THE GIRL CHILD------- A BOON NOT A CURSE.....

INDIA A LAND OF TRADITIONS, CONCEPTIONS, MISCONCEPTIONS AND A LOT MORE. HERE THERE IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION THAT A GIRL CHILD IS A LIABILITY TO THE FAMILY, AND HENCE EVERY YEAR WE SEE MANY GIRL CHILD DEATHS IN INDIA. IS THIS JUSTIFIED. IS IT TRUE THAT A GIRL CHILD IS A LIABILITY TO THE FAMILY? DO GOVERNMENT POLICIES AGAINST THIS ISSUE WORK OUT PROPERLY? IF NOT THEN WHY NOT? SO MANY QUESTIONS BUT WHEN I ASKED THEM I HEARD NO ANSWERS. IN THIS ADVANCED WORLD I THINK WE HAVE ANSWERS TO EVERYTHING, THEN WHY NOT TO THIS QUESTION. JUST BECAUSE IT HAS TO DO SOMETHING WITH THE GENDER OR IS IT THAT IT IS REALLY A MAN'S WORLD. DO WE REALLY REALIZE HOW INCORRECT WE ARE IN BREEDING THIS MISCONCEPTION IN OUR BRAINS? I DEFINITELY THINK THE ANSWER IS 'NO' WE NEVER REALIZE IT BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO. GOD, MADE US HUMANS. HE CREATED MAN AND WOMAN. THEN WHO ARE WE TO DECIDE WHO IS SUPERIOR. REMEMBER GUYS EVEN GOD WAS GIVEN BIRTH BY A WOMAN. BUT THEN WHY DO WE NOT TAKE THIS POINT INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN WE HAVE A GIRL CHILD IN OUR FAMILY. WHY DO WE DEPRIVE HER OF THINGS SHE NEEDS AND WANTS. THOUGH TODAY IN THE MODERN WORLD SUCH INCIDENTS HAVE BECOME LESSER IN NUMBER, BUT STILL THE THOUGHT PROCESS REMAINS THE SAME. ONE OF MY FRIENDS THE OTHER DAY COMMENTED ABOUT HIS DAUGHTERS FUTURE ' WHAT ABOUT HER SHE WILL GROW UP STUDY AS MUCH SHE WANTS AND THEN FINALLY SHE WILL GET MARRIED TO SOMEONE AND BECOME A HOME MAKER SHE IS NOT MY SON TO EARN FOR ME' WHY SUCH AN INDIFFERENCE.WHY SUCH A MALE ORIENTED STATEMENT. IS IT THAT ONLY GUYS CAN EARN AND NOT GIRLS......IS IT THAT ONLY GUYS CAN BE ENGINEERS, DOCTORS, OR MANAGERS. SO VERY WRONG. I WANT TO MAKE A SPECIAL MENTION ONE OF MY FRIENDS IS A PHYSIOTHERAPIST SHE IS FAR MORE INTELLIGENT THAN ME FAR MORE MATURE AND EVEN MORE SMARTER THAN AND I AM,AND I AM NOT ASHAMED TO ACCEPT THIS. WHENEVER I SEE SUCH A GIRL AROUND ME I FEEL PROUD BEING FRIENDS WITH SUCH A PERSON. WHY DO I MENTION HER WELL FOR THE SIMPLE REASON, TO POINT OUT THAT BEING A GUY I AM JUST NOT UP TO THE MARK OF A GIRL. BEING A GUY DOES NOT MAKE ME SUPERIOR TO ANYONE. SUPERIORITY COMES BY BRAINS INTELLIGENCE MATURITY AND SMARTNESS NOT BY GENDER. THERE ARE SO MANY COMPANIES TODAY WHO HAVE REALIZED THAT A GIRL CAN DO MULTI-TASKING IN A FAR BETTER FORM THAN A GUY. WELL , I HAVE WORKED IN A CALL CENTER AND I HAVE WITNESSED THE CAPACITY OF GIRLS IN COMPARISON TO US GUYS. AND I HAVE NO SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT THE MULTI-TASKING THING. IF SUCH IS THE SITUATION THEN WHY DO WE CONSIDER A GIRL CHILD TO BE A LIABILITY. IS IT BECAUSE WE HAVE TO GET HER MARRIED ? OR MAY BE WE HAVE TO PAY DOWRY ? OR IS IT BECAUSE THE WHOLE 'BLOODY INDIAN SAMAJ' SAYS SO , WE HAVE TO FOLLOW IT WITHOUT REASONING. WELL, WE NEED TO NOW QUESTION AND REASON SOME CONCEPTIONS OF OUR SO CALLED 'INDIAN SAMAJ' AND CHANGE THEM. WE NEED TO RETHINK THAT DO WE REALLY TREAT WOMEN AS GODDESSES. EVERYONE HAS HEARD ABOUT LATE.KALPANA CHAWLA. ABOUT DR.KIRAN BEDI, ABOUT SANIA