Probably the most prevailing point of the book was Southern culture, specifically Savannahian culture. The book is an in-depth look at an isolated city during the 1980’s. Local Mary Harty notes, “We’re a little enclave on the coast—off by ourselves, surrounded by nothing but marshes and piney woods. We’re not easy to get to at all, as you may have noticed. If you fly here, you usually have to change planes at least once. And trains are not much better.” With such isolation comes a unique culture. For example, many houses in “America’s Most Haunted City” are painted “haint blue,” a color believed to protect the inhabitants from evil spirits. Because Savannahians refused to allow outside influences and…

In the summer of 1854, London was coming out as one of the most modern cities in the world. With nearly 2.4 million people living in the area at the time, the city’s infrastructure itself was having a hard time providing for the basic needs of its residents. The biggest problem existing within the city at that time was its waste removal system, or for better terms, its lack of one. Human waste was piling up everywhere, from people houses to the rivers and drinking water. This situation was the perfect breeding conditions for a number of diseases, and towards the end of that summer, one of the most deadly of them all took over. It took the work of both a physician and a local minister in order to discover the mysterious cause of the extremely deadly Cholera outbreak, but by then hundreds of people had already lost their lives.…

In most haunted house stories now, the tormented inhabitants of the house usually discover some secret just before the biggest, most powerful ghostly display at the climax of the narrative. These discoveries are a way to explain the horror of the house. The 1999 film adaptation, The Haunting, embraces this kind of plot structure. If I had, I would’ve known on page 50, when Dr. Montague says, “some houses are born bad… What it was like before then, whether its personality was molded by the people who lived here, or the things they did, or whether it was evil from the start, are all questions I cannot answer.”…

Do you know what the closet haunted places to you are? The closet haunted places are in Weyauwega, Marsh Road. There are actually two haunted roads by the name of Marsh Road in Weyauwega (Haunted Places in Wisconsin 29). There is one where I live stretching from highway 54 to White Lake Road, which is the road I live on, and there is one near highway ten just off of Evanswood road which is a dead end (Haunted Places in Wisconsin 29). Both of these roads are unmarked, which means that they don’t have any street signs. The first Marsh Road I am going to talk about is the one off of Evanswood Road (Haunted Places in Wisconsin 29). Legend says that in the 1960s and 1970s there was a “Make-out Couch”, and on the night after prom there was a couple that was on the couch late that night and it is said that a man, in which they call the Goatman, killed them and left there remains still on the couch (Haunted Places in Wisconsin 29). Also another myth is that if you stop your car on the bridge of marsh road that your car will not start back up. Many people have said that they have seen the couple’s ghosts. Other paranormal activities include orbs found in pictures from studies that have been conducted on the road (Haunted Places in Wisconsin 29). Also many people say that if you drive down the road one way and come back road’s length is dramatically different (Haunted Places in Wisconsin 29). On the other side of Weyauwega is the different Marsh Road. Legends of this road include another prom story. On prom night a girl’s date stood her up and she was so upset that she hung herself that night and she was…
