Have you even wondered what the most important battle that lead up to the Civil War? Well, it was Gettysburg, P.A. Gettysburg Pennsylvania was a battle that was fought for three days. It was the largest battle in North America at the time 1863. There was 85,000 men in the Union's Army fighting under major General George Meade. There was approximately 75,000 men in the Confederacy’s Army fighting under General Robert Lee. This is the most important battle because of what lead up to Gettysburg, what the three day battle was, and because they were the turning point of the Civil War. Within weeks, four more Southern states seceded and joined the Confederacy. The formation of the CSA proved to be problematic for Robert E. Lee (1807-1870)." (Stock, 2) In the election for anti-slavery by Abraham Lincoln in 1809-1865, South Carolina and six other Southern states had come from the Union in January 1861 to form the Confederate States of America, aka CSA. When Lincoln refused to take out the army who attacked them, the American Civil War began. In a few short weeks more Southern states joined with the Confederacy. By doing this Robert E. Lee had a great deal of problems to sort through. Robert E. Lee was a career military officer who had graduated top of his class at the United States Military Academy. He made himself known in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. He made it all the way to the rank of, temporary, colonel in the United States Army. Lee was promoted to full-time colonel in the U.S. Army March 1861. He had bluntly yelled that he wouldn't fight against the Union when he turned into a colonel. In 1861 He has resigned from being a colonel and the following year he became a commander of the Northern Virginia