MIRZA AND LET ME NOT FORGET ABOUT MRS.AISHWARIYA RAI BACHAN ........THESE ARE GREAT WOMAN PERSONALITIES HAD THEIR PARENTS THOUGHT THEY WERE A LIABILITY INDIA WOULD NEVER HAVE SUCH GREAT WOMAN ACHIEVERS. PEOPLE IT IS HIGH TIME WE EJECT OUT THE WRONG THOUGHT PROCESS OUT OF OUR MINDS AND RESPECT WOMAN HOOD AND MAN HOOD IN EQUAL TERMS. DEPRIVING A CHILD OF NEEDS AND RIGHTS IS A NON-BAILABLE CRIME UNDER THE INDIAN PENAL CODE. KILLING THE BABY ON BASIS OF GENDER IS ALSO A NON-BAILABLE CRIME UNDER INDIAN PENAL CODE. LOVING A CHILD WHATEVER GENDER IT MAY BE IS A GOOD DEED IN THE BOOKS OF KARMAS WHICH IS ABOVE ANY CODE ANY BOOK ON EARTH. A GIRL CHILD CAN BE A BOON TO THE FAMILY ONCE GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY. HERE I NEED TO MENTION THAT PARENTS SHOULD TAKE CARE OF BOTH GIRL AS WELL AS BOY CHILD IN EQUAL MANNERS. NO COMPARISONS NOTHING JUST GIVE THEM THEIR FREE WORLD AND SEE THE MIRACLES THEY WILL CREATE. LATELY, I REALIZED MY PARENTS LOVED MY SISTERS MORE THAN ME. I USE TO ALWAYS BRING UP THIS ISSUE WITH MY DAD AND MOM HURTING THEM AS THEY SAID THEY LOVED ME ALSO A LOT. THEY WERE RIGHT , I FAILED TO REALIZE THAT BEING A GUY I AM INSENSITIVE TOWARDS TEARS AND SUCH SENSITIVE FEELINGS BUT MY SISTERS BEING GIRLS ARE MORE SENSITIVE TOWARDS SUCH THINGS. AND I KNOW THAT THEY LOVE MY PARENTS MORE THAN ME IN A MORE SENSITIVE MANNER. I CAN FIGHT FOR MY PARENTS, I CAN EARN FOR THEM , I CAN SEND THEM ON A WORLD TOUR, MAKE THEM LAUGH, GIVE A LOT OF EASE AND COMFORT TO THEM IN THEIR OLD AGE , BUT TO LOVE THEM WITH SENSITIVITY I WILL HAVE TO BECOME THEIR DAUGHTER. MAY BE IN THE NEXT BIRTH ...................... A GIRL CHILD IS A BOON TO THE FAMILY, ESPECIALLY TO THE FATHERS WHO THINK ONLY THE SON IS RESPONSIBLE IN BRINGING HONOR TO THE FAMILY............ MY FRIEND WHO IS A PHYSIOTHERAPIST MAKES HER FAMILY FEEL PROUD OF HER AND ALSO HER FRIENDS PROUD OF HER...... SHE BRINGS GREAT HONOR TO HER FAMILY , AND ALSO TO ME........... IN THE GENERAL WORLD PEOPLE RESPECT SUCH WOMEN ............. HATTS OFF TO YOU WOMEN AND GIRL CHILDS .................... I WOULD ALWAYS PRAY TO GOD THAT I MAY GET A GIRL CHILD ............ LETS SEE LOL ................................... BUT READERS THINK ON MY THOUGHTS AND DEVELOP YOUR OWN THOUGHTS IN THIS DIRECTION ........... I AM A SMALL HUMAN BEING MAKING A SMALL EFFORT I WANT HELP FROM YOU ALL GUYS AND GIRLS TO HELP ME MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. I WANT YOU ALL TO SPREAD THIS WORD OUT THAT THE GIRL CHILD IS A BLESSING A BOON AND NOT A CURSE ............ LET THE WORLD KNOW THAT A GIRL CHILD CAN ALSO CREATE MIRACLES ENLIGHTEN PEOPLE TO HELP THE GIRL CHILD SURVIVE, GROW AND PROGRESS TO BECOME ANOTHER KALPANA CHAWLA OR SANIA MIRZA OR KIRAN BEDI AND SO ON ............ SIGNING OFF FOR NOW THE MIRACLE MAKER--------------- SALUTING WOMEN AND WOMAN HOOD I DEDICATE THIS POST TO THE FORTH COMING WOMEN'S DAY THIS MONTH ................. MAY GOD BLESS ALL THE GIRL CHILDREN IN INDIA AND GIVE THEM THE STRENGHT COURAGE AND THE OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE THEIR PARENTS , FRIENDS, THE WORLD AND ME PROUD

