In the movie Gia’s sexual identity is not identified by her. She never comes out directly and states I’m a lesbian or bisexual. Even though she never had sex with a man, she never said that she wasn’t attractive to men. Gia was very open minded and was always willing to explore her sexuality. Throughout the movie growing up she was finding herself while meeting a woman by the name of Linda who at the time they met was involved with a man. Gia really loved Linda but in the beginning Linda would always push her away which fueled her drug addiction. Linda was bisexual and in the beginning had issues with it because Gia was the first woman she ever been with but Linda also fell in love with her in time. Gia was feminine but at times could be very aggressive and had some boyish qualities about her to me that stood out. Treatment is care provided to improve a situation, especially medical procedures or applications that are intended to relieve illness or injury. In the Hmong society, people go to a txiv neeb, a shaman, who is believed to be a “person with a healing spirit” (Fadiman, 1997, p. 21) to cure their illnesses. A txiv neeb knows that to cure an illness you must treat the soul, in addition to the body. This is important to the Hmong because in their society the soul has a great deal of importance. In Anne Fadiman`s The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, the Lees, a family of Hmong refugees from Laos, are placed in a difficult situation when their three…

Maria is and always be a sexual object as much as she is portrayed in a character of her movies. Maria’s sexual role is not much different than Ruth, the character of “Green Girl” by Kate Zambreno. Zambreno compares Maria and Ruth as two persons in one essence. They both are viewed as sexual commodity, while Ruth works as a shopgirl who sells “Desire” perfume and Maria, an actress who is sexually characterized in her movies. They are the sexualized women in their life, at work and in person. (Gay, Garish, Glorious Spectacles…

    New Woman: Book Synopsis

    • 747 Words
    • 3 Pages

The “New Woman” is “appealing in her appearance” (Moeller 35), independent, and changes all assumptions about femininity. She is one who “go[es] to the cinema in the evenings… buy[s] Elegant World and the film magazines,” (Wehrling 721-723) she can be seen as promiscuous and sexually liberated. Mia Pinneberg models all these adjectives. She wears her “brown suit and smart hat” (Fallada 278) voiding any feminine assumptions, she formerly worked as a hostess at a night club, and even upon aging, continues her quest for social superiority through her constant evening parties and booze. Mia is the independent “New Woman” that bounces around from lover to lover with only her self-interest in mind. She is currently using Jachmann, her “current lover” (Fallada 107) for solely her own pleasures, and openly admits that she “sleep[s] with him” (Fallada 107). All of these aesthetic qualities and aspirations demonstrate how society saw the “New Woman.” However, underneath the mass stereotype for modernized bourgeois women, the pressures and expectations create an alienation from themselves, others and society itself as displayed through Mia.…

Sexual Content: Ambiguous at best. Gabriel openly courts Anne Howard with her father's permission. When Anne's father frets about the attention the handsome young Gabriel is showing his daughter, her mother makes a remark about how he was worse in his youth, implying that they'd had premarital sex. To the movie's credit, Anne and Gabriel are married in an explicitly Christian ceremony. The widower Benjamin relies on his sister-in-law, Charlotte, to hide his family, but it is implied that they have sex, as she is seen later in the movie carrying a…

This brilliantly written script has many innuendos of these scholarly ladies acting a bit like men in order to make the point that women can and should have equal rights. The plot thickens when Ben Weissman (Patrick Dempsey) tries to seduce the beautiful Alice Paul. Weissman shows Paul how to feel sexy, and that it’s okay to feel like a woman. Von Garnier has incredible insight on how to make a woman feel beautiful when she flashes pictures of Paul taking a bath, shots of her lips, and her smiling.…

Not much is known about Isabella’s early life, but at the age of 14 she joined the acting group Gelosi, an important touring theatre company patronized by the aristocracy of northern Italy. Isabella began playing the role of the prima donna innamorata (enamored woman) and she completely revolutionized the character. The original character was dull and slow-witted, but Isabella liked to improvise so that the prima donna was much savvier. She was known for being daring and memorable, sometimes even taking off or tearing at her clothing onstage. Isabella was also known for being very flexible, a valuable skill for all commedia characters, regardless of sex. The character Isabella, probably the most famous of the Lovers from commedia, was named after Isabella Andreini due to her many contributions to the development of the part.…

In Josef von Sternberg’s film Blue Angel, female sexuality is defined through the character Lola Lola. The lead female character is captured using select subject-camera distances that seem to make her appear powerful and in control. The medium shots of Professor Rath and the full shots of Lola Lola during the first “falling in love again” performance are used to compare the emotional male character to the empowered female character, and therefore illustrate the evolving sexual identity of women.…

Nevertheless how she selectively tries to get that specific aesthetic in both the casting process and portraying the ideal woman to draw in males attention intrigues me a lot as her intention was always to impose anxiety into the male heterosexual. However it is possible that she may be exploiting the women without fully understanding her…
