Gian Lorenzo Bernini “Ecstasy of Saint Teresa”

I chose Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Bernini because it is an impressive multi-media installation that helps me understand the intense experience of Saint Theresa’s visions. Four black marble columns frame the scene of Saint Theresa floating as if on a cloud as a playful angel is about to plunge an arrow repeatedly into her. Her face portrays a feeling of intense pain and pleasure as she accepts the glory and light of her lord. Heavenly light is shining down on them. Through the use of natural light shining down from an unseen mystical source. Brass reflective rods are lined up in a row opening up towards the couple further signifying the beauty and grace of the light. From both sides of the main characters a viewer then notices a seated audience relief carved out of marble. The audience seems to be captivated by the untraditional portrayal of god like visions. The marble is so beautifully carved to render flesh and the texture of clothing. Ecstasy of Saint Teresa is equally frightening and stunning; reflecting the religion it represents. This piece is a perfect example of Baroque sculpture. A common characteristic of Baroque art is including the audience into the work. Ecstasy of Saint Teresa does this by way of the theater windows. The reliefs of witnesses within these windows gives the sense that all of this is happening on a stage, and the audience is thus placed in orchestral seats in front of the stage. This includes the viewers into the work and justifies the drama portrayed theatrically in front of us.

The scene portrayed here is an intense one. Seeing the look on Saint Teresa’s face shows fear, pain, and pleasure. This is juxtaposed with the look of calm playfulness on the angels face as he threatens her with the arrow. Natural light bathes both the figures in a holy light that implies a sense of realism to the existence of God. The emotional impression the piece implies is very characteristic

He is perhaps challenging the viewer to see more that physical beauty but rather an internal need to be desired regardless of our outer shell or weathered state. He used detail and traditional symbolism of beauty in the clothing, headdress, the red rose, the seductive corset, and the lifted chin and soft eyes. Perhaps the timeless review and contemplation of intent was in fact Massys true intent of this piece, as it has withstood the test of time as a historically famous work of art. The initial dislike for the woman drew me in. The complexity of the painting made be find aesthetic beauty, and the content itself keeps me perplexing on the possibilities of intent. It is truly a respectable and intriguing display of art and…

The Sacrifice of Jephthah’s Daughter 1650 by Pietro Vecchia is a rather unusual painting. The premise is that he must sacrifice his own daughter because of a deal with God. In the painting she has her arms across her chest covering her naked self and is bent over almost in a ball. This cowering is a stark difference to, Giovanni Baglione’s St Sebastian healed by an Angel 1603. Sebastian is in repose with his hands behind his back revealing his body. He has already been shot by an arrow where as the daughter is awaiting her father to stab her with the spear in his hand. Both characters are half naked with a cloth covering their lower bodies. Jephthah’s daughter is more ashamed of her nakedness while Sebastian seems to accept it. In biblical times the fattest goat was to be sacrificed to gain God’s favor. The heavy set nature of Jephthah’s daughter appears to be an allusion to that sacrificial procedure. St Sebastian is fit and is being healed by a female angel. The daughter is fat about to be hurt by her father Jephthah. There is a major difference between the healing angel and the overly religious father. The angel’s presence makes the viewer calm and feels like St Sebastian is going to pull through. The presence of the father is one of fear and is rather disconcerting. Even though he is embracing his child the idea that she is about to be killed by him makes him an ominous figure. These pictures seem to scream the difference between a loving God and a vengeful God.…

During our tour at the Legion of Honor, we observed art starting from the early and High Renaissance. Next, we went to the Dutch Baroque period, British art, and ended at the impressionists. A most notable work of art from the tour was “The Annunciation” by Master of the Retable of the Reyes Católicos. This oil on wood panel painting was created in the late 1500s, during the High Renaissance period of the art historical cannon. It portrays the biblical event found in the Gospel of Luke in which the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is pregnant with Jesus, the son of God. “The Annunciation” is a religious painting and is an example of the many great works of art from the High Renaissance.…

