Gertrude's Relationship Analysis
Hamlet's questioning of Gertrude's sexual relationship with Hamlet's uncle could suggest a possible obsession that Hamlet has for Gertrude. Hamlet's belief that Claudius killed King Hamlet makes Hamlet think that Claudius is turning his mother, and Denmark, into a foul state. This can be seen as Hamlet says QUOTE. In this quote, Hamlet uses garden imagery (In which he also uses in Act 1 Scene 2 as well) to describe the disdain that Hamlet has for Claudius. Hamlet is also seen having guilt for Gertrude as he asks her to repent her wrongdoings and move on. It is here that it can be seen that Hamlet shows compassion for his mother, even though he previously expresses his anger for Gertrude's swift decision to marry so quickly after King Hamlet's

    Olivier presents Hamlet’s relationship with Gertrude as more physical in order to indicate Hamlet’s confusion, while Branagh presents the relationship between Hamlet and his mother as less physical to reinforce his feelings of frustration. During the scene where Claudius and Gertrude are encouraging Hamlet to stay in Denmark, Gertrude freely touches Hamlet and kisses him on the mouth to console her grieving son (Olivier, 1948). During this scene, Hamlet is sitting at the edge of the table wearing all black and is turned away from everyone. He is upset that his mother has remarried such a short time after his father’s death. His tone of voice suggests that he is full of grief, devastated about the death of his father, and feeling betrayed by his mother.     What distinguishes Hamlet from other revenge tragedy plays is the amount of action expected, especially from Hamlet himself as he continuously hesitates due to him trying to be absolute certain of his actions.     However, Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, betrays his father by remarrying with Claudius. The Ghost calls Gertrude his “most seeming – virtuous queen” which implies that she only seems to be virtuous, but is not.(1.5.53) To be virtuous means to be honest and moral, Hamlet believes that his mother is no longer either because she remarried to another man right after the death of his father.
