and it was time to think of going back to school. Her mother, Mrs. Allen, was busy getting all her things ready, and Elizabeth was helping her to pack the big trunk, "Oh, Mummy, it's fun to think I'll see all my friends again soon!" said Elizabeth. "It's lovely to be going back to Whyteleafe School once more. The winter term ought to be great fun," Her mother looked at Elizabeth and laughed. "Elizabeth," she said, "do you remember what a fuss you made about going away to school for the first time last term? Do you remember how you said you would be so naughty and disobedient that you would soon be sent back home again? I'm glad to see you so happy this termlooking forward to going back." "Oh, Mummy, I was stupid and silly," said Elizabeth, going red as she remembered herself a few months back. "Goodness, when I remember the things I said and did! Do you know, I wouldn't even share the cakes and things I took back? And I was so awfully rude and naughty in class-and I just wouldn't go to bed at the right time or do anything I was told I was quite, quite determined to be sent back home!" "And after all you weren't sent back, because you found you wanted to stay," said Mrs. Allen, with a smile. "Well, well-I hope you won't be the naughtiest girl in the school this term." "I don't expect I shall," said Elizabeth. "I shan't be the best either-because I do fly into tempers, you know, and I don't think before I speak. I'm sure to get into trouble of some sort! But never mind, I'll get out of it again, and I'll really do my best this term." "Good girl," said her mother, shutting down the lid of the trunk. "Now look, Elizabeththis is your tuck-box, I've put a tin of toffees in, a big chocolate cake, a tin of shortbread, and a large pot of black-currant jam.

    Ida B Character Analysis

    • 966 Words
    • 4 Pages

Fun loving, carefree Ida B had now decided to be angry and cold hearted. She didn’t enjoy being this way and often had to try very hard at it but she was determined. Ida B refused to make any friends and refused to like her teacher, even though she did like her very much. She spent her days avoiding anyone and everyone. She finds out later that the part of the apple orchard they sold had been demolished and a house was under construction. In her creatively and angry mind she makes several posters advertising horrible (untrue) things and happening in the area to hang up all over the land. One day she is sitting in a tree watching the family look around and she realizes that it is a girl in her class, Claire. Claire and her younger brother begin finding all of Ida B’s posters and think they are funny, which is something Ida B found the exact opposite of funny. They got closer and closer to the tree she was in and by this time Ida B was boiling mad. She hopped out of the tree an began screaming at them, so much she made Claire’s little brother cry. Ida was even shocked at her own…

I walked out of Miss Shnyzer’s office. It had been about an hour ago that Toby Kavner, my name, was called over the loudspeaker. I walked over to my mates, Max Lavell, Jimmy Cass and Dylan Dolan, who were tossing their apples over the wrought iron fence. They are too busy cracking jokes about some homework. I plump down beside Max and start crunching down on my ovalteenies.…

SOLDIER'S HOME by Ernest Hemingway Krebs went to the war from a Methodist college in Kansas. There is a picture which shows him among his fraternity brothers, all of them wearing exactly the same height and style collar. He enlisted in the Marines in 1917 and did not return to the United States until the second division returned from the Rhine in the summer of 1919. There is a picture which shows him on the Rhone with two German girls and another corporal. Krebs and the corporal look too big for their uniforms. The German girls are not beautiful. The Rhine does not show in the picture. By the time Krebs returned to his home town in Oklahoma the greeting of heroes was over. He came back much too late. The men from the town who had been drafted had all been welcomed elaborately on their return. There had been a great deal of hysteria. Now the reaction had set in. People seemed to think it was rather ridiculous for Krebs to be getting back so late, years after the war was over. At first Krebs, who had been at Belleau Wood, Soissons, the Champagne, St. Mihiel and in the Argonne did not want to talk about the war at all. Later he felt the need to talk but no one wanted to hear about it. His town had heard too many atrocity stories to be thrilled by actualities. Krebs found that to be listened to at all he had to lie and after he had done this twice he, too, had a reaction against the war and against talking about it. A distaste for everything that had happened to him in the war set in because of the lies he had told. All of the times that had been able to make him feel cool and clear inside himself when he thought of them; the times so long back when he had done the one thing, the only thing for a man to do, easily and naturally, when he might have done something else, now lost their cool, valuable quality and then were lost themselves. His lies were quite unimportant lies and consisted in attributing to himself things other men had seen, done or heard of, and stating…

It was a cold, bitter October morning. The day had started off like most other, five a.m coffee and a lifeless bowl of buttermilk oatmeal. It would be soon that I slug into my 2005 Honda Civic and drive off to my final dreaded destanation, Maddy Austin Jake Bricker Middle School. As I dragged out of my car I was greeted by several students in which I gave a polite wave and hurried into my classroom which was buried deep into the middle school’s basement , nearly spilling my cheap 25 cent coffee. Just from the outcomes of my morning I could tell this was going to be a long regretful day.…

The sun is shining, the wind is blowing, I put on a big huge smile on a my face as the teacher calls us to go outside for the end of the year school party. "I'm so excited!!" I whisper to my friend Aviva as the teacher calls tables. Another side of me is a nervous wreck, because I thought I wasn't going to make it to middle school, the main reason is that I'm terrible at every subject and I'm going to get an F on every test in the whole 6th grade, I think, as the teacher dismisses the table and I slowly walk toward the outside of the classroom."Boo!" Aviva exclaims. "Whoa! You scared me there, are you out of your mind?!" I joke. As we both head to the classrooms to get some snacks and treats, I turn and look at everyone, one last time before I never see them that way again. I smile as I step inside.…

It was almost spring. That warm weather a real pleasure after one of the coldest, but snowless winters in Pennsylvania. She couldn't see them, but could hear their squeals and her mother’s slow pronunciation of the words. Duucck, duuuuuck, duuuuuck, GOOSE! She sat on the toilet, closed her eyes, pissed on the stick, couldn't bring herself to look right away because she concentrated on the children outside. The irony they provided was distracting. Most of them were laughing, but someone was crying and she listened for her mother’s calming, chamomile voice as she tried to fix the sad one. And Lindsay didn’t even need to look then, she just knew. She knew what the test would inform her, her life and at times hopeful future falling into a pile at her feet, the remains sad segments of thick cement someone would sweep up and throw away. All she had hoped for now…

The bright sunshine beamed through the window in my room. I woke up, it is a normal school day again, I sighed and got out of my bed slowly. Mum was cooking in the kitchen while dad was sitting at the table, reading a thick book. It seemed that he was always waiting for me. A simple conversation always began with ‘how is school these days?’, ‘good’ I answered reluctantly. Then came a long silence, I did not know why there were no words between us, probably because I could not feel any freedom here at home.…
