Gilgamesh And Odysseus Comparison
Jimmy Kyon
Comparison of Gilgamesh and Odysseus In the realm of epic poetry, heroes go off and accomplish great things, while dealing with deities and mortal beings alike. This is no different in Homer’s The Odyssey or The Epic of Gilgamesh. In The Odyssey, the tale is recounted of the great warrior Odysseus trying to return home to his wife after fighting a great war. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, it is told of how a demigod, Gilgamesh, faced retribution for poor leadership and manages to redeem himself. However, with all the similarities and conventions of epic poetry, there are also many differences, such as character traits and the nature of obstacles faced by the heroes as well. Even though Odysseus and Gilgamesh possess great importance to the realities in which they exist, Gilgamesh’s impact on his reality is much more negative than Odysseus’s.
One of the most important similarities that Odysseus and Gilgamesh have is that they both serve as connections between the Gods and the mortals. Gilgamesh is born of a god and is the ruler of the people of Uruk. Odysseus invoked the wrath of the Gods because of his cruel treatment of the Cyclops, Poseidon‘s son. No matter what the specific circumstance, Odysseus’s and Gilgamesh’s epic statuses make them critical singularities, representative of the Gods to the people, and representative of humans to the Gods. This gives them a divine impact on the realms in which they exist, making them very influential people
Aside from this major similarity between Odysseus and Gilgamesh, the two also have much more in common. They both are great warriors, and the results of them defeating certain people greatly affect their worlds. Odysseus’s killing of the Cyclops, for example was able to make a god such as Poseidon take action, and Gilgamesh killing the bull of heaven sent to kill him by the Gods for mistakes he made in the past.
Despite their many similarities, Odysseus and Gilgamesh have many differences as well.

One way Odysseus and telemachus can be compared is their courage. Both Telemachus and Odysseus are very courageous. They have to be courageous to be the heroes that they are. However, Odysseus is the main character of the poem and only earned that status by proving himself through many harrowing encounters. Homer lets the reader know that Odysseus is greater, and specifically more courageous, than Telemachus when they both react differently to the problem of the…

The stories of heroes have been at the axis of nearly all cultures throughout history. Each different type of religion or culture has their own heroes or legends, each one of them having their differences to go along with the beliefs at hand. On the other hand, each and every hero also has their similarities, which therefore makes them the hero. The setting, events, and characters in each and every story may change, but the characteristics of the hero remain basically the same. Each person is usually made into a hero in a somewhat similar fashion. For example, many heroes begin as imperfect characters, and then begin some sort of quest which leads to them becoming a leader of what they are doing, and then the character goes through a personal transformation into a legendary hero of their people. Therefore, both Odysseus of the Greeks and Moses of the Jewish can both be considered as heroes to their people. In both cases, the person does not decide to be a hero, but they are instead chosen by a greater force, such as a god, to become the one. Both Moses and Odysseus perform three similar tasks. These are for the person to fulfill a destiny handed down to them by a greater power, undertake a journey where great sacrifices are made on his part to overcome difficult obstacles, and finally complete their legacy through the sharing of their stories for the greater good of the people that believe in the hero. Both Moses and Odysseus can be compared in that neither were perfect heroes, they both experienced some sort of quest, and they both experienced personal limitations along with a transformation.…

Odysseus and Percy are similar because they both are stuck with the Lotus Eaters and must help their friends escape by forcing them. Odysseus must force his men off the island, “Those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return; they longed to stay forever.” Odysseus forces his men on to the boat and away from the island “ I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches.” He has to force his friends off while they are fighting to stay on. Odysseus is a hero since instead of leaving his men he took them against their will as they screamed and fought. Similarly, Percy has to force his friends away from the Lotus. Percy has to force his friends away, “I looked at Annabeth, and together we took Grover by the arms and dragged him away. His flying shoes sprang to life and started tugging his legs in the other direction as he shouted, “No! I just got a new level! No!” He is like Odysseus since he had to force Grover away from there after he finds out it’s a trap. Percy is a hero because, like Odysseus, he didn’t leave his friend behind. Both of them have many similarities like being heroes, however they also have many differences from each other.…

Odysseus has been shown to be an epic character through the conflict he faces. One example of this is Polyphemus, or the Cyclops he encounters in a cave. The Cyclops was not allowing his men and himself to leave, and Polyphemus was eating them. He later stabbed the Cyclops’s eye and escaped. Another example of conflict would be Poseidon. Since Polyphemus is Poseidon’s son, he isn’t happy with Odysseus for stabbing out his son’s eye, so he creates terrible storms for Odysseus to encounter. One last conflict, mentioned in Book XXII, is when Odysseus kills the suitors who have been causing him problems. They wanted to marry Odysseus’s wife, and have created injustice.…

The main characters in both epic poems were very similar. King Oedipus and Odysseus were both wise and clever and handled their destinies with great honor, bravery and courage. Odysseus as a Tragic Hero

    • 2458 Words

To accurately show just how disparate Odysseus is from the other heroes of Greek mythology, the common characteristics of the Greek hero must first be discussed in order to show that Odysseus is part of this extraordinary group. Heroes such as Heracles, Achilles, and even Odysseus all shared various attributes which, with the exception of Odysseus himself, seemed to lead to each hero's tragic fall from grace. Each of the aforementioned mythical men was extraordinary in some way or another; Heracles, of course, was half-god and possessed incredible strength; Achilles was dipped by his mother Thetis in the waters of Styx and was made nigh-invincible, and Odysseus was incredibly intelligent and clever. In addition to each hero's extraordinary attribute, each one's story was full of interactions with the gods, either as adversaries, friends, mentors, or even family. Mortals whose lives have such ‘spiritual intensity' in fact assume an almost ‘divine status', as Morford and Lenardon say (Lenardon…

When comparing the epics, it becomes apparent that Homer had to have been influenced by The Epic of Gilgamesh before creating The Odyssey because of similarities with the heroes and plot summaries. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the hero Gilgamesh is quoted as "two-thirds of him was divine, one-third of him was human (1.50)." Gilgamesh was the strongest and most handsome man in the world, goddesses threw themselves at him, and he could best any man or obstacle thrown his way. Odysseus is like Gilgamesh in that he is said to be an "Ithacan hero (2.269)", "Godlike Odysseus (2.282)," and a great warrior who had goddesses wanting him for themselves, but unlike Gilgamesh, Odysseus was clever and a "dear friend (4.177)." The Odyssey states that "No man could match Odysseus for cunning... master of all strategies (3.132)." However, Odysseus has a wife and son and the goddess Athena watching over him, while Gilgamesh had only his mother watching over him.…