One of the first things that I notice when I sit in front of Dante and Virgin in Hell is how the two figures engaged in ferocious battle in the foreground capture nearly every ounce of the viewer’s attention instantly. The two fighting figures have been accented with an intense light that seems to shine exclusively on their bodies. They clearly proclaim dominance within the painting and begin a clear line of movement. The attacker’s knee is slammed into the victim’s back, bending him over backwards and pulling his entire torso down. No matter which figure you first examine, your attention is immediately drawn up through the curvature of the man whose spine is being twisted back at an excruciating angle and out of his head. The line then travels on to the left where you see two figures that are standing in the background, hidden by a curtain of darkness. The use of atmospheric perspective is overly emphasized here as well to once again, push the battling men in the foreground even farther ahead. Dante’s eyes leads us to the right side of the painting where a winged demon is flying overhead and watching with glee on as the two fighters claw at each other mercilessly. His wings carry the visual line to the right even more and even farther back in the scene where a mountain of living and writhing…

Tone is utilized to highlight the folds in the garments of the figures and the use of lighting on the seams creates movement. The fluid movement and chaotic mass of the apostles in the foreground contrasts with the clear linear spacing around the Virgin. The placement and size of the Virgin also illustrates her importance in classical antiquity. The separation between the natural and the spiritual world is also clearly defined through the use of a light blue to a dark blue gradient in the sky. This disconnect is then unified through the triangular layout of the apostles and angels, which allows for visual stability within the composition. It leads the viewer’s eye back to the main focal point, the Virgin Mary. Despite the casket’s positioning on the bottom left of the frame, this asymmetrical layout is still balanced and unified due to the triangular structure, converging lines of light, and space surrounding the Virgin and…

    Madonna and Child by

    • 610 Words

The subject of the work I observed was a Madonna enthroned painting, a pictorial representations of Mary, the mother of Jesus, with her child. The event depicted shows baby Jesus sitting on his mother's lap. As for symbolism and representation, “The significantly larger size of the Madonna and child group indicates that they are more important. Her traditionally red gown signifies the passion of Christ and her blue mantle that she is queen of Heaven. Her ornate throne, which repeats aspects of Gothic architecture, signifies that she is not only the queen of Heaven but represents the Catholic Church itself. The golden star that falls on her shoulder derives from her title "Star of the Sea" (Latin Stella Maris), which is the meaning of the Jewish form of her name, Miriam (Minneapolis Institute of Arts)”. The work is representational, somewhat non realistic because of fine visible brush strokes. The work is large and the size did affect the impression this work made on me. I like big art works because it's just that much better to look at, being able to observe many details of the artist. The work stands at a height of 5 feet tall and almost 2 feet in width. The painting does look a bit flat and doesn't really have any space. By this I'm referring to character's face, hands and feet. Proportions of the face were off which caused it to look flat. The reason I said this painting is somewhat unrealistic was because of the black brush strokes. Despite it being flat, Buonaccorso did a good job of shading. The gown of Mary and baby Jesus' clothing shows a bit of volume. From my observation, the colors I see on this painting are yellowish-gold, dark-blue, reddish pink and black. As for it's overall composition, I didn't really like it because it's so small in terms of width. So everything was squeezed into such a small space. Unlike other Madonna paintings, this one doesn't have any angels or other characters besides Mary and Jesus. In my opinion, the artist combined the…

The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (alternatively Saint Teresa in Ecstasy or Transverberation of Saint Teresa; in Italian L'Estasi di Santa Teresa or Santa Teresa in estasi) is the central sculptural group in white marble set in an elevated aedicule in the Cornaro Chapel, Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome. It was designed and completed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the leading sculptor of his day, who also designed the setting of the Chapel in marble, stucco and paint. It is generally considered to be one of the sculptural masterpieces of the High Roman Baroque. It pictures Teresa of Ávila.…
