DISCIPLESHIFT: JOURNAL

14- I like the analogy he makes about the baseball pitcher. You can get a shot of cortisone to reduce swelling, but it will not deal with the deeper issue at heart. In the church, we must understand that change will never be fast, but it will be worth it.

20- “About one in four people living together outside marriage call themselves evangelicals” What?!?

24- “The solution to our ineffectiveness as churches is to train people to be spiritually mature, fully devoted followers of Christ, and the in turn to have those disciples make more disciples”

30- “A strict emphasis on fellowship alone creates a church that struggles with an inward focus instead of reaching others, because the group values real relationships that require so much.”

57- “Time in a church building does not have any bearing on a person’s true state of maturity.”

60- The five stages of discipleship were mind blowing. No one had ever explained this to me, but it makes so much sense! I finally understand what to do with people who are spiritual infants and children! Simply disciple them! This is an awesome explanation and it is very well done. I read this illustration every night during my daily Bible study.

61- “What do you expect from a dead person? The answer of course is, not very much.” This is exactly how spiritually dead people act and it makes so much sense!!

67- (A spiritual child) “will learn what it means to have a servant’s heart, rather than one that is self-centered.”

When one views the life of the Apostle Paul in the New Testament it is evident that he had a heart to disciple others. The evidence at hand identified Paul as more than an individual who had doctrinal knowledge, for he was the quintessential model for living out the standards of Christian behavior. In his letter to the Church of Philippi Paul encourage them to “Whatever…

The modern-day church needs to go back to the blueprint put forth before us. Smither labors to show the biblical origins of proper mentorship and our need for its imitation. The author further supports this when he points out that, “While Jesus presented a model for the Twelve, Paul called the Corinthian believers to be “imitators” (mimētēs) of him, emulating his “ways which are in Christ.” Therefore, we would do well to imitate, follow, and live out the ways of Christ in our mentorship.…

Also, i agreed with the author regarding some classifications he made. The church can be a hostile place to nonbelievers and therefore it can draw people away from God, what i think is the most influential part is the community that shows their faith though actions. Throughout my life i witnessed hypocrisy and judgment within the congregation of the church which is discouraging but in the community i am able to meet people that convince me of God presence through their actions, through my journey with family and friends my faith nourished as i fully understood the concepts of love and Gods’ blessings for…

A church whose pastor and others in leadership have failed to put in place a proactive plan for discipleship for Believers is usually a “growing” church — growing stagnant, growing cold, growing spiritually immature Christians, and eventually, many growing closed. Patte said, “There is much at stake in accepting or rejecting the challenge of discipleship…” When a pastor or a church makes a conscious decision to make discipleship of Believers a primary focus in their church, they need a plan. The pastor can make his own plan, or find one that will fit the personality of the church. Putman, after some time, has come up with five stages and four spheres of discipleship.…

In John Wesley’s fourth sermon on the Sermon of the Mount, he makes the point that Christianity is a social religion. Christianity is not practiced in a vacuum. As Christians, he says, we gather as a community, holding one another accountable to the faith and being with one another as we grow in relationship with God. Beyond that, as a social religion, Christianity calls us to have an impact on our communities, to care about others, and to be involved in making social changes for the betterment of the world. The church should foster these Christian communities, providing space in which Christians and those exploring Christianity can live their faith with one another. Wesley’s two-part understanding of the social nature of Christianity and the church leads us to the stated mission of the United Methodist Church – “to make and mature disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” This mission matters because our world needs transformation, and our call as the church is to work in concert with God to bring about the Kingdom of God – on earth, and within and through our lives.…

Discipleship is extremely important to me because I want to be someone who embraces and assists in spreading God’s teaching to others, to help empower people to know, deeply and wholeheartedly, their God given gifts; to help them know that God has created them in His image that He has a plan for their life. I will combine with Liberty’s mission and my personal faith and beliefs to contribute a well thought out plan to enable each student to reach their goal in serving Christ and worshipping.…

This passage serves as a warning to those both within in and without the church. For those within the church it reminds us that many may resemble Christians on the outside, but are not internally. It also helps us refocus on the true point of Christianity. To become a Christian one does not behave well or achieve a position of status in the world. You must turn from your sin and desperately cry out to God for salvation. Those who are not Christians must become like children and depend completely on God. Cast all your hope in…