Six decades after the country's independence, and during the 21st century Female foeticide still continues in India. Women constitute half of the population in India, meaning half of the population has been deprived of its self-respect and subjugated into its grim existence. Infant mortality in India remains higher than that of males. The percentage of girls enrolled in schools is 49% compared to 73% of boys, and the percentage of employed women has dropped from 71% to 41%. Crimes against women have also increased. More than 4,000 cases of rape were reported per year, approximately fourteen rape crimes a day, which is equivalent to one or two rape crimes every hour. Females are usually looked down on by their parents, some might even kill their own daughter or continue to reproduce until one of them is male.…

No matter how much we deny it, the truth remains that the women of our society experience the same problems that the women in the Arab world do. One may argue and say that India is developing and moving forward and women are no longer treated as inferiors but is this really the case? Aren’t we forming our opinion based on how we, as individuals, are treated? Look at the millions of women in the villages. Those women face the cruelty of the male dominance till date. Female feticide, infanticide, premature marriages, honor killings, the practice of ‘sati’ are common sights in the villages of our country. One of the increasing atrocities against women is that of rape. Every single day tens of women in our country are raped and there is very little that the system is doing to protect the women against these crimes. It is nauseating to read about how brutally the women are treated for no fault of…

For societies, usually in backward regions, where patriarchy still prevails and ‘female foeticide’ plagues, parents are evidently ‘controlled’ by societal and cultural influences. They may appear to be unable to make wise decision with regard to the welfare or survival of their child, especially girls. Selective abortion for gender preference is illegal in India, but the low proportion of female births…

According to the author, there are two main reasons why sexual disparity is widespread. First of all, the marked cultural preference for sons are significant, although not in all traditional societies. In some 'old-fashioned' societies, where the girl is deemed to join her husband’s family on marriage and lost to her parents, parents prefer to have male children, to guarantee care in their older years. The sexual disparities also tend to rise with income and education. It seems to be the case, in parts of India, that richer, and well educated families, tend to have smaller families. However, they feel more pressured to bear a son to whom the family name and wealth can be carried on through. Secondly, the spread of fetal-imaging technology and significant drop of ultrasound scan cost encourage the use of sex selection abortions. Although this type of abortion is lawfully banned, it is almost impossible to prove that an abortion has been carried out for reasons of sex selection. Therefore, there is no effective regulations to stop this behaviour.…

Traditions and cultural beliefs in India are resulting in the slaughter of girls, often before they are even born. According to the official statistics, in the past 20 years ten million female foetuses have been aborted, with the boy to girl ratio now being at about 1000 to 900. Although determining a foetus’s sex is illegal, let alone abortion or even the killing of a young girl, several clinics across the country surreptitiously agree to reveal the sex of the foetus or terminate the pregnancy for a price. In the following few paragraphs I would like to find reasons for the prevalence of this horrific practice and investigate why a nation doesn’t want its daughters.…

Jamaica Kincaid relates the relationship between a mother and daughter in her poem, “Girl”. The poem is about how a mother prepares her daughter to become a woman. She gives her a litany of valuable lessons to shape her behavior and character according to what is acceptable to their culture. Kincaid cleverly dropped hints throughout her poem suggesting that the culture being referred to is the Afro-Carribean culture. The Afro-Carribean culture is a blend of music, dance and cuisine mostly conducted in traditional lifestyle; and all these elements are represented in the poem. One of the most lucid hints is the fact that the mother teaches her daughter how to catch a fish, which describes their primary industry: fishing. Essentially, the mother is teaching her daughter a livelihood practiced in their community. The entire poem is both advice and reprimand to prepare a girl become a woman defined by her ability to perform all the household chores, behavior, and values.…

“When God created man and women, he was thinking, ‘Who shall I give the power to, to give birth to the human being?’ And God chose women. And this is the big evidence that women are powerful”, Malala Yousafzai. In some eyes the women race can be strong, powerful, but in others, one may believe women are incompetent compared to men. That men are the superior gender. As women, it is important to remember what women fought so hard for, their rights. It is important to be treated equally, not as they are any less than a man. Although, in spite of the efforts the American culture and the Indian culture put in for women to be treated as there is no gender difference among men, problems are still occurring, although some might disagree with women…

    Infanticide

Despite the clear prohibitions against child-murder by all major religions, female infanticide has been for centuries a prominent and socially acceptable event, notably in one of the most populous countries in this world, India. Even today, the extent of the problem is measured in alarming proportions all around the globe: "at least 60 million females in Asia are missing and feared dead, victims of nothing more than their sex. Worldwide, research suggests, the number of missing females may top 100 million." The data is more astounding in India. According to the Census Report of 2001, for every 1000 males the number of females has decreased to 927 in 2001 from 945 in 1991 and continues to decrease. It is clear that the burdensome costs involved with the raising of a girl, eventually providing her an appropriate marriage dowry, was the single most important factor in allowing social acceptance of the murder at birth in India. Nonetheless, in addition to the dowry system, the reasons for this increasing trend have also been attributed to the patriarchal society, poverty and the availability of sex-selective abortion.…

    Sex Selective Abortions

Feminism and women’s rights have resulted in abortion rights throughout many countries, which are thought to benefit womanhood for a range of reasons. However, in developing countries such as India, abortion rights are reinforcing the patriarchy that has oppressed women for millions of decades, through the practise of sex selective abortions. Historically, son preference has existed throughout the entire country, and is still a growing phenomenon. This phenomenon, along with abortion rights, has resulted in an increasing number of women who choose to or are forced to commit female foeticide. Although variations in male to female ratios persist throughout different districts, the average ratio of 933 females to every 1000 males[1] in India indicates gross violation of women’s rights, while making it evident that female foeticide is a significant problem. The termination of a female based entirely on her gender is not only morally unacceptable, but also represents the gender bias and lack of equal rights and opportunities for women in India. These abortions represent and reinforce devaluation of girls and further entrench gender prejudices.[2] Many demographic and socioeconomic factors affect the frequency of sex selection. These abortions have numerous implications for the entire Indian society, especially for the women. Legal and feminist responses have not been adequate enough to significantly reduce this practise, thus, additional awareness is necessary.…

It is even more preposterous to have an inequality in education for this biological reason. Education for girls not only helps themselves and their families lift out of poverty, but also helps increase the country’s GDP. Educating the girls also reduces the likelihood of girls to be forced into sex, since education would delay her marriage and childbirth.…

According to the RIGHT TO EDUCATION ACT,every child of the age of 6-14 years shall have a right to free and compulsory education in a neighbourhood school till completion of elementary education. It is always said that girls are no way inferior to boys. But actually what do they get from the society?A whole range of discriminatory practices including female foeticide, female infanticide, early marriage and dowry, which have buried the future of girl child. It seems very difficult to empower the girl child. Our society is still suffering from many weaknesses.Instead of giving them education, they are being subjected to sufferings under likes of Purdah System.Education for the girls is more important as she not only builds the home, but all routine responsibilities are completed by her.Today's girl child will be the mother of tomorrow. In ancient times, girls' education played significant place in the society.Gargi Mitreyi played a very encouraging role in spreading girls' education to a great extent. That is why, empowering the girl child is the best way to empower the nation. So we conclude with this motto. Another significant factor is the view of parents. For example, In some families when a boy is born, relatives, friend and neighbors exclaim congratulations. A son means insurance. He will inherit his father's property and support the family. When a girl is born, the reaction is very different. Some women are upset when they find out their baby is a girl because, to them, a daughter is just another expense. Her place is in the home, not in the world of men. In some parts of India, it's traditional to greet a family with a newborn girl by saying, "The servant of your household has been…
